“As full of spirit as the month of May, and as gorgeous as the sun in midsummer”…..
Plenty of warm sunshine on offer at Vauterhill for the large Bank Holiday crowd who found their way up the narrow, twisty lanes for the Stevenstone meeting.
Culmstock trainer Stuart Sampson and jockey Bryan Carver teamed up to produce a double on this hot Bank Holiday afternoon.
The eight-year-old Midnight Legend mare Fishy Story, owned by Martyn Tucker, initiated their double after a good battle with Whenharrymetsally in the Mixed Open. The progressive mare had won her last race at Woodford by 40 lengths, and will probably be looking to add to her successes at the two forthcoming Upcott Cross fixtures.
Six-year-old Bob Along Mahler gave Bryan Carver his eighth winner of the season to complete a good day for the stable in the Open Maiden.
South Molton based rider David Prichard took his seasonal tally to eight as Tamarstone just got the better of Druid Spitfire to win the Restricted. Prichard had recovered from a nasty incident at Holnicote on the previous day and explained, “My horse was spooked going to the start yesterday and I was thrown on to my back. I had three x-rays at Musgrove Park hospital, Taunton, last night and I am okay, apart from feeling a bit sore.”
Prichard certainly showed no ill effects and went close in the Intermediate, having to settle for second spot as High Priority chased home front running Hinxworth (Darren Andrews). This useful looking Milan gelding is owned by Rebecca McMullan and Melissa Clarke, and is stabled with Ben Clarke at Woolminstone, Somerset. ”He must have good ground or quicker. He has a high cruising speed and could run next in a hunter chase at Fontwell”, remarked the trainer.
Darren Edwards followed up his Flete Park treble on Saturday (May 5) to partner his 16th winner of the season when Rumour Has It stayed on dourly to beat Georges Legacy in the Mares Maiden. “A galloper and a lovely mare,” was how the leading area rider described his winner, owned by Jo Sleep and trained by Victoria Sleep.
Its All Or Nothing was a short priced favourite to take the Confined, but Jo Supple’s mount was stalked by Wolftrap throughout the final circuit. Lee Drowne pounced on Wolftrap at the second last before scoring by four lengths on this former hurdles winner, now in the care of Karyn Heard.
Cinevator won the Hunt race for the third year in succession for his 21-year-old rider Ella Pickard, who also trains the gelding at Umberleigh for her grandfather Michael Tucker. “He had to work hard but jumped nicely”, reported the young rider/trainer, who also rides out for the Jeremy Scott yard.
