Torrington Farmers, Umberleigh Preview

Point-to-Point enthusiasts will head to Umberleigh in North Devon for this weekends grande finale where the Torrington Farmers host Saturdays meeting June 15 being the last in the seasons series, and with showers forecast earlier in the week organisers will be hoping for near perfect conditions and a great party atmosphere.

The main six race card heads the action at 2pm, followed by two pony races after which the area champions are crowned.

First up is the Devonshire Motors of Barnstaple Confined where trainer Kayley Jones has two entries, she is currently lying fourth in the trainer championship, Richard Barber has already secured the top spot. Checkerboard could get her closer and has wins at Wadebridge and Trebudannon, Deb’s Dasher is another possibility from the same yard having beaten Checkerboard once this season.

In the Captain Forster Memorial Restricted Milburn could reproduce his form for trainer Gail Haywood when winning the Open Maiden at Upcott Cross on good to firm a short head in front of the favourite Go On Henry which was a slightly controversial result on the day. Mr Bachster ran well under Leanda Tickle when winning by a head at Bratton Down last weekend and another to consider with strong claims is the Marc Barber-trained Numbercruncher who held on to win at Trecoed under Jack Barber a head in front of Danny Mags on good to soft.

Davisons sponsor the Mens Open in which Nobby Kivambo for trainer Jason Warner has some solid form with wins at Barbury and Andoversford under Mark Wall and only just failed to win at Cold Harbour in May when a short head behind Maletton. The Ollie Greenall-trained Threapwood is on a seasons hat-trick and was not disgraced at Bratton Down when six lengths fourth behind Bellsinni Ron for jockey Sam Allwood. Vertigo Dore is another to consider after his men’s open win on good to firm at Bratton Down earlier this month under 16 year old Kieren Buckley.

The Ladies Open is sponsored by E.J.Snell & Son Ltd in which Nipper John could repeat his win last weekend and turn out for Brodie Hampson to improve her place in the Lady Novice jockey’s title. Knight Blaze for the David Brace team is a Ladies Open winner at Trecoed in May when trouncing the field by 25 lengths under Charlotte Prichard, and Watch The Birdie has quickly progressed to win an Intermediate at Trecoed for trainer Stephen Bevan when beating Respectueux by 12 lengths.

Barum Stud sponsor the Intermediate in which Railway Vic would secure the Ladies Novice title for Bryony Frost the combination having strong claims being on a hat-trick already this season, the Matthew Barber trained and ridden Gallaflynn could take this having made all to win at Howick and Lower Machen. Bathwick Scanno and My Runaway both won last weekend and would be fit.

The final race of the season is the Smallridge sponsored Open Maiden and could be really competitive with 22 entered, a tentative vote goes to the Ollie Greenall-trained Journey Man who has shown ability on good to firm and Just Seven for trainer Roy Smith who has been in the frame on all three of his last outings under jockey Vicki Wade.

Pony racing follows at 5.20pm and these have been sponsored by Hatchmoor Veterinary Practice.

The course is located at Chapelton Barton, Umberleigh on A377, 5m South East of Barnstaple – EX37 9EB.

On course catering, bar, bookies and a host of trade stands. Entrance £20 per car load £10 car and driver.
