“For now the winter is past, the rain is over and gone”

Song of Solomon 2 v10-13

Not quite over and gone though. After the recent dry spell a dose of heavy rain during the week to augment the work involved in artificial watering was most welcome. The outcome was good to soft going which attracted plenty of “away” horses, and the Barber stable from Henley, near Crewkerne, went home with three winners.

A healthy total of 63 runners contested the six races before a large Bank Holiday crowd enjoying the warm sunshine at Upcott Cross. I am getting confused now with these Bank Holidays. I think this one is really Whit Monday, but who knows nowadays?

Golden Hoof followed up his recent Trebudannon win in good style to take the Mixed Open, quickening clear of Minella Fifty after the second last under Josh Newman. “He jumped perfectly and gave me a great ride,” said the rider, who was partnering his 13th winner of the season and had only just acquainted himself with the 10-year-old by sitting on him at the Barber yard on the previous day.

Will Biddick took the mount on the Barber representative Serralunga in the Open Maiden, and needed all his strength as his novicey five-year-old repelled the strong finishing 25-1 outsider Buckboru, ridden by 16-year-old Bruce Young, by a head, with Deise Gold breathing down their necks in third.

The stable treble was completed when four-year-old Eggardon Hill, ridden by Lorcan Williams, drew away impressively on the run in to score by 12 lengths from the promising Gypsy Charm in the two and a half miles Maiden. Jack Barber, representing his trainer wife Jade, “at home looking after our new baby Flora”, explained that Eggardon Hill is, “A big baby who has grown up a lot since his debut run. He has a good pedigree and we bought him at Goff’s Land Rover sales last June. He was going so well that Lorcan had a job to pull him up today.”

High Hatton travelled from South Wales to win the Novice Rider’s contest. After making most of the running, he had just been headed but was left clear when Robin De Souza crashed through the wing of the second last. The winner’s jockey, 16-year-old schoolboy Jack Tudor, was enjoying his third pointing success, including his first race ride on this same horse just two weeks ago. “I had 15 pony race winners and currently I am taking my GCSEs at Cowbridge School,” said the young rider who showed much promise.

Robin De Souza’s trainer Dean Summersby had better luck in the Conditions race as Honest Deed just held Heaney by a head to win for the fifth time this season. The game nine-year-old drew high praise from his trainer who said, “He is probably the best we’ve had.”

Darren Edwards had ridden his 19th winner of the season on Honest Deed, but had to settle for the runner up spot in the following Restricted race as Clondaw Bunny could not match the finishing pace of Jabbea. Nick Lawton was content to bide his time on the winner, who quickened away on the flat to score readily. “He likes this course with its long straights. He just enjoys passing horses and keeps galloping,” said his Calverleigh based owner/trainer Mary Sanderson, who had purchased him as an unbroken three-year-old to replace her prolific winner Jabiru.
