Preview: Dartmoor Point-To-Point, Flete Park, Saturday 16th April 2016

Website_Preview_D16

Written by: Donna Harris

The first of two Point-to-Point’s to take place at the popular picnic track of Flete Park near Ermington this season takes place on Saturday 16th April. A fantastic day out is on offer with two pony races heading up the action which starts at 1pm these have been kindly sponsored by Flete Estate owner Anthony Mildmay-White. The main seven race card starts at 2pm and has attracted over 120 entries.

The opening Members race sponsored by A Salon Called Fish looks to be a battle between local jockey’s, many of which are pony racing graduates, these include Pippa Glanville riding four times course winner Ambitious Pursuit, Millie Wonnacott riding Coombe Hill a winner of eleven Points and six Hunter Chases , recent Cherrybrook winner Jennifer Davenport on Mic’s Delight, Bronwyn Buttery with Buckfastleigh winner Doctor Henry, Hannah Welch on the Charlie Stanley-owned Beuvron, and Thomasina Eyston with recent Great Trethew winner Ladyvie.

AGA-sponsor the four-mile Mixed Open race in which previous course winner Bellflower Boy‘s connections will be hoping he can stay the distance again having previously won at last years May meeting. Buck’s Bond has Chase form under rules when in training with champion trainer Paul Nicholls, and ran well for the Jack Barber team when second behind Delphi Mountain at Ston Eston. Imperial Circus is another with form under rules and is out of the Phillip Hobbs yard, now with the Mitford Slades at Pontispool, he had a win at Cothelstone last month and has shown some solid form this season.

Leading trainer Jack Barber has both Athreeothree who won his maiden at Charlton Hawthorne, and Ston Eston winner Rouge Devils who is partly owned by Sir Alex Ferguson entered in the Kitsons-sponsored Restricted race with the booking of jockey Will Biddick either entry will go close . The Keith Cumings team also looks double handed with Steel Brush and High Priority and will figure high in the betting ring out of the 19 entered.

Francis Clarke sponsor the first Open Maiden race for four, five and six year-olds, in which the Ed Walker-trained L’ane Fou having run second at this track last season and a recent runner up at Great Trethew, would look to be one of the bookies favorites out of the 24 entered. Ruby Fool from the Richard Mitford Slade team is another scoring a good runner up spot when a head second at Cothelstone under jockey Jamie Thomas, with Fishy Story from the Stuart Sampson team also being a suggestion having run well at Buckfastleigh on holding ground finishing fourth.

Rogers of Plymouth sponsor the Club Members race in which Ned The Post is to be considered having run a close second at Upton Upon Severn, and Turtle Tim from the Emma Pidsley team is another that could go close having run second recently to Champagne Rosie at Milborne St Andrew.

Delphi Mountain for trainer/jockey Emma Watson looks the pick of those entered in Elizabeth May Memorial Confined race, already on a seasons hat-trick of wins with the latest when staying on gamely to win at Ston Eston one and a half lengths ahead of Buck’s Bond. Whatastormnorm from the Robert Chanin team is another to note having recent wins at both Buckfastleigh and Great Trethew under jockey Tom Chanin, with the combination having traveled well here in the maiden race last season before falling at the last fence.

The final race of the day Tony Glynn Scaffolding-sponsored Open Maiden race in which those with recent runner up places who should figure are Gold Relief, L’ane Fou if not competing in the earlier maiden, Rainbow Stripes and Ruby Fool.

There will be a space hopper charity race at the end of the day, in aid of the Injured Jockeys Fund and to celebrate Amy Roberts’s hen party.

On course facilities include hot food and refreshments, bar, bookies, trade stands and track side viewing complimenting the fabulous atmosphere. Entrance to the course is £10 per person up to a maximum of £30 per car. Children under 16 go free. Dogs on leads welcome. Course is located at Flete Park near Ermington, nr Ivybridge Postcode PL21 9NX.

Going Update

Saturday, 20 February 2016

At 6pm, the Clerk of the Course gave me the following Going update. “The Going at Buckfastleigh is Soft, Heavy in Places.  The course is in great shape and with a dry forecast for tomorrow we are looking forward to a good day’s racing.”

Eileen Ashby, PtP Secretary, DVSPH

Friday, 19 February 2016

“At 3.15pm today, the Clerk of the Course reported that the Local BHA Course Inspector, Clare Wonnacott, had walked the course this afternoon and called the Going Soft, Heavy in Places. Some rain is forecast for tomorrow , Saturday, but importantly, it is a dry forecast for race day on Sunday.”

We are all geared up to race – track fully prepared, barrier netting now up, catering marquee up, race cards collected, toilets on site and the Admin Barn only awaiting the”feminine touch” from the lady “Dec. team” and me!. A few cosmetics on Saturday, bins, banners and flags and we are ready for action on Sunday. Wrap up warm and come join us!

Eileen Ashby, DVSPH PtP Secretary

Thursday, 18 February 2016

This evening, the Clerk of the Course reported to me that as of late afternoon today the Going at Buckfastleigh is Soft, Heavy in Places. The course has shrugged off yesterdays heavy rain and most of it would ride soft or better. Further rain is forecast for Friday and Local Course Inspector, Clare Wonnacott, is due to visit to walk the course. A further update will follow tomorrow evening.

Eileen Ashby, DVSPH PtP Secretary

Notified at 8.15pm, Wednesday 17 February 2016

“After a day of persistently heavy rainfall, the Going at Buckfastleigh is Heavy, Soft in Places. A mostly dry day is forecast for tomorrow and a further report will be posted tomorrow evening”.

Eileen Ashby, DVSPH PtP Secretary.

Tuesday 16th February 2016

Today has been another fine day at Buckfastleigh and work parties have been busy at the Course adding finishing touches to the track and converting the inside of the big Barn into the Admin. centre for the meeting.

The Clerk of the Course reported to me this evening the Going is now “Good to Soft, Soft and Heavy in Places“.  Car parking areas have dried very well and are now fit for all vehicles, there is ample hard standing for horse-boxes in the lorry park and all vehicles exit the course downhill via a hard track to the bottom gate.

Approximately 12 ml of rain is forecast for tomorrow with a further dry day on Thursday; another update will be posted tomorrow evening.

Eileen Ashby, DVSPH PtP Secretary

Monday 15th February 2016

“This afternoon the Clerk of the Course reported that after a
sunny, drying day the Going at Buckfastleigh is Soft, Heavy in Places.”

Ryan and his family are the essence of a pointing family having supported the sport locally for generations. Ryan himself rode as a 16-year-old but had a long break to further his career as a farrier. He shed 5 stones in order to continue riding in point-to-points in the last couple of years.

Riding pointers prepared by the family, and with only a handful of rides, he rode his first winner at Wadebridge in January, and rode a double on Easter Monday at his local Trebudannon track.

GRANVILLE’S BETTING GOSSIP – DULVERTON WEST POINT-TO-POINT AT BRATTON DOWN 17TH MAY 2015

Website_BD_DW_Money_Talks_Banner

The 88 runners at Bratton Down vastly overshadowed the number of runners at the other seven British point-to-point fixtures at the weekend (Clifton-On Teme could only muster a turn out of 24)

So the scene was set for plenty of betting activity and punters soon got down to action. It was surprising to see The Persuader backed from 8’s into 3-1 fav for the opener, presumably on the strength of his Stevenstone maiden win. He was soon struggling in the rear and the grey seemed ill at ease before Bryony Frost pulled him up at the 15th fence.  Nothing could stop record seeking Will Biddick, who would not be denied on course winner Bernshaw (9-2 touched 5’s), locally trained by Claire Hitch. Golden Squirrel (10-1) has been knocking at the door in this class recently and ran on really well to finish second.

There was a very tight finish to the first section of the Bob Pittard Memorial Maiden. Bob would have relished the result as Highland Thistle in first time blinkers became the longest price winner of the season in the area. His previous form figures of ppppp did not exactly inspire confidence and resulted in a 66-1 SP return. Nevertheless the sturdy chestnut won on merit and battled on gamely up the hill to hold the promising Looking For Mick (20s to 16’s) and the well fancied Barber debutant Drift Wood (6-4 to 5-4).

Bugsie Malone (5-4 to evens) retrieved £170 of his 80,000 euros purchase price in the second Maiden division after a spirited battle with The Mystro (9-2 touched 5’s). Biddick needed all of his guile to get Bugsie Malone home in front, but the Mahler youngster was very green and we can expect significant improvement.

Bellflower Boy was solid at 13-2 / 7-1 in the four miles Mixed Open. Bryony Frost timed her challenge to perfection, coming from fourth to first in a sweeping run up the hill to gain a head verdict over Cecile De Volanges (5-2 from 3’s). Both had good recent winning form over four miles. Connections have left the headgear off the winner in his recent races and this tough old campaigner can never be dismissed. Third placed Right Enough (16-1) seems to be running into form and might pick up a race before the end of the season.

Otis Tarda was given a vintage Biddick ride to win the Intermediate. Despite drifting out to 10-1 the winner cruised to the front on a tight rein approaching the final fence. He eventually held on by a neck in a driving finish with Fourstar River (4-1), after carrying his rival to the right inside the last 150 yards.

I thought that Queens Bay (Will Biddick) would be my bet of the day in the last race. Despite being absent from the track for nearly a year this classy mare opened at only 5-4 before closing in to evens. I cannot run fast enough these days so missed the cream of the odds. She won of course so well done Will Biddick – what a day.
