Another bumper weekend of Point-to-Point horse racing is in store this weekend in the Devon & Cornwall Area, where the Modbury Harriers host their meeting at Flete Park on Saturday 2nd May. The Stevenstone then stage their meeting on Bank Holiday Monday May 4th, at High Bickington.
Pony racing will head up the action at Flete Park, with two pony races commencing at 1pm, followed by the main six race card which starts at 2pm. Picnics will be brimming again, and this course offers fabulous hill park viewing, with the racetrack below, enclosing on course facilities such as bar, bookies, hot refreshments and a host of trade stands.
The opening Daniels Plant Hire-sponsored Maiden race has attracted 21 entries, in which Follow The Paint is a suggestion after his neck second at this meeting two weeks ago. Bollin Spark is another to note having been only a length down in third.
Nudge The Nugget could go well in the Stanley Carpets-sponsored Restricted race, having won his maiden race here for the Lewis team under daughter jockey Heidi Lewis. Doyen Dynamo also catches the eye, after his maiden win at Kilworthy and second in a restricted race at Kingston St Mary. Johnny No Cash is another that could run well for trainer Nikki Frost, having finished second here under Hannah Welch at the Dartmoor meeting.
The Ladies open race has been sponsored by the Pinsent family, and could be a good battle between two of the local ladies. With Bryony Frost having ridden Bellflower Boy well to finish second in the Open race at the Dartmoor meeting here. Hannah Welch will be looking to challenge after putting up a good performance with Ladyvie, having finished second in the confined race that day.
Whatastormnorm could go off favourite in the 2m 4f Open Maiden race, having impressed on both of his outings so far this season for trainer Robert Chanin. Milan Of Crystal ran a creditable third here for the Frost family and looks to have plenty more to offer.
Trainer Ed Walker holds three of the eight entries for the Totnes & Bridgetown Mens Open race, Hameldown Tor was on a hat-trick of wins, including a win here at the latest Dartmoor meeting, jockey Robbie Henderson was then unlucky to be unseated last weekend at the Axe Vale meeting. Level Spirit also won his race at the Dartmoor meeting and could well be back for more. Before The War also has strong claims with two previous wins at this course. Right Enough will need to improve on his previous run, but is a known course specialist.
The Meadowside & St Francis-sponsored Confined race closes the days events. This race could be one for local owner/trainer/jockey Jennifer Davenport on Mic’s Delight. They are yet to compete at this track, but have been in the frame on all six of their starts so far this season, including a win at Bishops Court. One of their main challengers could be Level Spirit, if connections chose this in preference to the previous Open race for him.
The course is located at Ermington, nr Ivybridge. Postcode PL21 9NX. Entrance is £10 car & driver, £20 per car and passengers.
Met Office 5 day forecast: Ugborough Beacon (2.1 miles)
