Rhys Williams’s Silverton Point-To-Point commentary, Black Forest Lodge, Sunday 18th January 2015

Website_SilvCommentary_Banner

A sunny and dry day resulted in a decent sized crowd. Some good racing with a few class performances and exciting finishes. The ground was sticky soft ground.

Confined

14 runners lined up for the opening race on the card. Welstonedruid went off 11-4 favourite and prevailed in a very tight finish with Mic’s Delight. Welstonedruid looked to have settled it shortly after the last but seemed to idle on the run in and almost got beat. Bradley Brook (2-1 out to 5-1) ran quite well in 3rd considering he was carrying a 10lb penalty.

Restricted Div 1

The Restricted was split on the day. Division 1 went to What About Will at 9-1, who was the only runner still galloping in the closing stages and some very weary horses clambered over the last. Kerry Mganga finished 2nd and Bamboleo 3rd, after Gentle Duke stopped to a walk on the run in after jumping the last in a clear 3rd. Larkhill winner Themanfromcork was a disappointing 4-6 favourite.

Restricted Div 2

The favourites flip-flopped in div 2 as Soixante Six was backed into 6-4 favourite while Full Trottle drifted from evens out to 9-4. These two fought out the finish with Full Trottle getting a crucial advantage of a couple of lengths after 2 out and held Soixante Six after the last. They pulled well clear of the 3rd, Sparkling Miss, who shaped with some promise.

Ladies Open

A warm contest for the Ladies Open with the 6 runners including multiple winner Byerley Bear, hunter chase 2nd Catspan and the Steve Flook trained pair Foundry Square and Rumbury Grey. Having led, Byerley Bear was headed on the run to 3 out and looked in a bit of trouble but he rallied well under pressure and got the crucial inside line on the final bend as Catspan and Foundry Square challenged. Foundry Square tried to challenge after turning in but couldn’t get to Byerley Bear who won at 4-5. Foundry Square came 2nd (6-4 out to 2-1) and Catspan 3rd.

Mens Open

A very competitive Mens Open and those at the head of the market came to the fore. Steeltown was sent clear of the field early on the final circuit but the gap was gradually closed by a few and Coombe Hill was the one who closed strongly after 2 out. He got to the front with a good jump at the last and the 14yo went on to win from Steeltown. Rosies Peacock, the 2-1 fav, ran well back in 3rd.

Open Maiden Div 1 Part 1

Div 1 of the maiden was split on the day. Part 1 looked a competitive race and produced a very tight finish between According To Harry and Swingbridge. The former, sent off at 4-1, just got the verdict from the 3-1 fav. The Mystro showed some promise in 3rd and should pick up a maiden.

Open Maiden Div 1 Part 2

Nortonthorpelegend’s price fluctuated around evens in Part 2 but he was in trouble early on the final circuit and could never get into the race. Victory went to Genermouse at 25-1 from Stony Road, who ran a promising race in 2nd, and Wivannie in 3rd.

Open Maiden Div 2

Carnage in Div 2 of the maiden. The favourite Loves Blind unseated early on. High Hatton (6-4 out to 4-1) had cruised into the lead when getting rid of James Tudor at the open ditch and the horse that followed him, Thegreendalerocket, unseated too. Very few of the 14 that set off were still going at the finish and it was Infamous Grouse that won to complete a treble for Darren Edwards. Morebutwhen and Gold Relief followed him home.

Intermediate

Visually the most impressive performance came in the last. Repeat Business (4s very early, then 5-2 into 7-4) travelled smoothly throughout and took up the running going across the top of the course. Little Cornham was the only danger at 2 out but Repeat Business quickly pulled clear, putting up a smart performance. Little Cornham was no match for the winner but ran well in 2nd and Argentato ran well in 3rd at 50-1. Supreme Danehill was the 6-4 favourite but could never get into a challenging position and ran below his best.

Good to see plenty of familiar local faces among the crowd and a few rare visitors to these parts.

Rhys Williams

Preview: Dulverton Farmers – Treborough Hill Sunday 9th March

THE Dulverton Farmers Point-to-Point takes place this coming weekend, Sunday 9th March, at the picturesque venue of Treborough Hill on Exmoor. To add to the scenic views, once again, organizers will be providing a huge screen for optimum viewing of the horses in action.

With 85 entries received for the seven race card, a great day of racing is in store. The opening Members race, sponsored by Yeo Barton Bloodstock, heads up the action at 12.30pm. This race could see the progressive five year old, Babeny Bridge, from the Jane Williams team, follow up on his recent second at Chipley Park and first at Buckfastleigh, he will have to contend with Deb’s Dasher, out of reigning area champion trainer Kayley Woollacott‘s yard, he won this race last season and goes well fresh.

In the Great Bradley Estate sponsored 2m4f Open Maiden, The Mythologist could be another winner for jockey Robbie Henderson, now trained by father Guy, the horse ran second in a Point-to-Point in Ireland in December on heavy ground.

The Ladies of the Chipstable & Dulverton Farmers Hunt sponsor the Confined, in which Checkerboard could give trainer/jockey Kayley Woollacott a season win, Dashing John could be the one to deny them, having run second here last season under jockey Natalie Parker.

Of the eleven entered in the Fallen Stock Company sponsored Mixed Open, the two Ed Walker horses look hard to oppose, Blazing Whale having recently clocked up two Point wins and a third in a Hunter Chase at Leicester, and Hameldown Tor looking to follow up on his three length second behind Ravethebrave at Badbury Rings. Another entry is the 14 year-old Gone To Lunch, having eight Point wins including a Coronation cup and eight National Hunt wins and two seconds in consecutive Scottish Nationals, he goes well fresh and could find his winning form here for trainer Camilla Scott.

Exeter Racecourse sponsor the Intermediate, in which the Jane Weston-trained Driftwood Pride could follow up on her recent win at Badbury Rings when coming home a length and a half ahead of joint favorite Overafrica. Ladfromhighworth was unlucky to unseat jockey Vicky Wade at Buckfastleigh, and his previous two seconds could see him take an Intermediate soon. Level Spirit is another from the Ed Walker yard having shown good form when staying on well to win at Black Forest Lodge so could atone here.

In the Restricted, sponsored by Tom Malone Bloodstock Agent, Thetalkinghorse trained by Keith Cumings, was eyecatching when winning his Maiden at Black Forest Lodge, coming home three lengths ahead of Bamboleo, and another from the Cumings team is Go On Henry who won his Maiden at Badbury Rings one and a half lengths ahead of Posh Totty. Miss Cupcake is also worth considering after her second at Badbury Rings behind Un Ami for trainer Les Jefford.

Finally the Open Maiden, sponsored by Winston Pincombe Landrover, suggestions would be Last Edition, who was unlucky under jockey Ed Barrett, to be denied a win at Badbury Rings, having been headed near finish, and Jossestown Lad who is an interesting entry, having scored a second at Black Forest Lodge two seasons ago and has been off the track since.

On course facilities include hot refreshments, bar, bookies and trade stands. Entrance £20 Car, £10 Car and Driver only,£8 Pedestrians.

Location on B3224, Wheddon Cross to Raleighs Cross Road – TA23 0QW

Preview : Mid Devon, Black Forest Lodge Sunday February 2

A great family day out is on offer at the Mid Devon Point-to-Point meeting at Black Forest Lodge, Kenton this Sunday February 2nd.

Pony racing heads up the action at 11 am, where young jockey’s get their first chance this season to experience racing on a proper track. Sponsored again by Mole Avon, there are two pony races before the main seven race card which starts at 12 noon. 128 entries have been received.

With the addition of AGA sponsoring the Ladies’ race, with the first three past the post qualifying for the £10,000, 3m4f, AGA Final Hunter Chase, at Stratford in May, there are no surprises that this race has attracted a quality field. Byerley Bear from the Robert Chanin team will be looking for his fourth consecutive win, having come home seven lengths ahead of Mobaasher here, and goes well for either lady jockey’s Jo Buck or Leanda Tickle. Another entry, Rowdy Rampage, from the David Brace Welsh raiders could be the one to deny Byerley Bear, with seven Point wins and two Chase wins to his credit, unless connections choose to run him in the Men’s Open.

Another feature race is the Men’s Open, sponsored by J Edwards Sellars, which is a qualifying race for the Bonham Mens Open race at Cheltenham in April. This race could go to Bobs Law , a previous 12 length winner of a Hunter Chase at Ffos Lass, ahead of second place Tricky Trickster, and also ran a good second at Barbury Castle last season, when two and a half lengths behind Cottage Oak. The Shelia Crow-trained mare Fruit Fayre has won six out of eight, including a win here last February when six lengths ahead of Molland Gayle.

The Confined race is sponsored by The Farriers. Blazing Whale has to be respected after his win at Chipley Park when he won the Intermediate for the Edward Walker team. Ned White won here in January and has been consistently placed for owner Jaquie Elliott and from the current area leading trainers yard Robert Chanin’s. Iron Chancellor from the Sue Popham yard is another that cannot be left out of the equation, after his distance win in the Confined at Wadebridge

With the Connolly’s Red Mills Intermediate being another Cheltenham qualifying race, the first four past the post will be
eligible to run in the Hunter Chase final in April, Paddycards under jockey Claire Hart ran well in third behind Blazing Whale at Chipley Park, having weakened approaching the last fence. The Lee Power-trained Waddington Hero is another showing decent form when second here behind Tachbury in December. Welstonedruid and Ladfromhighworth are two other suggestions that have run well at this course.

Tozers Solicitors have sponsored the Restricted race in which Un Ami was only just denied a win at Chipley Park when a short head behind Romassor two weeks ago and has to be a leading factor here. The Camilla Scott-trained Honours Insight had a comfortable win here early in January under 22 year old Steve Croft and the partnership look set to build on that performance.

Two divisions of the Open Maiden wrap up the days events. In the first division Village Whispers kept on well in second here at the early January meeting, when coming home one and a half lengths behind Best Bide Quiet, and Bamboleo came an eye catching second at Chipley Park three lengths behind Big George. This division is sponsored by The Old Thatch, Cheriton Bishop.

In the second division which is jointly sponsored by B.J. Barkwell & Sons and Lyndridge Care Residential, the Matthew Barber-trained Canshetrain was unfortunate when falling having lead on the final circuit at Cockleburrow, and The Gunner Brady ran well at Larkhill finishing two lengths behind Un Ami.

Course is located five miles south of Exeter, near the B3381 and is signposted from A380. Postcode EX6 8HR.

Trade stands, hot refreshments, bar and bookies are all on course.

Entrance £20 per car, £10 car and driver.
