Point-to-Point enthusiasts are in for a real treat this weekend with the Cornwall Hunt Club hosting their meeting at The Royal Cornwall Showground, Wadebridge having attracted 114 entries for the now seven race card. An earlier start time of 11.30am has been implemented to ensure racing finishes in daylight.
With the Men’s and Ladies Open races being qualifiers for the Timico Mixed Open Final to be held at Cheltenham in May, they have attracted good quality entries from around the country. Moores of St Wenn Ltd sponsor the Men’s Open which has two entries from Welsh trainer David Brace, Doctor Braveheart a previous course winner here and runner up at Cheltenham in The Connolly’s Intermediate Final, and recent Barbury Castle winner William Money. David Brace has often made the trip down from Wales and is a familiar sight in the winners enclosure. The Alan Hill team holds an entry with Supreme Danehill, another to have won at this track and a horse which Victoria Pendleton rode as her schoolmaster. Premier Portrait, For ‘N’ Against, and Robin De Souza are others which stand out among the twenty entries.
Supreme Danehill also holds an entry in the R & J Trevarthen-sponsored Ladies Open race and connections may take that option for jockey Izzie Marshall to ride who won this race on him last season. Other entries include the Chloe Newman trained Sobre Tresor, a specialist at this track having clocked up six wins over the years and looks to go well fresh.
Of the 24 entered in the Nare Hotel-sponsored Conditions race for Veteran and Novice riders, Chosen Lucky from the Dean Summersby team will start the likely favourite. A dual course winner here, Chosen Lucky won seven of his eight starts last season and will attract a good following. The David Brace team has three entered which include dual course winner Pink Eyed Pedro, William Money and Doctor Braveheart.
Another who will attract a good following is recent Bishops Court winner, The Kings Writ, from the Kayley Woollacott team who holds an entry in the Foot Anstey-sponsored Restricted race. With the Woollacott team already clocking up winners fast this season. Minella Mojo ran well in second at Bishops Court under jockey Tom Chanin and could come on for the run. Chester Copperpot is another to note after being well fancied at Larkhill last weekend, but unshipped his rider Katy Lyons at the fifth fence.
Robin de Boss is an entry which stands out in the MRMU Ltd-sponsored Intermediate race, having run well recently finishing a close third at Barbury for the Jo Hepburn team, but will need to defy top weight. Applesolutely from the Richard Mitford Slade team has the benefit of a mares weight allowance and is a previous course winner here and could be the one to catch.
The Open Maiden race has been divided. In the first division which is sponsored by Ray Davies Foods, Danseur du Large looked promising when six lengths second at the Bishops Court meeting, under champion jockey Will Biddick for the Ed Walker team. With Goldbury and Noble Promise suggestions in the second division.
The track at Wadebridge offers super viewing, allowing race-goers close to the action whilst experiencing some thrilling finishes. A huge covered barn containing hot refreshments, bar, bookies and a host of trade stands for Christmas shopping is on offer, giving a great festive feel to the day.
Entrance to the course is £10 per person with children under sixteen free. Ample parking accessed via concrete roadways. The Royal Cornwall Showground is located off the A39 west of Wadebridge.
