PPA ‘Jumping & Schooling’ day 22nd Feb
The PPA had a great day recently at the Northern Racing College (NRC) at Doncaster, for our first ever ‘jumping & schooling’ session for point-to-point riders. The day was led by BHA Jockey Coaches Tim Reed and Brian Harding, and was attended by six riders who wanted to brush up their skills. It wasn’t just about jumping either, but position in the saddle, use of the whip and much, much more. Riders had to bring their own mount, and it was lovely to see the rapport between horse and rider.

The day started with a session on the racehorse simulators, which is a real test for even the fittest of riders. I think it’s fair to say that most of the riders are happier on top of a real horse, but they were given plenty of feedback from Tim and Brian, including a great tip about balance inspired by Ruby Walsh.

Next up was the indoor school, where the riders jumped small obstacles and poles, which gave the coaches further insight, before the group moved out onto the schooling grounds.

First up was a line of three hurdles, before they moved on to jumping fences, and there were some fantastic exhibitions of jumping, from both horse and rider.

After each stage extensive video analysis was used, which was extremely useful for all – both coach and rider – to reflect and try to work on the small details going forward. At conclusion all riders were unanimous in their appreciation of the day, and the PPA in conjunction with the PPORA and NRC, will look to plan another as soon as possible.

Some of the group were due to be racing the following weekend at various point-to-points, so as they departed the PPA wished them luck for the future. After a superb and invaluable days coaching though, hopefully they won’t need to rely on good luck quite so much. A famous quote came to mind,

“The harder I work, the luckier I get”.

Major Incident Awareness Course
Tuesday 15th May 2018, Lingfield Park Racecourse

You may be aware that, in conjunction with the BHA and RCA, the RCA Medical Adviser has developed a Major Incident Awareness Course, which was delivered via a series of training days during 2017. Due to demand an additional event has been organised, to be held at Lingfield Park Racecourse on Tuesday 15th of May 2018, and it could be a useful session to attend for point-to-point officials and organisers.

The event is designed to appeal to racecourse medical teams, and other members of racecourse staff. It is recommended that Clerks of the Course and all senior officials attend, as feedback from previous events particularly highlighted the benefits of the involvement of senior racecourse decision makers.
