The 148 finish was the highlight of the pony racing at Buckfastleigh at the South Pool point to point on Sunday. Three of the five runners were split by a head and a length on the line with Theo Gillard getting the judge’s verdict on Hawksfield Flyer. The pair are veterans of the Charles Owen series but this was a good win for the son of NH trainer Mark Gillard who is based in Dorset.
The Gillards horses are in form as they also enjoyed a front running NH winner at Taunton on Tuesday but, interestingly, the ponies are trained from the field.
Hawksfield Flyer maintained a lead from the start pursued by eventual second Springs (Thomasina Eyston), who so very nearly got up to win. It was another great performance from the pair and Tarka (Barnaby Treneer) was held in third, after losing 10 lengths at the start.
Abi Lewis had a good ride on Derwent Dream Dancer who made progress all the way, as did Michael Treneer on Plym Steps. He will be happily waving off Barnaby back to school soon so he can take over the reins on Tarka!
In the 138s there was a first win for newcomer five year old The Jobs Not Straight, ridden by Tyler Heard who was pushed all the way by Tamby Welch on Angelic. Fergus Gillard was third on Veno Star who was closing the pair down all the way to the line. Good ponies in behind were Talponciau Perfect Print (Hamish Clarke) who won the race last year, and My Golden Dream ( James Armstrong).
