GRANVILLE’S BETTING GOSSIP – EAST CORNWALL POINT-TO-POINT AT GREAT TRETHEW 29TH MARCH 2015

Website_EC2_Money_Talks_Banner

Firstly well done to the East Cornwall organisers who were determined for the meeting to go ahead in the face of the wild Cornish weather on Sunday.

Six of our finest local bookmakers braved the elements – or would have braved the elements except they set up shop inside a small marquee. The boards would have been blown away as far as Liskeard in their normal position outside. Commentator Mark Dennis summed up the day best when announcing, “This meeting is for the true enthusiast or mentally challenged,”

In truth the small crowd found it difficult to drum up much business for betting, perhaps as well for punters since most results went in favour of the layers.

CARRY ON MOTHER was backed from 6-4 to evens favourite in the opener which was delayed while the course was put together again after wind damage. She had shown promise on her debut over this course and distance three weeks ago, but found two newcomers too good for her this time. The winner ARTY BELLA is not very big but is stoutly bred and can improve further. She drifted out to 5-1 from 5-2. APPLESOLUTELY also took a trip in the betting out to 7-1 from 4’s but ran really well to finish second.

It was a similar story in the other Open Maiden won by the six-year-old CAILLEACH ANNIE. This well made mare was easy to back at 7’s and 8’s for her debut appearance in the Du Plessis colours before getting the better of BRANDY AND RED (steady at 7’s) coming down the hill.

BLAZING WHALE proved a disappointing favourite in the Mixed Open. I had got my fingers burnt on this good Buckfastleigh winner on his latest effort in a Chepstow hunter chase (moderate sixth) and was not prepared to get involved here at evens and 11-10. Two of the most progressive youngsters in the area fought out the finish with WELSTONEDRUID (6-4 out to 2’S) beating WHENHARRYMETSALLY (solid 3’s).

SILVER TOKEN extended his winning sequence to four under Harry Cobden in the Novice Riders’. He defied a small penalty with easejust like a 1-4 shot should.

A tricky three-runner race for the Intermediate saw all three starting at odds against. BLINDING LIGHTS (5-2 touched 11-4) just held INFAMOUS GROUSE (7-4 to 2’s) despite edging left on the run in. The favourite WAY BEFORE DAWN (11-10 to 5-4) was outpaced coming down the hill.

In a driving finish to the last race (by which time only a bus load of spectators were left) GREAT CAMANOE (7-2 to 3’s) prevailed by a neck over THEATRE GOER (2’s to 9-4). AAH BLESS was backed to win a Maiden last time out and again attracted support up in class here (4’s to 3’s). He finished a tired third here.
