The opening Members race is sponsored by Ashburton Motors. This looks to be a battle among the locals, with The Meters Running for the Gordon Chambers yard looking to follow up on his Great Trethew win last weekend. They could come up against Rebecca Welch’s Somewhere To Be who ran second at Wadebridge, but found the conditions tough when pulling up at Great Trethew last weekend, and Moonaro another local entry who has clocked up some decent previous place form for the Kingsbridge based Darke family.

The feature race of the day is the £1000 West Country Men’s Open Champion Chase which is sponsored by Totnes & Bridgetown Races Co Ltd. Entries include previous National Hunt winner Sausalito Sunrise for the Alexandra Dunn team, he won a Hunter Chase at Hexham last season, and started this season with an impressive ten length win at Cocklebarrow in January. Fishy Story for trainer Stuart Sampson, could figure and was impressive when she bounced back from a year’s break when she battled on for a short head win ahead of Sixteen Letters at Milborne St Andrew last month. Three Faces West (Bethan Childs) has strong claims after his win at this track in January under jockey Nathan Vergne, although holds an entry at the Cothelstone meeting on Saturday. Local entry Dicky Bob (Verity Nicholls), now a veteran, knows this track well and could figure here.

In the Exeter Racecourse Intermediate, team Summersby’s Banco de Logos ran a decent three length second at Chipley Park and should be among the favourites with jockey Darren Edwards on a winning roll. Outside raider Hard Ground (Gearoid Costello) won his restricted at Higham last month and is the highest rated, but looks to prefer a sound surface which he may not find here unless the ground dries. The Galloping Bear for the Ben Clarke team looks progressive with wins at Ffoss Las and Wadebridge, with the ground not seeming an issue for him could score again for jockey Darren Andrews.

The popular grey Dicky Bob also holds an entry in the Skinners Ladies Open race, which may be a preferred option for the gelding, with the booking of local jockey Millie Wonnacott to ride. Millie also looks to have the option of riding her mother’s owned and trained Heaney who was impressive when winning a Hunter Chase at Exeter last April. This race looks very competitive with recent Chipley Park winner Silsol for jockey Ella Orttewell, Badbury Rings winner Master Baker for Jo Supple, and promising young mare Goldbury having the benefit of a mare’s weight allowance and won nicely at the Wadebridge December meeting under Natalie Parker, also among the entries.

This meeting holds an exciting point-to-point Flat race for four and five year olds, and  is a good opportunity to see some potential stars of the future. This has been kindly sponsored by Philip Warren Butchers. Most of the 16 entries are experiencing their first time racing, although Le Slithy Tove has the benefit of a fair effort at Barbury Castle in December and could go well for jockey Millie Wonnacott. Trainer Nicky Martin has an interesting five year old entered named Fevertre, and should be high in the market, also Chris Honour’s Grumpy Freya catches the eye. The four year old’s entered do get a decent weight allowance and market support would be worth following for Indigo Breeze (Gearoid Costelloe), Bravo Buddy (Robert Chanin) also Tipsy Hall for trainer Chris Barber.

The Dawe Hawken & Dodd Open Maiden race for 4,5 & 6yr olds holds 28 entries and could well be divided on the day. Les Jefford holds two entries with Upcott Cross runner up Businessman, and Artic Milly who ran one length second to Cottage Rose at Wadebridge in February, both go well for Millie Wonnacott. Team Summersby has entered Party Tunes, another who holds strong claims after his three and a quarter-length second under Darren Edwards, to Freezing Point at Buckfastleigh. Henry’s Regime looks interesting after his third in a Bumper flat race at Taunton and is now trained and ridden by Merv Woodward.

The Porsche Centre at Exeter sponsor the Mixed Open which has attracted 20 entries.   Navanman for trainer John Heard would looked to have set the standard having already clocked up a seasons treble, but had a hard race at Wadebridge when finishing third and may need more time before returning. Spencer Moon is the highest rated, could make the trip down from Luke Price’s yard. He won his maiden here in 2017 and followed up with another ten Point wins and a Hunter Chase win at Fontwell to add to his form. He may need the run first time out this  season. Three Faces West catches the eye having stayed on well to win recently at Buckfastleigh for trainer Bethan Childs and jockey Nathan Vergne. They then ran eight lengths second at Badbury Rings and should be there at the finish. With The Galloping Bear (Ben Clarke) on a season double, and Goldbury’s Intermediate win at Wadebridge (Laura Parker) also puts them in the mix if progressing.

In the PPORA Novice Riders race which is sponsored by Group Travel, team Summersby is again double handed with Cloudy Music and Clondaw Bunny. Cloudy Music ran well last season with some decent runner up places on four occasions, and looks a good schoolmaster for Charlotte Summersby who will be looking to improve on their place form this season and clock up her first victory. Clondaw Bunny was an unlucky unseat at Larkhill in January, and could again have the booking of promising young jockey Connor Houlihan who himself rode a double at the February Wadebridge meeting. Inch Rock for the Ed Walker team looks the main danger, having previously won his Restricted race at this course, and his recent close third behind stable mate winner Wind Tor at Wadebridge last month under jockey Pippa Glanville must be respected.

Finally up is the Jeffreys-sponsored Restricted race in which another Ed Walker-trained recruit catches the eye in Gio’s Girl. She won her maiden at Flete Park, then missed a season and came back with a 10 length second to Neetside at Wadebridge in December, followed by a length second to Five Gold Bars at Buckfastleigh in January under Will Biddick. Minella Beag is another option here for the Walker/Biddick combination, and could well follow up on their maiden win at Chipley Park in January, although the jockey may have ride commitments at the Charlton Horethorne meeting.

The Tattersalls Cheltenham Open Maiden race for 4&5 year olds starts the main race card off, and entry Revels Hill, for trainer Chris Barber, catches the eye having had the benefit of a run at Milborne St Andrew earlier this month, he could improve for his outing where he travelled well until unseating his rider. Debutants Don’t Rightly Know(Ed Walker), Opening Bid (Stuart Sampson) and the Sophie Lacey-trained Piano Stairs will be worth following if the market suggests.

Exeter Racecourse sponsor the Intermediate race which has attracted the biggest entry of 26. Five Gold Bars for trainer/jockey Rob Hawker won well here at the last meeting and looks to set the standard if progressing. The popular £1000 winners only Mixed Open race, sponsored by Totnes & Bridgetown Co, is the feature of the day. Last years winner Master Baker, for trainer Les Jefford, could be out again to defend his title under jockey Jo Supple, but there are many challengers entered. These include multiple point winner Navanman for the John Heard team who will be fresh from his win at Chipley Park, along with recent Cocklebarrow winner Sausalito Sunrise, who is an ex Philip Hobbs recruit who briefly went to Olly Murphys yard and now in training with Alexandra Dunn. Silsol is another Chipley Park winner and is an ex Paul Nicholls inmate who holds strong claims for young jockey Ella Orttewell. Don Bersy, Three Faces West and Dicky Bob are also among the entries which is a potential thriller not to be missed

Going Update

21st February 2020 at 15:29

We’ve been to the course at Wadebridge today with the Clerk of the Course. The going is GOOD TO SOFT, SOFT IN PLACES” with a good covering of grass. The sand will be levelled on Sunday morning. It’s looking very inviting!

Thursday, 20th February 2020 at 09:31

The Western fixture at Wadebridge has sourced doctors, vets, officials and all other personnel needed for their third try at holding a point-to-point this Sunday (23 Feb).

Tuesday, 18th February 2020

Unfortunately, due to the ground conditions, the East Cornwall Foxhounds have been forced to cancel its point to point at Great Trethew this coming Sunday 23rd February, and is now looking for another date. The Western point to point at Wadebridge, which had been abandoned, is now intending to run in its place on Sunday due to a gap in the calendar, if it can find the necessary officials. This meeting is will be a great day so please support it!

Entries will stand in both cases.

The PPA and PPSA are doing all that they can in these very difficult conditions to support the fixtures and innovative ideas that are being proposed. However, it is very difficult to put on fixtures, or change dates, at short notice due to the requirements these days. If you can help in any way, please do not hesitate to offer your assistance to your local fixture. In particular, we have a shortage of available doctors for some rearranged meetings.

13 February at 13:11

THE RESCHEDULED WESTERN POINT TO POINT HAS BEEN POSTPONED. We will consider rearranging at a later date.

12 February at 16:35

The going at Wadebridge is good to soft, soft in places. But we are still short of a vet and the weather forecast is a real concern.

10 February at 14:25

⭐️ News on postponed fixtures from the PPA ⭐️

Following the postponement of all three fixtures on Sunday due to Storm Ciara, the following rearranged dates have been agreed, dependent on the fixtures managing to find all the necessary officials required:

➡️ Western (Wadebridge) Sat 15 Feb

All timings and entries remain the same. We thank all fixtures involved for their pragmatic support in finding a solution best for everyone.

8 February at 10:45

⭐️ WADEBRIDGE POSTPONED ⭐️

Unfortunately due to the forecast of potentially dangerous high-winds the Western meeting at Wadebridge (Sunday Feb 9) has been postponed.

News on any plans to rearrange to follow in due course.

– The Point-To-Point Authority

7 February at 15:26

Friday 3pm. The going at Wadebridge is good to soft.

7 February at 11:24

Western Point to Point. The Course Inspector was happy with the course yesterday and a going update will be posted later today. The weather forecast is obviously a concern at this stage and the Chairman of Stewards will make a decision tomorrow.

4 February at 23:54

The going at Wadebridge today was good, good to soft in places.

1 February at 16:45

The Clerk of the Course has been to Wadebridge today and has reported that the going this morning was soft. We’ve had sunshine and a drying wind today and more dry weather is forecast from Wednesday onwards. There is a good grass covering and the course has been chain harrowed and rolled. So it’s looking good for the Western Point to Point next Sunday, Feb 9th. Entries close on Monday at 12.30pm.

30 January at 16:10

The course at Wadebridge is well draining and the weather forecast next week is mainly dry with just light rain on a couple of days. So please get your entries in for another great day’s racing. Entries close on Monday at 12.30pm.

Preview extract:

With the recent deluge of rain and the postponement of the East Cornwall fixture at Great Trethew, the Western Hunt have been able to stage their meeting this coming Sunday 23rd February at The Royal Cornwall Showground. The team organising the event have worked hard to ensure enough Doctor, Veterinary and Official cover for the event to go ahead.  Another action packed quality race day will be on offer, with a start time of 12 noon attracting 59 entries, which stand as originally received.

The large covered barn offers all facilities such as catering, bar, food and bookies along with usual trade stands for country shopping. Parking is accessed through tarmac roads. Entrance to the course is £10 per person with under 16’s free. The course is located at The Royal Cornwall Showground off A39 West of Wadebridge. Postcode PL27 7JE.

Will Biddick’s entry Sylvies Dance is 5lb better off in the weights, and won her maiden at Flete last season by an impressive 30 lengths. Thechaseison looks an interesting entry, out of Chris Barbers yard, should go well if following up on his eight length win at Larkhill earlier this month.

The feature race of the day will be the Totnes & Bridgetown-sponsored Mixed Open race which has an entry from in-form trainer Rose Loxton with Caid Du Berlais, a winner of all of his six Points to date and a Hunter Chase winner at Punchestown for the past two seasons, he sets the standard here if by passing the Larkhill meeting the day before. Local trainer Claire Wonnacott will be hoping her entry Heaney will go well for daughter Millie to ride. Millie Wonnacott will still be on a high from her win on Fingerontheswitch at Kempton Park last weekend. She has previously won a Hunter Chase at Exeter on Heaney, the combination have won four of his nine starts in Points and placed second or third in the remaining five. Crown of Thorns out of the Sarah Pidsley yard won his Restricted race at this course last season, he looks again to have the booking of reigning champion Will Biddick aboard and could be considered. Silsol has decent form under rules having won over 128k and is a ride here for Ella Orttewell, who was a winning combination with There’s No Panic last season. Silsol looks to have potential to get her back in the winners enclosure again. Marcle Ridge is another to catch the eye having won a Hunter Chase at Cheltenham in May although is another to hold an entry at Larkhill on Saturday, and the entry of multiple point winner Soul Kaliber for Darren Edwards and team Summersby who are also in form should make this race one not to be missed.

The PPORA Novice Riders race, which is sponsored by Ray Davis Foods, looks really competitive with The Last But One entered which is an option for trainer Tom Malone to consider. Honest Deed also holds an entry, and won at this track last season for team Summersby, Also Kernel Victor(Ed Walker) who was held in third that day, Conor Houlihan has the ride here on Kernel Victor, and will be keen try and reverse those placings. Ramble On also holds an entry in this race for the Luke Price team, although is yet to tackle this track, however a winner of nine of his starts to date could have regular jockey Byron Moorcroft aboard and prove a danger.

When autumn starts to give way to winter then we know it’s pointing time, and with the build up to the start of the season, along the new course at Dunsmore for the Club meeting near Silverton hosting the first of 25 scheduled for the Devon & Cornwall area, it is no surprise to have attracted some good quality entries on Sunday November 17. Six races are on offer with a start time of 12 noon. Over 50 entries have been received.

Along with the racing will be great catering facilities such as home made Moore’s Pasty’s, hot sausages and burgers from the local Silverton butchers, along with a pop up bar from Exe Valley Brewery. The Heltor-sponsored Conditions race has previous Cothelstone winner Hello George for 23 year-old owner/jockey Nathan Vergne entered. Hello George was previously rated 135 when in training with Phillip Hobbs. They could be taken on by nine-time winner Summer Sound (Francesca Nimmo) who under jockey Luke Scott made all when winning at Chaddesley Corbett on good going. Multiple Point-to-Point winner Hawkhurst for trainer Alan Hill is another to catch the eye having won ten of his 16 starts between the flags, although current connections may chose his entry at the Cottenham meeting this weekend as a preferred option.

Valley Constructions have sponsored the Mixed Open race in which Bishops Road for trainer Thomas David sets the standard, having decent form with a Cheltenham Hunter Chase win under jockey Zack Baker who is currently working for Nigel Twiston-Davies and retains the ride here, of the eight entered they look to be the likely favourite. Don Bersey has previous hurdle form under rules and won an Open Point at Cothelstone by a distance under jockey Bradley Gibbs so could run well if turning up here. Rob The Getaway also looks an interesting entry on breeding and previous French form, he also holds an entry in the Exeter Racecourse Intermediate race which follows.

Will Biddick has already won the gentleman’s title, and is neck and neck with Darren Edwards for the area championship. Darren Edwards is currently one point ahead and is booked to ride here on the Dean Summersby-trained Soul Kaliber in the opening Tattersalls Ireland-sponsored Conditions race. They could well follow up on their impressive 12-length win last weekend at Bratton Down when Soul Kaliber delighted his syndicate owners ‘The Little Acres Racing Club’ with their fourth win with him this season. The Les Jefford-trained Ryves Rockey holds an entry and is sure to go well for regular jockey Millie Wonnacott, who has already secured the Ladies area title along with the Lady novice title this season. The combination ran well when taking the Conditions race at Upcott Cross by a length ahead of Cloudy Music last month.

Local trainer Roy Smith has an interesting entry in the Kivells-sponsored Restricted race which follows with Baby Sherlock. He should be well fancied having run well when winning at the Exmoor meeting at Bratton Down under jockey Paul John. This may be a stiffer ask with recent Bratton winner Basher Brian (Byron Moorcroft) and the Getaway-sired gelding Tucks Bergin (Chris Williams) who ran second at the Exmoor Bratton meeting behind Lure des Pres, under the jockey on fire James King, who scored a treble at the Tiverton Staghounds meeting at Bratton last weekend, among the nine entries.

Ryves Rockey holds an entry in the Barum Stud-sponsored Intermediate race if not running in the earlier Conditions race. Either way it could give the soon to be crowned area Ladies Champion, Millie Wonnacott, a double on the day for the Jefford team. Although it looks to be a potentially hot race, with last weekends Bratton Restricted winner Airpur Debois(Gareth Moore) for James King, Holy Water (Luke Price) a dual season winner, Basher Brian(Byron Moorcroft) another Bratton winner, along with Lower Machen winner Ruperra Tom (Michael Bowen) who is another option ride for James King. James could give up either of his booked mounts to his boss Will Biddick as a possible spare ride which could clinch Will the area tittle if it’s a winner.
