Point-to-Point heads back to Cornwall this coming weekend when the East Cornwall Foxhounds meeting takes place at Great Trethew, Menheniot on Sunday 25th February. Pony racing precedes the main event with the first pony race off at 11am and the six main race-card commencing at 12 noon. 99 entries have been received.
JRL Group sponsor the first race which is an interesting Flat race for four, five and six- year-olds run over about 2 miles. This race is a qualifier for the Goffs Spring Sale Bumper race and has attracted 22 entries. These include some notable outside raiders such as Schiap Hill and Showmetheway, both recent runner up’s in a divided Flat race at Barbury with similar times. Along with many local debutants which include Broadwood Robin for team Summersby and the Jackie du Plessis-trained Theatre Mix.
The first Open Maiden race over fences is sponsored by Dawe, Hawken & Dodd and Pryds and is also a Goffs Point-to-Point Bumper qualifying race for four, five and six-year-olds. We could see the Sam Holdsworth-trained Missyladie score here having gone close at Wadebridge when half a length behind winner Raloo Rocket. Missyladie will have the benefit of a weight allowance and is due to carry only 10 stone. You’re A Lady could go well fresh if travelling down for the Camilla Scott team and she will get a 7lb allowance which could be useful if in the mix.
In the Kings Head-sponsored Maiden race for seven-year-olds and upwards, Kayf Farmer stands out for trainer Charlotte Hawker after his six length second at Chipley Park under jockey Vicky Wade. Kayf Farmer had left Ballybruff another six lengths behind that day and the latter went on to win at Buckfastleigh last weekend, and on that form should be well fancied. Erica’s Lad for local trainer Jackie du Plessis could improve for his third at last weekends Buckfastleigh meeting if still fresh and recovered from that race well.
Porche sponsor the Mixed Open race in which Robin de Souza would look to be the red hot favourite. Having scored twice already this season at two of the Wadebridge meetings, Robin de Souza won a Men’s Open at Black Forest Lodge last year and is sure to put on another bold show for trainer Dean Summersby and jockey Darren Edwards. Kernel Victor finished only one-and-a half lengths behind Robin de Souza at Wadebridge for the Ed Walker team, who will be looking to improve on that form. Also Whenharrymetsally for trainer Keith Cumings and jockey Matt Hampton, won well at Chipley Park and has won twice at this track in previous years, with her mares weight allowance, she could fly up the final hill and be a likely challenger.
Another of team Summersby’s recruits, Chosen Lucky, is entered in the Group Travel Conditions race for Novice riders and will need to defy top weight, but has the booking of young jockey Bryan Carver who rode a winner at Buckfastleigh last weekend and could be on a roll. They could come up against William Money and Connor Brace, fresh from their Chaddlesley Corbett win two weeks ago, and should also go close here if making the trip down from Wales.
Finally up is the Jefferys-sponsored Restricted race in which Belharbour Two for trainer Heidi Lewis is one catching the eye after their second at the December Wadebridge meeting in a Restricted race, having set a strong pace that day until slowing two out, under jockey Lee Drowne. Raloo Rocket was impressive when winning their Maiden race at Wadebridge when coming home half-a-length ahead of Missyladie that day and looks to be an exciting addition to the Summersby yard.
