The penultimate Point-to-Point of the season takes place at the stunning location of Bratton Down, Bratton Fleming this coming Sunday 10th June where the Tiverton Staghounds host their meeting. There are six races on offer with a start time of 2pm. 77 entries have been received.
There is still much at stake with both area and national championships to be decided as the season draws to a close, many outside raiders have entered here and could well turn up to battle out the finishes.
Fire Defence Services sponsor the Mens Open race in which Spencer Moon stands out for Welsh trainer Kieran Price, a winner of five Points this season latest when destroying the field by 15 lengths unchallenged under jockey Bryon Moorcroft. They will have to defy top weight, as will Carlisle Hunter Chase winner Jimmy The Jet Plane who also holds an entry in the Ladies Open for trainer Francesca Nimmo. Fighting the corner for the area could be Top Chief for the Stuart Sampson team. Top Chief won the Novice riders race here under talented young jockey Bryan Carver, who is leading the area Novice gentleman’s riders title.
Top Chief also holds and entry in the opening Winston Pincombe Landrover-sponsored hunt Members race. This could be an easier option with only four entries, however prolific winning mare Whenharrymetsally is entered for trainer Keith Cumings. The mare has won 13 of her starts to date including two this season at Buckfastleigh and Chipley Park. Under jockey Matt Hampton.
Man Of Many Words looks the likely favourite in the Witheridge Garage-sponsored Open Maiden race which follows, having run second at Cothelstone for the Camilla Scott team. Sapphire Noire, for trainer Katherine Hawke is another suggestion after their second at Trebudannon, and although pulled up at Upcott Cross on 28th May, could bounce back here.
Desert Roe and High Priority are suggestions in the Exmoor Hay & Straw-sponsored Intermediate race. Desert Roe for trainer Jonathan Tudor has finished runner-up twice at Pyle and Trecoed this season, High Priority for the Keith Cumings team may run at Upcott, if not then could be fancied to take this after his two length win at Cotlhelstone last month. Burn Baby Byrne could well turn up to join in the battle, with the booking of Isabel Williams who is currently leading the National Ladies Novice title by a slim margin. Burn Baby Byrne is trained by Evan Williams and looks a promising young mare having won her maiden at Lower Machen in May, then finished a short head second last weekend at Trecoed.
The Greenslade Taylor & Hunt-sponsored Ladies race has also attracted many outside raiders which include the Alan Hill-trained Start Royal, a winner of 25 Points to date he must be respected, although now a veteran at 14, he could retire here on a win here . Jimmy The Jet Plan also holds an entry in the Ladies race and could score jockey Alice Stevens some valuable points. Flying the flag for the area could be Skylander for jockey Tomasina Eyston and trainer Sam Holdsworth. Skylander’s only win this season came at Didmarton in March on soft going, but has some decent place form to his credit.
Hugos Horse is a suggestion in the Best Western Tiverton Hotel-sponsored Restricted race after his maiden win at the Axe Vale meeting for trainer Rose Loxton. Jacks Ranger for trainer/jockey Mark Wilesmith is another to note having scored a three length win at Coldharbour, he then unseated his jockey at Chaddelsey Corbett when in second at the last fence . Both Moonlight Flyer (Camilla Scott) having won his maiden here at the first meeting, and The Overflow (Pippa Moorhouse) who won his maiden here last season, could be battling to keep the prize within the area.
This course offers a fantastic view of Exmoor, together with some thrilling race action.
