REPORT: FOUR BURROW POINT-TO-POINT AT TREBUDANNON, EASTER MONDAY 21ST APRIL

IT was a good day for the lady jockeys at the Four Burrow, where Bryony Frost and Vicky Wade each scored doubles. In addition, Leanda Tickle rode Byerley Bear to win the Ladies Open, which left only a couple of races for the boys.

Wee Fly initiated Bryony’s double when quickening clear on the run-in to win the Hunt race. “This is my 50th win as an owner,” said Wee Fly’s trainer Ross Oliver whose yard is within sight of the Trebudannon course. Ross has also dominated this Four Burrow Hunt race over the past ten years.

Bryony completed her double on the improving Red Penny in the Confined. The Nikki Frost trained mare was following up her Buckfastleigh win after a spirited battle with Print the Money and King Cyrus. Bryony is now on the eight winner mark for the season and well on course to retain her Devon & Cornwall Lady jockeys title.

What About Will provided Vicky Wade with the first leg of her double in the two and a half miles Maiden, mastering Queen’s Law at the final jump. A sturdy five-year-old, What About Will was saddled by Neil Harris for Vicky’s father Keith. “We got him at Goffs in Ireland as a three-year-old, sold him, then bought him back. He is a late foal and will mature further,” said the trainer.

Vicky Wade completed her double in the three miles Maiden on Just Seven. This big, strong gelding stayed on well in the home straight to score for owner/trainer Roy Smith who bought the chestnut as a four-year-old. He is a three parts brother to King of Alcatraz who has won five races in the same colours.

The Ladies’ Open looked a formality for 1-3 favourite Byerley Bear. This useful gelding, bidding to score for the sixth time this season, nevertheless had to put his best foot forward under Leanda Tickle to see off a determined challenge by Bryony Frost on Classic Swain. “That was a relief. He was quite tired that day at Great Trethew (where he finished third).” said trainer Robert Chanin

Favourite backers came unstuck however when the odds-on chance Shalimar Fromentro was overhauled by Reliable Richie on the run-in for the grandly titled Cornish National. The four-runner field was reduced to three when the leader Ace High fell at the 10th fence.. Shalimar Fromentro was left in front for the remainder of the three and a half miles journey, but got tired and idled badly after crossing the last fence to be collared by the well named Reliable Richie in the last 75 yards. The eight-year-old winner proved a popular local success for owner/ trainer Reuben Chapman and was giving jockey Michael Heard his seventh winner of the season. “We bought him cheaply out of the ring at Ascot. He likes his work and we have his five-year-old half brother at home,” explained Reuben’s son Ryan.

A field of 14 faced the starter for the Restricted and all but two completed the course. The winner Devon General seemed to travel like a dream on the final circuit and prevailed in a three way finish over Mausefalle and Gontdevon. “I couldn’t believe how well he was travelling,” enthused winning jockey Jake Bament, who had celebrated his 18th birthday on Good Friday and was enjoying his second point-to-point success having graduated through pony racing. “This horse has been difficult to train. He is really a big baby but has a turn of foot,” reported Kayley Woollacott, who handles the six-year-old for joint owners Dick Westacott, Ruth and John Burrow.

MONEY TALKS

Red Penny was given a patient ride by Bryony Frost to land the Confined. This seven-year-old mare was backed from 5-2 to 2’s and took advantage of her weight concession from runner up Print The Money (3-1). The winner is likely to be seen out from the Frost yard under rules this summer.

What About Will was a heavily backed favourite (7-4 into evens), in the two and a half miles maiden. He is a sturdy five-year-old who is just coming to hand and overhauled long time leader Queen’s Law (5-1) in the closing stages. What About Will should be even better over a longer distance and can win a Restricted before the end of the season.

Punters came unstuck in the three miles maiden when Boymann (7-2 into 5-2 favourite) could not get in a blow in the 12-runner field. His promising Kilworthy run was on softer ground and he deserves another chance. This race went to Just Seven who drifted out to 9-1 and gained reward for his consistency.

Theatre Goer was a disappointing favourite in the 14-runner Restricted after her eye catching Great Trethew win. She looked to be outpaced on this sharper track. Devon General was easy to back at 8-1 but showed a good turn of foot under young Jake Bament and can score again.
