PREVIEW: Dart Vale & Haldon Harriers Point-TO-Point, Buckfastleigh, Sunday 17 March 2019

Written by: Donna Harris

Racegoers are in for a treat next weekend where the Dart Vale & Haldon Harriers host their meeting at Buckfastleigh on Sunday 17th March. Having enjoyed Cheltenham festival race week, those attending this meeting will be treated to some competitive racing here, where seven races are on offer, which have attracted over 80 entries. Pony racing, which is sponsored by Salcombe Dairy Ice Cream precedes the main race card with two pony races commencing at 12 noon.

Ashburton Motor Works-sponsor the Restricted race which heads up the main card at 1pm. Local entry Predestined won his maiden here last season, for trainer Gordon Chambers, and looks to handle soft ground. He could come up against entry Skinflint, a recent winner at Great Trethew under Jo Supple, the progressive Scorpion-sired gelding ran second here at the November meeting and looks to be a main danger. Goldbury is another who could go close having won her maiden at Wadebridge then followed that run up with a second at Chaddesley Corbett for the Tracey Parker family team.

Totnes & Bridgetown Race Co sponsor the Men’s Open in which the Dr Massini-sired gelding Spencer Moon(Luke Price) stands out, having already won a Mixed Open this season at Monmouth Show Ground under jockey Byron Moorcroft. Dual course winner Whenharrymetsally is a game mare who has run consistently well for trainer Keith Cumings and jockey Matt Hampton, their recent two-lengths second to Jack Snipe at Chipley Park should be a nice preparation to score here with the benefit of a weight allowance.

The Ladies Open is sponsored by Skinner’s Pet Foods and has attracted nine entries which include an interesting outside raider Degooch, who is a half brother to Brain Power and will figure high in the betting arena if making the trip down from the Cotswold area. Local entries include Dicky Bob (Verity Nicholls) and Double Captain ( Joe Tickle) both having won recently.

The Connolly’s Red Mills-sponsored Intermediate race has attracted 15 entries which include a previous runner up at the February meeting here, Jabbea, for the Mary Sanderson team. Pistol Shoot is another entry to catch the eye, having taken the Restricted race at Bishops Court by 4 lengths under Darren Edwards for trainer Nicola Martin. Both Rosyroo (Louise Cabble) and Pancrace (Tersa Clark) hold entries this weekend respectively at Cothelstone and Larkhill meetings, with either proving dangerous if connections choose to run here.

The Open Maiden race has already been divided, with those catching the eye in the first division are the two Joe Tickle entries Trebors Twinkle, and debutant for the yard Feu des Malberaux . The second division any market support could be worth following for recent Barbury third Don’t Ask Us (Keith Cumings), Monmouth runner-up Not At All (Jason Warner), and Western Whiskey who ran third at Great Trethew for the Dean Summersby yard. These races are sponsored by Winston Pincombe and Barton Sawmills.

Finally up is the Members race which has been kindly sponsored by Mr Charlie Stanley, who has won this race four times with his horse Beuvron who holds an entry again here. His opposition this time could be from the Nikki Frost-trained Minimalistic, who recorded a 16 length win here at the February meeting under jockey Josh Newman. Another local entry that could also be snapping at Beuvron’s heels is O’Maonlai for keen young jockey Tamby Welch, looking to follow up on their third at Great Trethew.

The course at Buckfastleigh offers fantastic viewing, it is easily located off the A38. There will be plenty of trade stands, hot food tent, bar, bookies and a great atmosphere for all the family to enjoy. Entrance to the course is £10 per person with children 16 and under free. Dogs on leads welcome. Post code TQ11 OLT.
