Both the Ladies and Men’s Open races have attracted top class entries. In the Bray Leino-sponsored Ladies race Virak stands out for the Sam Loxton team, having won his last four races which include Hunter Chase wins at both Wincanton and Musselburgh under regular jockey Natalie Parker, however he will probably run at Stratford on Friday evening, this could leave the race for Copain de Classe to snatch, he is another ex National Hunt entry for the Loxton team, and could improve on his third to Famous Clermont at Cothelstone, The Roestone for the Robert Chanin team should be there among the finishers if reproducing his win at Cherrybrook under Martin McIntyre.

The Moore Scarrott Accountants-sponsored Men’s Open has attracted another Loxton team entry in Chameron who won a Hunter Chase at Leicester in February. Chameron’s recent run at Cothelstone saw him finishing second having had a few jumping errors which could have cost him the race that day, although he also holds an entry at Upcott Cross on Monday and connection smay choose there for him to run. Upcott Cross winner River Myth entered for trainer Stuart Sampson, will be looking to follow up on her run at Upcott Cross when coming home the four-length winner that day and has the benefit of a mares weight allowance although she too holds an entry for the Upcott meeting. Recent runner up in a Hunter Chase at Leicester The Muclair for the Camilla Scott team can’t be left out of the equation, they had an unlucky fall last time out at Upcott Cross when ridden by Finn Muirhead.

There are two divisions of the conditions race which are run in the memory of Donna Kingdon. In the first division Where’s Wilma could follow up on her Upcott Cross win under jockey Matt Hampton. Cloudy Music for team Summersby just missed out on a win by a short head at Upcott Cross, Rein du Tout won an Intermediate at Holnicote earlier this month and could repeat that form for jockey Darren Andrews.

Finally there is Totnes & Bridgetown Racing Co Ltd-sponsored Open Maiden race which could go the way of Honest Opinion for the Dean Summersby team to follow up on her four-length second at Upcott Cross earlier this month and will be handy here if not another heading to Upcott Cross on Monday, along with Acaras an outside raider looking dangerous after their second at the Upcott Cross meeting. Jimmy Tew has been a worthy place winner in his points so far for the Janet Ackner team andis another catching the eye.

Eggesford Preview extract

In the opening Chris Hodgson-sponsored Conditions race, Raddon Top could go well for trainer Les Jefford if re-producing his impressive win at Wadebridge and goes well for jockey Conor Houlihan,  The Roestone for the Robert Chanin team also catches the eye on his Cherrybrook Intermediate win last month and goes well for Martin McIntyre. Trainer Camilla Scott holds an entry with The Mulcair who ran second in a Hunter Chase in Leicester in March, and is another who could go well if defying top weight under young Finn Muirhead. Unioniste will run an honest race and should be there in the frame at the finish for the Biddick family team.

The Bridgetown & Totnes Race Co Ltd-sponsored Intermediate race holds a strong entry for the Heard family with Cottage Rose, who was a worthy winner at Flete Park last month. They could come up against outside raider and winner a Higham and Edgcote Ahead Of The Game for the Jason Warner team. Also Danny Archer for team Jefferson, another with recent previous winning form who is progressing fast into Intermediate company. Where’s Wilma is another highly rated and could improve on her recent second in an Open at Flete Park, and goes well for jockey Matt Hampton.

The Eggesford Champion Mixed Open race, which is sponsored by Simpkins Edwards, looks to be the feature of the day with over £600 in prize money. Entries include ex National Hunt and multiple Point-to-Point winners Chameron and Virak for trainer Sam Loxton. Virak also holds an entry at Holnicote this weekend, and connections may choose to run him there. Navanman  would be a popular family win at this track for trainer John Heard, and could follow up on his Hunter Chase spin around Cheltenham last month when he came home a creditable one-and-a half  length third. The well bred Galileo-sired gelding Los Alamos for the Luke Price team could go close if turning up here and follow up on his Open win at Trebudannon two weeks ago.

In the Waie Inn & Ford Fuels-sponsored Restricted race, Will Biddick could have a winning training and riding performance on Florrie Webb to follow up on their win at Cothelstone, if not choosing the Holnicote meeting on Saturday where they also hold an entry. Along with Party Tunes for team Summersby, who could follow up on their impressive 20-length win at Trebudannon two weeks ago under Darren Edwards.

Finally up is the Totnes & Bridgetown Race Co Ltd-sponsored Conditions race, which also holds plenty of talent with The Last But One (Tom Malone) looking to reproduce the form of his Trebudannon victory. He does hold entries in the earlier races here in which he could run well, along with his Holnicote option entry. Cloudy Music (Dean Summersby) will run a sound race under Charlotte Summersby, and The Mulcair for trainer Camilla Scott could opt for this race over his earlier entry.

Flete Park Races Course Updates:

Ground will be watered during the week to achieve Good, Good to Firm by race day as per the last meeting. All bends have been moved to fresh ground. Showers are forecast later in the week but we will NOT be relying on them. (updated 5 pm Sunday 25th April)

Flete Park Races Preview extract:

The second meeting to be held on the beautiful Flete Park Estate in South Devon, takes place this coming Saturday 1st May. The meeting will again be held behind closed doors due to current Covid restriction, but can be watched online via eventbrite live streaming. The main six race card commences at 2pm and has attracted 77 entries.

Flete Park Races Live Stream

Live streaming of the races with race commentary and all day presentation with interviews of participants led by former BBC racing correspondent Cornelius Lysaght is on offer for the eight Point-To-Point races, with a start time of 1.00pm with the first of the races.

There is a fee of £10 plus a small Eventbrite admin fee to view the race meeting, which is the same cost as if you attended as a spectator, and the sport needs the income from live streaming to ensure its future.

Marchand Petit jointly sponsor the opening Maiden race with Totnes & Bridgetown Racing Co Ltd. This race could go the way of entry Not At All with previous place form for outside raider Jason Warner, and for jockey James King to continue his challenge for the men’s title. Chips For Free (Mary Sanderson) is another with decent previous place form and looks a decent ride for Rob Hawker.

The well bred Dr Time was impressive on winning his maiden race under Josh Newman in style here two weeks ago, and could take the Restricted race which is sponsored by Print Concerns supporting the NHS. Florrie Web also catches the eye being trained by Will Biddick, he won the members race at Cothelstone by eight lengths and could well re-produce that form here. O’Faolains Lad (Stuart Penny) could be another option for Will Biddick to ride, and could go close after his second at Cothelstone, where he could come on for that run.

Flete Park Races Preview extract

Totnes & Bridgetown Racing Co Ltd have added extra sponsorship for four of the races on the card which include the Skinners four- mile Ladies Open race and looks to be the feature of the day. Southfield Theatre is an entry who won over 170k under rules, and has been on the point-to-point scene for the Bradstock family for a number of years since retiring from National Hunt. This 13 year-old gelding is still part owned by his breeder Mrs Angela Yeoman, and is a credit to her stud farm. He also holds an entry in the Hunter Chase at Cheltenham on Friday this week, and connections may wish to target him there. Unioniste is another ex National Hunt horse who clocked up some more impressive form under rules gaining 250k in prize money, and now looks to be taking to pointing. He could improve on his second here two weeks ago for the Biddick team who may have young Ella Orttewell aboard, who has already tasted success at this track. Know The Score won here two weeks ago and could provide another winner for the inform Les Jefford team, this time with Jo Supple aboard.

Next up is the Brewin Dolphin-sponsored Conditions race in which local entry It’s A Steal would be a popular winner for the Lee Glanville team and follow up on their third here at the previous meeting, although they could be up against Journey Juice (Ed Walker) who got the better of them that day and could be the main threat, For Rita (Fran Nimmo) and Our Henrietta (Alice Procter) have both clocked up some decent form and any market support should be noted. If Chill Factor (Will Biddick)  runs here he is likely to put up a brave performance and deny a high weight penalty.

Charlotte Summersby is booked to have the option of three rides in this, with Cloudy Music for her family team Summersby, and could follow up on their third here at the previous meeting. Another from the team as a possible ride is Chosen Lucky if bouncing back from his run last weekend at Trebudannon, and Eric The Third a winner under Charlotte last weekend at Trebudannon. Syracuse’s Dream got his head in front when winning here at the last meeting at this track, with a good training performance by his patient owner/trainer Deborah Treener, and he could be close at the finish again under young Barnaby Treneer.

REPORT OF THE EAST DEVON POINT-TO-POINT AT BISHOPS COURT, OTTERY ST MARY on 24th OCTOBER 2020

WRITTEN BY GRANVILLE TAYLOR

“Well, they are gone, and here I must remain”

From a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge: 1772 – 1834: English poet who lived at Ottery St Mary. This famous resident had also gone long before Mr Oliver Carter opened the racecourse in 1979.

In fact, most people had “gone” as the new British point-to-point season got under way last Saturday (24 Oct) at Ottery St Mary under strict protocol due to COVID-19 stipulations. In the earliest ever start to a British season, the East Devon race meeting had to take place behind closed doors.  Only essential personnel were allowed in. (luckily including me)

On a thoroughly wet, blustery day, seven times National champion jockey Will Biddick took the honours with a treble. “My best ever start to a season” said the Truro born rider.

Art Mauresque set the ball rolling under a copybook Biddick ride in the opening Hunt race. The Tom Malone trained gelding eased into the lead in the home straight to hold Raddon Top who was one of a trio of Leslie Jefford trained runners in the race. One of the other Jefford runners, Ryves Rocky finished a creditable third giving a memorable first race ride to Kirsty O’Dell.

Biddick teamed up with the David Maxwell owned Jalatuwih to take the Men’s Open after a spirited duel with Navanman (Darren Edwards). The pair had the race to themselves in the closing stages. Biddick’s mount proved the stronger on the run to the judge, looking like a top class hunter chase prospect. Trainer Beth Childs reported, “He came from Philip Hobbs to run in point-to-points.” He was described by his jockey as, “A classy horse under rules and the aim is to go to the Foxhunter at Cheltenham. He travelled strong. I gave him a click and he moved on”

Taunton bloodstock agent Tom Malone provided Will Biddick with his treble when saddling Starsky to win the second section of the Maiden for six-year-olds and over. This time the leading rider limped into the parade ring having been kicked about like a football by most of the field after falling from A Tipple or Two at half way in the previous race.

The trainer, who also owns Starsky said,” I originally bought him as a store. He was at Ditcheat for a while, then the owners wanted him moved on so I took him back. He is still a maiden under rules so we have that option, but plan to keep him pointing for a while. In typical bloodstock agent fashion Malone added of the six-year-old Shantou gelding, “He is for sale.”.

The earlier division of this race also went to another ex-inmate of the Paul Nicholls Ditcheat yard when the six-year-old Grey Getaway came clear after Takeabid had fallen at the last jump.  Matt Hampton, who now trains and rides the South Dorset qualified gelding for a small partnership said. “He is a nice horse. We picked him up in February as he had lost his way a bit under rules. It is nice to get his head in front and get a bit of confidence back,”  The well bred six-year-old still has a long way to go to pay off the £190,000 he cost previous connections as a four-year-old.

The easiest winner of the day came in the Ladies’ Open when the useful ex-chaser Red Indian travelled from his Leicestershire base to stroll home by a distance unchallenged under Alice Stevens. The winner was in command from a long way out in the colours of Sir Johny Weatherby, and looks set for a successful campaign. The jockey enthused, “He was delightful to ride and I had a great time.”

The Tattersalls Cheltenham sponsored Maiden for four and five-year-olds attracted a quality field of 13 mostly unraced horses. Four-year-old debutant Kyntara came out on top, pulling clear of his rivals under Alex Edwards after the second last to score by four lengths from Great Colewood and Feu Des Malberaux. A good topped youngster by Kayf Tara, the winner was sent out by Shropshire based Mel Rowley, a likely harbinger of many more successes for the yard this season. The promising gelding is out of a winning hurdler from a good jumping family. Kyntara cost £30,000 as a three-year-old, from the Tattersalls Ireland Derby sales.

There was drama at the last fence in the NHS Print Concern Restricted when the strong challenging Papal Present fell, bringing down Prove Me Wrong. This left Ryan’s Fancy in command , and the ex-Irish pointer was not hard  pressed to hold the giant sized Schiap Hill.  The winner was ridden by Immy Robinson, whose mother Caroline made history by riding Eliogarty to win both the Cheltenham and Aintree Foxhunters’ in the 1980’s under her maiden name of Caroline Beasley. She remarked, “We bought him at Doncaster sales, he had won a point-to-point, wasn’t a big price and is by Getaway.”  Immy modestly added, “He did it all. I just held on to him as long as I could.”

The seven-year-old winning hurdler Sparkleandshine lived up to his name with a 20 lengths success over the Hobbs runner Rolling Dylan in the PPORA Club Members’. Tommie O’Brien steered home the winner who cost only £3,000 at Ascot last December. “It was probably best that he couldn’t run for a while and put on condition during COVID”, said trainer Alan Hill.

The East Devon organisers deserve much praise for their considerable efforts to put this fixture on. It was also the first of the 25 scheduled meetings in Devon and Cornwall to be live streamed this season.
