Firstly, the organisers deserve much credit for getting thismeeting onat this new course, having battled to defeatthe recentverywet weather. The jockeys I spoke with praised the condition of thecourse and the fences. The track is quitesharp with almost three circuits.
A lot offamiliarold facesgraced both sides of the betting ring at the new venue.A lot of smiling facesin factfrom thetenmenwith thesatchels after the first two races.
WillBiddick’sfirst ride of the season, four year old Queens Legacy in the young horse Maiden was alwaysa shade ofodds-on with 4-5 ruling at the off. She slipped up when holding every chance on the final bend, but this granddaughterofPandaShandyis suretowinraces. The winnerMacca’sStowaway looked fit,but was friendless in the ring and drifted from 7-2 to 6-1. Her form under rules looked suspect, but she stormed home under 41-year-oldMervWoodward,who was deputisingin the saddlefortemporarilysidelined owner/trainer Jimmy Cole. The runner upJaneslittlevoice(8’s to 5’s) kept on but was no match for the winner.
Nine of the ten entries for the second race (Conditions) turned up. Hello George wasoriginallychalked up at 4-1 in a place, but that was soon snapped up, and the useful ex-Hobbs gelding, now in WillBiddick’syard and ridden by the talented Frenchman NathanVergne, started 7-4 favourite. I have rarely seen two horses going hammer and tongs well clear outin front like Hello George and Marten (12’s into 10’s)for the best part of the last mile and a half. They raced stride for stridewith neither giving an inchuntil Evan David and Marten got the verdict on the nod right onthe post.MaryVesteytrains the winner, who seemed to have lost his way underrules ,for her father(LordVestey)atStowellPark
Okay,two-nil to the bookies, but the punters soon got one back thanks to TheRoestone(solidevensfav)whoonly had a ten minutes tripto the track from just up the road atThorverton. The Vinnie Roe gelding relished the groundunder TomChaninandwas always holding MrJaggers(9-2) afterthird homeSecond Chapter(5-4 from 2’s)had ruined his chance with a blunder three out.
I thought that Bishops Road was the goods in the Mixed Open, but he drifted from 4-6 to evensfav, and couldn’t get to grips with DonBersy(3’s into 7-4) despite Bradley Gibbs putting up 5 lbs overweight on the winner. After his usual hesitancy at the start, DonBersywas soon in front and was always holding Bishops Road. The winnerstrainer Ryan Potter runs a shrewd yardat Ross-on-Wyeand is worth keeping an eye onthis season
Punters got it right in the Intermediate with Waterloo Warrior (4-6.Evens, 4-5fav), given a typicalBiddickride to overcome Robin Why Not (9-4 to 2’s).The Warriortook command on the bottom bend. Formerly a ColinTizzardinmate,Waterloo Warriorhad suffered fromseconditisunder rules and was far from straightforward. He could make into a fairpointer.
The getting out stakes(OpenMaiden) saw the obligatory Welsh trained winner asIusetaluvheronce(memories of the Saw Doctorssong) made all undera positive ride fromByron Moorcroft to land the odds (10-11favfrom 6-4).This seven-year-old had only modest form under rules but looks capableof scoring again. TheinexperiencedJoeTidballgave the runner upTicklebellylane(14’s to 12’s) a grand ride for a novice.
The wheel is come full circle. I am here ~ Lear. William Shakespeare
What you mean Mr Shakespeare is that it has only been 22 weeks since we last got together in Devon and here we are again.
Yes, a new season, a new course, and a newly formed Club meeting gave a fresh feeling to the launch of the 2019/20 British point-to-point season m at Dunsmore near Silverton, Devon.
Clerk of the course Norman Chanin and his team had worked hard to combat the recent bad weather to get the course ready. They were rewarded with a good sized crowd and commendations about the track and the fences from jockeys. Even the sun made an appearance
The Dunsmore Club meeting hosted runners from far and wide, but it was a Tavistock based mare who struck the first blow for Devon in the opening Tiverton hotel sponsored Maiden race for four to six-year olds. This was Macca’sStowaway, formerly in training with Christian Williams, and recommended to Jimmy Cole by Nick Scholfield.
Currently sidelined through injury, 37-year-old Jimmy Cole has been a popular pointing figure for some time in the Devon & Cornwall area as an owner / trainer/ rider. He entrusted the steering on this occasion to fellow veteran jockey MervWoodward. “I think that is my 50th winner including nine hunter chases. I went wide to avoid the softest ground,” reported the 41-year-old rider whose day job is lorry driving.
Will Biddick’s quest to retain his National title ended in the soft Dunsmore turf in the first race as Queen’s Legacy slipped up on the home bend when holding every chance. The seven-times champion jockey soon made amends however with a comfortable success on Waterloo Warrior in the Exeter Racecourse Intermediate. This seven-year-old, qualified with the Cotswold Vale Farmers, shook off front running Robin Why Not (“kept hanging right”, said jockey Darren Andrews) in the home straight to score by six lengths. Jake Slatter, who trains at Toddington near Cheltenham, saddled the ex-Colin Tizzard gelding for his mother. “Will rode him exactly as planned,” said the trainer, as the jockey remarked, “He jumped well today and is a nice sort. The further he went the better he was”.
Gloucestershire also supplied the winner of the Heltorsponsored Conditions race which saw nine of the ten entries face the starter. Lord Vestey’s seven-year-old Marten, sent off at 10-1, prevailed by a short head after a demanding neck and neck battle throughout the final circuit with runner up Hello George (Nathan Vergne). Evan David had the mount on the winner, trained by the owner’s daughter Mary at Stowell Park. “I have four in training. This horse hadn’t won for a few years and I am still in shock,” said Mary Vestey. 27-year-old Evan David reported that, “It was very close and I got the nod on the line. He is an out and out stayer and would do more on a galloping track,” The successful jockey works in Ben Pauling’s National Hunt yard.
The Valley Construction Mixed Open went to the consistent Don Bersy who stayed on well under Bradley Gibbs to hold the favourite Bishops Road. “He is a busy horse and gets himself fit but can be very quirky at the start.” said trainer Ryan Potter who operates from the yard occupied at one time by leading trainer John Edwards at Ross-on-Wye.
The Roestone needed only a ten minutes journey from Robert Chanin’s Thorverton yard to strike for the locals in the Porlock Weir Hotel & Luttrell Arms Restricted. The Vinnie Roe five-year-old proved a deserving winner for owners Andrew and Sue Knox, staying on gamely to hold Mr Jaggersafter third placed Second Chapter had ruined his chance with a mistake three out. “Andrew has done a lot of work on the course,” said the trainer, who reflected that his sons Ian and Tom had sourced the winner in Ireland as an unbroken three-year-old. Tom Chanin had the mount on The Roestone who, “has come in stronger and matured now.” according to the jockey.
The Gingerland Livery sponsored Open Maiden winner Iusetaluvheronce has an intriguing name but is probably no rock star. The seven-year-old did it the hard way out in front all the way to see off his five opponents under the urgings of the talented Byron Moorcroft. “If he wins a couple of point-to-points he may go back to Tim Vaughan,” reported owner/trainer Luke Price who houses 20 pointers at his Ynysybwl yard near Pontypridd.
Mats are going down to aid vehicle movement in and out of course.
