Pony Racing at Black Forest Lodge, 2 Feb

The Devon and Cornwall pony racing season gets off to a flying start at the Mid Devon point to point on Feb 2 with entries received from all over the south west and it will be a great chance to see some new ponies and new riders.

There are some top ponies entered in both races (138 and 148cm) but many have new jockeys. Tyler Heard partners a new pony having his first outing, The Jobs Not Straight, while Tamby Welch takes the ride on top pony Angelic, both owned by pony racing’s most enthusiastic supporter Richard Prince who also runs Wee Anthony. NH trainer Mark Gillard brings both sons down to Black Forest Lodge with Veno Star in the 138 race for Fergus while Hamish Clarke, from the Wessex Area, will be bidding for victory on Talponciau Perfect Print.

In the 148s William Cox keeps the saddle warm on Total Eclipse while Tamby Welch perfects his craft on the 138s, Total Eclipse previously having been partnered by Tamby’s elder sister Hannah who has now graduated to point to pointing. Theo Gillard rides Hawksfield Flyer and there are plenty of ponies here who have seen Charles Owen national series action so the racing will be enthralling, especially as they complete just over a circuit of the point to point course.
