Great Trethew near Menheniot is where the East Cornwall Hunt will be hosting their Point to Point meeting on Easter Saturday 26th March, the first of two meetings to be held in the area over the bank holiday weekend. The course now has eight races on offer due to the cancellation of the February meeting, and has attracted nearly 100 entries.
Pony racing heads up the action at 12.30 pm with two races sponsored by Toad Hall Cottages. The main race card kicks off at 1.30pm with the Kings Head-sponsored 2 mile four furlong Open Maiden race for four, five and six year olds, with those showing good recent form are the Charlottte Hawker-trained Parlour Maid after her neck second at Cothelstone earlier this month. Fishy Story from the Staurt Sampson team is another to consider having run well recently at the Buckfastleigh meeting. The Jonathan Blake-sponsored Open Maiden for seven year olds and over’s follows in which She’s Dapper is a suggestion of the 19 entries, having made the most of her mares weight allowance and following up on her place at the recent Buckfastleigh meeting.
The Porche-sponsored Mixed Open looks to be the feature race of the day attracting quality horses such as Blazing Whale a winner of ten Points so far including latest at Bishops Court, Ghizao a veteran ex National Hunt winner of over £100,00 in prize money and recent winner of a Men’s Open at Barbury, Jepeck looking for a hat-trick of wins and Master Baker already a four time winner this season including last weekend at Kilworthy. They all hold entries for the Easter Monday Meeting at Trebudannon and it will be interesting to see who goes where.
The PPORA members race for novice riders has attracted entry Premier Portrait who is unbeaten over the finishing line this season and put up another impressive performance when winning at Buckfastleigh. Doctor Henry for Modbury owner/trainer/ jockey Bronwyn Buttery will be looking to reverse the placings when they were five lengths behind Premier Portrait at the opening meeting, and could pull out a surprise here, having taken the Mixed Open at Buckfastleigh two weeks ago..
Follow The Paint a winner of two races this season at the Wadebridge track under talented lady jockey Jo Buck for the Lydia Svenson team , and Doyen Dynamo from the Ed Walker team being a recent Didmarton winner, are two suggestions in the Exeter Racecourse-sponsored Intermediate race.
The Jack Barber-trained Athreeothree could be one of the favourites in the Blackburn Metals-sponsored Restricted race having won his maiden at Charlton Horethorne having been runner up four times in Maiden company, along with another progressive outside raider Creative Inerta who ran second at Black Forest Lodge in February , leaving the Robert Chanin-trained Whatastormnorm to try and win the spoils for the area and looks sure to be in the mix.
The two extra races on the day are the Members races, in which the first which is sponsored by the Cornish Times, could go the way of last weekends Kilworthy winner The Conjurer for the Grey team, they are likely to battle out the finish with Absolutely Bygones from the Jackie du Plessis yard who are well in form having saddled a winner at Exeter this week and must be feared. Group Travel sponsor the final Members race of the day in which the Gordon Edwards-trained Shannon Star would look the likely favourite after her second at the recent Buckfastleigh meeting under current area leading male jockey Darren Edwards.
