QUANTOCK STAGHOUNDS AT COTHELSTONE 2 MARCH

THE second successive blank weekend in the Devon & Cornwall area meant a trip to the neighbouring Wessex area for point-to-point action.

Cothelstone, near Taunton, hosted the Quantock Staghounds fixture on Sunday (2nd March) where a plethora of declared runners led to three races being split on the day. A total of 81 runners contested the ensuing nine races.

Darren Edwards described the going as, “heavy, soft along the home straight,” as rain poured down for the last four races. Darren was in good form with a double, initiated when Coombe Hill upset the odds laid on Kirkleigh in the Mixed Open.

Edwards completed his double when Reliable Richie stepped up on his recent Buckfastleigh second by running on too strongly for Gontdevon in the first Restricted.

Tom Chanin had to play second fiddle on both Kirkleigh and Gontdevon, but got himself on the score sheet thanks to pillar to post winner Five Journeys, saddled by his father Robert, in one of the two and a half mile Maidens for young horses. This took the Thorverton based trainer into double figures for the season.

The other Maiden for young horses went to the Exmoor qualified Twyford, trained by Claire Hitch and ridden by reigning Devon & Cornwall male title holder Josh Guerriero.

John Pearn’s Lightening Jack also holds an Exmoor certificate and the Kayley Woollacott trained gelding just overhauled Carrickmines in the hands of Jamie Thomas to win the Confined.

The fast improving Master Hooper battled on courageously to win the second Restricted at the expense of Honours Insight, staying on strongly for Matt Hampton for Butleigh owner Julie Purdie.

With the crowd and bookmakers dwindling in the face of the weather (only three bookies stayed the course until the last race), Will Biddick collected the final two events. Corton Ridge left some modest form behind him to beat the only other finisher Big Mick in the first section of the Open maiden, and Third Chance received a smooth Biddick ride to win the concluding event.

Wessex Preview

Part 1 Somerset & Devon border

Part 2 Dorset & the rest of the area

Tiverton, Chipley Park, Saturday 2nd February 2013 Report

AFTER three blank weekends in the Devon & Cornwall area, point-to-pointing resumed against a backcloth of wall to wall sunshine at Chipley Park.

A total of 72 runners contested the eight races on very testing going with all race times in excess of seven minutes.

The usual strong contingent at this meeting from Wales produced their normal quota of winners from across the Severn Bridge, with Nick Williams partnering two of them. My Fella initiated the Welsh jockey’s double in the Intermediate. This ten-year-old is owned and trained by Andrew Quick near Cardiff.

Pyle trainer Stephen Bevan sent out eight-year-old George Reid to claim the final Open Maiden under a strong Nick Williams ride in a tight finish. “He has been off the track for two years having broken down on both front legs,” explained the trainer.

The Kayley Jones trained Robin Will (JohnMathias) scored easily in the other Open Maiden division despite jumping violently left in the straight. The fastest Maiden race, which was unusually limited to sponsored horses only, went to 33-1 outsider One and All, nicely ridden by Tom Cheesman for Katherine Mead and reported by connections to be “on the market.”

Course winner Bleuvito (Jeremy Mahot) just held Special Occasion and Carrickmines in a blanket finish to the Mixed Open. Owner/trainer Stanley Turner said, “I will try to get him qualified for the (Cheltenham) Foxhunters. The further he goes the better he is.”

The grey Fountains Cloud looks a progressive sort. He is a half brother to prolific pointing winner Chesnut Annie and revelled in the ground conditions to win the Restricted under Leanda Tickle. “I didn’t think he was fit enough, the last time I galloped him he blew up,” reported owner/trainer David Stephens.

Tired horses produce a slow motion finish to the Novice Riders’ event in which the former grade two winner under rules Nycteos gave his rider Susannah Andrew her second career success at the expense of Fiulin and Oakfield Legend. “He was trained by Paul Nicholls under rules and was given to me by Andy Stewart. He is a most game horse,” exclaimed the delighted rider who produces young horses for the polo field at Shepton Mallet.

Another young lady rider with something to celebrate was Eleri Apps who works in the David Pipe yard and landed her first winner on Turthen in the Hunt race. Now 12-years-old, Turthen was runner up in the Cheltenham Foxhunter four years ago and is trained by Eleri’s father Jonathan near to Chipley Park at Westleigh “We acquired him from Charlie Fox as a schoolmaster two years ago. He had a leg and has been fired, but we have hunted him well this year. He has worn out more shoes than Imelda Marcos,” quipped the trainer.

Tiverton, Chipley Park Preview

The popular course of Chipley Park near Wellington, Somerset is the location for this weekend’s rearranged Devon & Cornwall Area Point-to-Point racing on Saturday February 2nd. With a bumper total of over 150 entries, many horses have been ready for a run however with the recent wet spell resulting in several meetings being cancelled we could be in for some exciting action, seeing the Devon & Cornwall area horses fending off the outside raiders.

The Stags Hunt Members race heads up the action at 12 noon and of the entries the Mary Sanderson trained Blinding Lights won this race last season when sent off the 5-2 favorite for jockey Keiren Edgar. Turthen is a previous treble Ladies Open winner when ridden by Charlotte Tizzard and could find old form to challenge.

Next up is the Maiden Conditions race for sponsored horses only, and of the 12 entered the Sarah McQueen trained Abo Dreamer had a run in December at Chaddesley Corbett, running a promising second.

The Mixed Open carries a total prize fund of five hundred and fifty pounds and no surprises that it contains a classy field of 21 entries, The Connolly’s Red Mills Intermediate Final winner Doctor Kingsley, ridden by Pete Mann, has eight Points to his credit and finished the season getting up to beat Books Review by one and a half lengths at Cheltenham. Books Review, a previous course winner here, seemed to lose his way after that defeat and may have needed the break. Carrickmines, trained by George Belby, is another interesting entry on his pointing debut having won six chases and two hurdle races.

The Intermediate is sponsored by Exeter Racecourse. All runners qualify for the 3m Exeter Racecourse Intermediate Point-to-Point Series Final Hunter Chase on Tuesday May 7. This race could see Indiana Bay take the spoils for trainer Jill Dennis; he is on a hat-trick having destroyed an eight runner field at Upcott Cross giving Josh Guerriero a 25 length win and would relish the drying ground.

Following on is the Dodson & Horrell PPORA Club Members race for novice riders; the Richard Barber trained course specialist Barneys Mate won this race last year for Conor Smith and may have needed the run when beaten evens favourite at Barbury Castle recently when coming in fifth, Oakfield Legend had to settle for second behind Timeshift at Black Forest Lodge in December while Just Amazing will need to find decent brakes on the downhill back straight having run out at Wadebridge.

Next up is the Restricted and of the 26 entries the Andrew Pollard trained Little Cornham only just missed out on a win at Larkhill for Darren Edwards when the Will Biddick ridden Mendip Express outpaced him in the final 100 yards.

The Open Maiden wraps up the day’s racing and the entries have already been divided with 26 in each division, the bookies will have their skills tested choosing the favorites of these.

The course is situated 3 miles NE of Wellington on the B3187. Postcode TA21 OQU. Entry to the course is £20 per car load or £10 per car and single driver. On course bar, bookies, hot refreshments and trade stands are on offer.

Mid Devon, Black Forest Lodge Preview

A cracking day’s racing is on the cards at Black Forest Lodge on Sunday February 3rd, with two pony races kicking off the card at 11am.

The main race card follows on at 12 noon with the Confined and entered is the Ed Walker-trained Hameldown Tor, an Intermediate winner in a particularly fast time at Cherrybrook. Also entered is Googoobarabajagal and his trainer John Heard will be looking for an early hat trick after his brace of wins at Wadebridge this season.

In the Men’s Open entries include Carrickmines, a decent performer under Rules for Dr Richard Newland. He’s now with George Beilby yard near Taunton. Bobs Law and Silver Story have solid claims having run well in heavy and the John Heard-trained Faasel could again take on Robert Chanin’s impressive gelding Kirkleigh, the two having met recently at Wadebridge where Faasel got up to win by three quarters of a length.

In the AGA Ladies’ Open the Steve Flook-trained Island Life came second here last year to Special Occasion and then went on to take Hunter Chases at Warwick and Hereford before unseating his rider when going well at Aintree; Mobaasher has won six including three 3m chases and has had the benefit of a couple of early runs at Wadebridge.

The Connolly’s Red Mills Intermediate race follows on and the Jelly O’Brien-trained Hall Kelly looks to have a chance having run well at Ampton in January finishing five lengths behind French Canadian. Molland Gayle won a Restricted here in December for jockey Ian Chanin and Leslie Jefford’s Delta Borget is another course winner here and should not be dismissed.

The Restricted could see the David Brace outside raider Bringinthebranston take the spoils having relished the heavy going at Chaddesley Corbett destroying his field by 30 lengths.

The Open Maiden has already been divided with 23 in each division. These races have been sponsored by Gidleigh Park Hotel, Hi-Line Services Ltd and Kennford Tramacadam Ltd.

Black Forest Lodge is located at Kenton, near Exeter off the A380; postcode EX6 8HR. On course facilities include bar, bookies and hot refreshments. Entry is £20 per car and £10 for single occupancy.
