This meeting holds an exciting point-to-point Flat race for four and five year olds, and is a good opportunity to see some potential stars of the future. This has been kindly sponsored by Philip Warren Butchers. Most of the 16 entries are experiencing their first time racing, although Le Slithy Tove has the benefit of a fair effort at Barbury Castle in December and could go well for jockey Millie Wonnacott. Trainer Nicky Martin has an interesting five year old entered named Fevertre, and should be high in the market, also Chris Honour’s Grumpy Freya catches the eye. The four year old’s entered do get a decent weight allowance and market support would be worth following for Indigo Breeze (Gearoid Costelloe), Bravo Buddy (Robert Chanin) also Tipsy Hall for trainer Chris Barber.

The Dawe Hawken & Dodd Open Maiden race for 4,5 & 6yr olds holds 28 entries and could well be divided on the day. Les Jefford holds two entries with Upcott Cross runner up Businessman, and Artic Milly who ran one length second to Cottage Rose at Wadebridge in February, both go well for Millie Wonnacott. Team Summersby has entered Party Tunes, another who holds strong claims after his three and a quarter-length second under Darren Edwards, to Freezing Point at Buckfastleigh. Henry’s Regime looks interesting after his third in a Bumper flat race at Taunton and is now trained and ridden by Merv Woodward.

The Porsche Centre at Exeter sponsor the Mixed Open which has attracted 20 entries. Navanman for trainer John Heard would looked to have set the standard having already clocked up a seasons treble, but had a hard race at Wadebridge when finishing third and may need more time before returning. Spencer Moon is the highest rated, could make the trip down from Luke Price’s yard. He won his maiden here in 2017 and followed up with another ten Point wins and a Hunter Chase win at Fontwell to add to his form. He may need the run first time out this season. Three Faces West catches the eye having stayed on well to win recently at Buckfastleigh for trainer Bethan Childs and jockey Nathan Vergne. They then ran eight lengths second at Badbury Rings and should be there at the finish. With The Galloping Bear (Ben Clarke) on a season double, and Goldbury’s Intermediate win at Wadebridge (Laura Parker) also puts them in the mix if progressing.

In the PPORA Novice Riders race which is sponsored by Group Travel, team Summersby is again double handed with Cloudy Music and Clondaw Bunny. Cloudy Music ran well last season with some decent runner up places on four occasions, and looks a good schoolmaster for Charlotte Summersby who will be looking to improve on their place form this season and clock up her first victory. Clondaw Bunny was an unlucky unseat at Larkhill in January, and could again have the booking of promising young jockey Connor Houlihan who himself rode a double at the February Wadebridge meeting. Inch Rock for the Ed Walker team looks the main danger, having previously won his Restricted race at this course, and his recent close third behind stable mate winner Wind Tor at Wadebridge last month under jockey Pippa Glanville must be respected.

Finally up is the Jeffreys-sponsored Restricted race in which another Ed Walker-trained recruit catches the eye in Gio’s Girl. She won her maiden at Flete Park, then missed a season and came back with a 10 length second to Neetside at Wadebridge in December, followed by a length second to Five Gold Bars at Buckfastleigh in January under Will Biddick. Minella Beag is another option here for the Walker/Biddick combination, and could well follow up on their maiden win at Chipley Park in January, although the jockey may have ride commitments at the Charlton Horethorne meeting.
