Preview: Eggesford Point-To-Point, Upcott Cross, Sunday April 13

Point-to-Point racing takes place at Upcott Cross this Sunday April 13th, where the Eggesford Hunt host their meeting. Pony racing heads up the action at 12 noon, and the main seven race card starting at 1pm. More than 120 entries have been received.

The feature race of the day, is the Simpkin Edwards sponsored Mixed Open four mile Devon National. Entries in this include Bellsinni Ron from the Richard Barber team, he is on a hat-trick of wins this season, including Charleton Hawthorne, Ston Eston and last weekend at Little Windsor, where he made all under jockey Will Biddick  Lucette Annie trained by Simon Partridge, is a previous course winner here. She loves the soft and goes well for jockey Darren Edwards, having won at Chipley Park in January and followed up with a third at Buckfastleigh. Double Dizzy is an interesting entry, the 13 year-old gelding has won over £100,00 in prize money under Rules, and should have fun now back in Pointing.

Nigel Cant Planning sponsor the opening Members race, in which Googoobarabajagal would be a popular win here for jockey Michael Heard on his grandparents course. Clew Bay Cove won here last season for trainer Ed Walker, finishing ahead of South Western and could reproduce that form to win here.

The Exeter Racecourse sponsored Intermediate looks a very competitive race, with The Mythologist for the Henderson team having scored two from two starts this season. Pure Oxygen is another classy entry from the Richard Barber team, having impressive wins at Buckfastleigh and Cotley under champion jockey Will Biddick. Annie Aces from the Gordon Chambers team, is another to consider, having impressed at Kilworthy coming home a short head in front of Lord Samson. Celia Plunkett’s Squirrel Esquire took the Restricted at Bradfield-On-The-Green in a notably quick time and should not be left out of the equation.

In the Confined race, which is sponsored by Chris Hodgson Engineering, Hameldown Tor for trainer Ed Walker, missed out on a run last weekend after Cherrybrook was cancelled. He should be well fit, and his recent three length second to Ravethebrave at Badbury Rings could see him atone here. Notus De La Tour is an interesting entry, having previously finished second in a Grade 1 Novice Chase, he is now in training with Sam Holdsworth.

Raffa after his win at Kilworthy and Third Chance who was a close second at Cotley, could battle out the TT Building Limited sponsored Restricted race. Mister Trebus is another to consider after his win at Buckfastleigh last month. Druim Rua, for trainer David Rogers destroyed the field at Great Trethew, making all to win unchallenged under Darren Edwards, and looks one to follow.

The Will Biddick-trained and ridden The Doom Bar is entered in the Open Maiden for four, five, six and seven year old’s, the combination were running well at Cottenham before falling four out. Miss Gotaway finished second at Buckfastleigh under Jamie Thomas and could win here for the Kayley Woollacott team. This race is sponsored by Dawn West Devon.

David Phillips Bookmaker sponsors the Open Maiden for horses aged eight years and over, in which Kilcolman Wizard for the Heard family would be a popular win to close the day’s event. Wood Park and Deniere Dance (If connections do not choose to enter in the earlier Members race) also look close to a win soon.
