Upcott Cross near Halwill junction is the venue for next Wednesday evening’s re-arranged Point-to-Point fixture on 18th May, with the first race scheduled for 5pm. Over 130 entries have been received for the seven race card.
The feature race of the day looks to be the Eggesford Champion Mixed Open race sponsored by Simpkins Edwards, with an increase of prize money to £850 this race has attracted 19 quality entries, five of which are rated over 100. Steeltown is on a roll of four straight wins and also holds an entry at Bratton Down, although it may be ground dependent on where he will run. Blazing Whale may need to defy top weight, Shy John ran half a length second at Larkhill and looks to act on any, Black Forest Lodge winner The Wealerdealer is another for which the going could suit and Indiana Bay ran well at Cheltenham in third and ran a respectable second to Queens Bay at Trebudannon.
The Nigel Cant Planning-sponsored Members race opens the event in which Follow The Paint for the Heard family would be a popular winner at the family owned track, Fishy Story ran well when winning at Vauterhill and could put up another good performance here for the Stuart Sampson team.
The Ashgrove Kitchens-sponsored Intermediate race looks a competitive affair with those catching the eye being Flete and Holinicote winner Kapoupakap, dual Flete winner Sucker Punch and the Karyn Heard trained Back In June after his wins at Trebudannon and Vauterhill.
David Pipe sponsors the Open Maiden for 4,5 and 6 year olds with recent runner up’s Bleu Et Or, It Was All A Dream and What A Saga being suggestions for the short list.
In the TT Buildings Restricted race the Jack Barber/Will Biddick formidable combination have the option of running Flete runner up Athreeothree, Cothelstone second Brandevin and Ston Eston second Well Travelled. Flying the flag for the area could be the Jo Sleep-trained Mongress Boy after his two and a half lengths second at Vauterhill.
Dave Phillips-sponsors the open maiden race for seven year olds and over which has attracted 31 entries and may well be divided on the day, suggestions for the short list of those showing recent form are Druid Spitfire, Fountains Cider, Kisha Lad, Meldon Express, Mr Lano, Rainbow Stripes and Tetralogy.
Finally closing the event is the Chris Hodgson Engineering-sponsored Confined race in which Delphi Mountain for trainer and jockey Emma Watson could follow up on their win at Ston Easton and were then unlucky to miss a marker at the Trebudannon meeting. The Emma Oliver-trained Gershwinner and Sucker Punch from the Ed Walker team could turn up for another dual after the two were locked in battle at Flete Park.
