Point-to-Point race horse enthusiasts will be heading back to the Royal Cornwall Showground next weekend when it is the turn of the Western to host their meeting this coming Sunday 5th February. Six races are on offer with a start time of 12 noon which include a Men’s and Ladies open race, both of which are qualifiers for the Timico-sponsored Mixed Open final race to be held at Cheltenham in May.
Previous Hennessy Gold Cup winner Carruthers is entered in the Savills-sponsored Ladies race. Trained by Sara Bradstock, this popular horse ran second at the recent Black Forest Lodge meeting and is sure to be a welcome runner here, and could be one of the bookies favorites. Along with the ex Paul Nicholls-trained There’s No Panic, now in training with Miichael Biddick, has a good chance now switching to Pointing having won three Chase and three Hurdle races under rules.
The Peter & Anita George-sponsored Men’s Open race has attracted quality entries such as the highly rated previous winner of four Points and a Chepstow Hunter Chase Desertmore View. The Emma Oliver-trained Double Bank is a previous course winner here and has a total of nine Point wins and three Hunter Chases to his credit, along with recent course winner Sobre Tresor and Premier Portrait among the eleven possibilities.
Trainer Dean Summersby scored a double here at the last meeting, and has strong claims of repeating that success with Robin De Souza who holds an entry in the Green Waste Company-sponsored Confined race if he can reverse the placings with Before The War who managed to take the race by three quarters of a length under jockey Josh Newman for the Ed Walker team that day. Another previous winner here Air Glider also trained by Dean Summersby, holds an entry in the Hutchinsons-sponsored Restricted race could produce another winner for current leading jockey Darren Edwards to ride. The Summersby yard could well make it a treble of wins with their entry Rockinrolldixie to take the Exeter Racecourse-sponsored Intermediate race, but with The Dapper Fox and Back In June looking their closest challengers to tackle the tough uphill finish.
Fouroclock Fox looks an interesting entry in the Stimson & Tieken-sponsored Open Maiden race, a full brother to Point-to-Point winner The Dapper Fox for trainer/jockey Jack Veysey, could well improve on his third here early in January. Another to note in the Open Maiden race is Dewi’s Mate, having run close on his three outings to date most recently when second at Barbury for trainer Julie Mansell.

Good tarmac links to parking.
