Gail Haywood & GGH RACING

Gail Haywood, who trains on the edge of Dartmoor is looking forward to the new point to point season and is the first of our trainer profiles on the new Devon and Cornwall point to point website.

Gail, was lucky to have a fairytale start to her training career with her first two runners, SIR GRENVILLE and PHILOMENA winning first time out. Other winners followed such as ALL IN THE STARS, THE VENETIAN, TULLOW BOY, HERE’S JOHNNY, BENETWOOD and most recently Milburn.

The yard is on the edge of the moor with a fantastic array of hill work, schooling facilities and a grass gallop to which Gail hopes to soon add an all weather gallop. Her ethos is to treat every horse as an individual, pay attention to detail while offering value for money for her clients.

She has a small number of horses to run point to pointing with a number going on to run ‘under rules’ or hunter chasing.

She said: “I am not from a racing family but horse racing has been a passion since being a toddler. I was really into flat racing but at 10 st and 5ft 9” I had to refocus! Friends and family offered me encouragement along the lines of ‘stop dreaming, get an education and a real job’ or ‘she’ll grow out of it when she gets a boyfriend’ but I drove my parents to distraction, got riding lessons and then a pony and joined pony club where I happily competed in Tetrathlon and other events.”

A chance meeting at 14 with Neil Kernick and his father Syd led to Gail being taken under the wing of the legendary horseman at their yard near Kingsteignton. She continued to ride out for them during school and university holidays until Neil relinquished his licence in 1994, but he continued to support Gail during her point to point career, driving her to the races and coaching her. Over the next 13 years Gail worked in various roles as groom/work rider, racing secretary for a variety of professional trainers and in 2007 took the advice of PD Keane and set up GGH racing.

We are very much looking forward to running the following, as well as some others, this coming season:

BENETWOOD

BENETWOOD

BENETWOOD

12 YR OLD GELDINGBY BENEFICIAL EX DONEGAL THYNE BY GOOD THYNE

OWNER – MRS SUZIE HAYWOOD

SPONSORED BY – THE PASSAGE HOUSE HOTEL & INN

A winner of 10 races, Benetwood didn’t run last season, although he was in full training. He was found to be suffering from a hoof infection, which has taken an age to settle. When he finally came 100% right the season was nigh on over, so we decided to wait for this year. We are very much looking forward to running him again as he won twice, on the bounce, for us in the 2011-2012 season.

7 YR OLD GELDINGBY HERON ISLAND EX STRIKE AGAIN (PHARDANTE)

OWNER – MR ROMILLY STUART-JERVIS

SPONSORED BY – MANHOLE COVERS LTD

Richardofdoccombe finished a good 4th, against far more experienced horses, on his only outing in a Point to Point last season, on ground that was too quick for him and over a trip which is too short. We didn’t get chance to run him again as he contracted a cough and when his bloods came right the ground for him had gone.We are hoping he can win a Maiden Point to Point on softer ground and then hopefully he will progress to run under rules. He is a lovely natural and athletic jumper and will ultimately be aimed at Beginners Chases on Good to Soft or Soft ground.

5 YR OLD FILLYBY KAYF TARA EX RUBY STAR (GRAND PLAISIR)

OWNER  – MISS G G HAYWOOD

SPONSORED BY – MANHOLE COVERS LTD

An unraced, homebred, filly by leading Nation Hunt sire Kayf Tara from a winning family, Betty is a lovely big individual, who looks like she was made to jump a fence. My aim with her is to run her in Point to Pointing, with a long term view to running her over hurdles & fences in the future.

MILBURN

MILBURN

MILBURN

7 YR OLD GELDINGBY FIRST TRUMP EX BARONESS ROSE (ROSELIER)

OWNERS – MISS G G HAYWOOD & MR ROMILLY STUART-JERVIS

SPONSORED BY – MANHOLE COVERS LTD

WINNER OF TWO POINT TO POINT RACES IN 2013 (MAIDEN & RESTRICTED)

Milburn was purchased by myself as a 2 year old from a field in Bromsgrove and has been somewhat of a long-term project. An excellent jumper and a horse with scope and gears at home, Milburn ran very greenly in his first two Point to Points, failing to complete. However, on his third run the penny finally dropped and despite a step up in trip from 2m4f to 3 miles and a horse falling directly in front of him at the last fence he won his 12 runner Maiden Race in May 2013, showing a ready turn of foot to, somewhat controversially, just get up on the line. He then went on to win his Restricted Point to Point three weeks later at Umberleigh. He is still green, but a rapidly improving sort.

TULLOW BOY

9 YR OLD GELDINGBY DOUBLE TRIGGER EX POLLY’S PERK (EXECUTIVE PERK)

OWNER – MR ROMILLY STUART-JERVIS

SPONSORED BY – MANHOLE COVERS LTD

WINNER OF A MAIDEN POINT TO POINT – MAY 2010

WINNER OF A NOVICE CHASE AT FFOS LAS – DEC 2011

Tullow Boy came to us as a massive (17.1hh), terribly weak, big, backward 4 year old. We spent considerable time in building up his strength and educating him slowly, so as not to damage his ever-increasing frame. He proved himself to be very athletic for a horse of his size (now 17.3hh) and easily won a 2m 4f Point to Point when trained by us in May 2011. He went on to win his first race under rules by 7 lengths and looked to be a very promising individual. He then had a number of health issues and came back into work for the 2012-2013 season and the plan was to run him Hunter Chasing ourselves, but we couldn’t get his bloods 100% right. Therefore, we decided to wait until he came right, which he now has. He is now fit and strong and is currently in training. He is a giant of a horse, who is surprisingly athletic for his size, with a bright future over fences. We will be aiming him for Hunter Chases and are very excited about running him again has we think he is an improving sort.

More info about the horses an our plans for them and up to date news can be found at www.gghracing.com or by joining our facebook group – GGH Racing.

I look forward to seeing you all at the races in the forthcoming season.
