Point-to-Point horse racing action returns to the Devon & Cornwall Area after the Christmas and New Year break, when the North Cornwall host their meeting at the Royal Cornwall Show Ground, Wadebridge this coming Sunday 8th January.

This is a meeting not to miss with eight races on offer and an early start time of 11.30am. Over eighty entries have been received. The Kivells-sponsored men’s open looks to be the feature race having attracted nine strong entries and is a qualifier for the Timico Mixed Open finals to be held at Cheltenham in May. Prolific winning horse Premier Portrait won here at the December meeting for the Guy Levington team, with son Gus snatching the race in the final 75 yards. Blazing Whale is another with a good chance, with six of his twelve wins won in Open company and finished last season with a second in a Hunter Chase at Fontwell for the Ed Walker team. Full Trottle, who won the mixed-open at Black Forest Lodge in November under jockey Johnny Bailey, is sure to put up another bold show if turning up here for trainer Laura Thomas.

The Skinners-sponsored Ladies race could be equally as thrilling with four time course winner Sobre Tresor entered for trainer Clloe Newman, along with prolific winning gelding Start Royal, out of Alan Hill’s yard, who has an impressive 22 wins to date and would look to be the bookies favorite with the booking of Gina Andrews to ride.

Trainer Dean Summersby clocked up a double here at the December meeting and has Chosen Lucky entered in the Moores of St Wenn-sponsored Members race, connections will be looking for a repeat of that form shown here when winning his maiden race by six lengths under jockey Darren Edwards. Looking to take him on could be entry Way Before Dawn, having taken third place here at the December meeting in the Intermediate race that day for the Sarah Tickle ridden by daughter Leanda.

Blazing Whale also holds an entry in the Hops Oils-sponsored Novice Riders race, but may have to face another out of the top trainer Alan Hills yard who has Supreme Danehill entered. Supreme Danehill has a good track record at this course and young jockey Izzie Marshall will be looking to add to her win here when she won the Novice Riders race at the December meeting, two and a half lengths ahead of Rusty Nail that day.

Those that catch the eye in the Restricted race are Urban Storm having ran a good second at the Black Forest Lodge meeting on soft going, and High Priority for the Keith Cumings yard, after his second under jockey Josh Newman at the December meeting here. This race has been sponsored by three Cornish farriers Ryan Chapman, Andrew Prout and Andrew Daniels.

The Open Maiden race has already been divided with eleven entered in each division. Consideration in the first division could be given to Come On Joey, to follow up on his third here in December for trainer Roy Smith. In the second division Petite Rock looked to stay on well when six lengths second here previously under jockey Josh Newman.Entry Sudski could be worth following in the betting ring, having hinted at ability when placed in Points in Ireland. The maiden races have been kindly sponsored by Stephen Scown Solicitors and The Old Inn, St Breward.

Finally up is the Cornish Mutual-sponsored Confined race which could see last meetings previous course winner here and promising young mare Follow The Paint try and fend off challengers, which could include trainer Dean Summersby’s five time Point winner Robin de Souza who could clock up his treble at this track, and outside raider from the Richard Mitford-Slade team Applesolutely, also a course winner and like Follow The Paint could make the most of a mares weight allowance.

The facilities on offer for the public are track side viewing, a huge covered barn containing hot refreshments, bar bookies a large TV screen, together with many trade stands.

Entrance to the course is £10 per head to a maximum of £30 per car. Children under 16 free. Dogs on leads welcome.

Course is located at The Royal Cornwall Showground Wadebridge. (off A39 West of Wadebridge) PL27 7JE
