QUANTOCK STAGHOUNDS AT COTHELSTONE 2 MARCH

THE second successive blank weekend in the Devon & Cornwall area meant a trip to the neighbouring Wessex area for point-to-point action.

Cothelstone, near Taunton, hosted the Quantock Staghounds fixture on Sunday (2nd March) where a plethora of declared runners led to three races being split on the day. A total of 81 runners contested the ensuing nine races.

Darren Edwards described the going as, “heavy, soft along the home straight,” as rain poured down for the last four races. Darren was in good form with a double, initiated when Coombe Hill upset the odds laid on Kirkleigh in the Mixed Open.

Edwards completed his double when Reliable Richie stepped up on his recent Buckfastleigh second by running on too strongly for Gontdevon in the first Restricted.

Tom Chanin had to play second fiddle on both Kirkleigh and Gontdevon, but got himself on the score sheet thanks to pillar to post winner Five Journeys, saddled by his father Robert, in one of the two and a half mile Maidens for young horses. This took the Thorverton based trainer into double figures for the season.

The other Maiden for young horses went to the Exmoor qualified Twyford, trained by Claire Hitch and ridden by reigning Devon & Cornwall male title holder Josh Guerriero.

John Pearn’s Lightening Jack also holds an Exmoor certificate and the Kayley Woollacott trained gelding just overhauled Carrickmines in the hands of Jamie Thomas to win the Confined.

The fast improving Master Hooper battled on courageously to win the second Restricted at the expense of Honours Insight, staying on strongly for Matt Hampton for Butleigh owner Julie Purdie.

With the crowd and bookmakers dwindling in the face of the weather (only three bookies stayed the course until the last race), Will Biddick collected the final two events. Corton Ridge left some modest form behind him to beat the only other finisher Big Mick in the first section of the Open maiden, and Third Chance received a smooth Biddick ride to win the concluding event.

Preview: Western Point-to-Point, Wadebridge, Saturday 8 February 2014 – POSTPONED

NOTE: DUE TO WATERLOGGING THE WESTERN POINT-TO-POINT AT WADEBRIDGE, ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY 8TH FEBRUARY 2014 HAS BEEN POSTPONED.
BYERLEY Bear for owner Roger Knowles, will be looking to make it five out of five wins this Saturday, at the Western Point-to-Point meeting The Royal Cornwall Showground, Wadebridge, February 8th. Having won his fourth consecutive win this season at last weekends meeting held at Black Forest Lodge, Byerley Bear is entered in the AGA Ladies Open race here. The race is a qualifier for the AGA National championship, there are several quality horses entered which will be ridden by some of the country’s top lady jockey’s. The challengers could be Double Mead from the Alexandra Dunn yard, having only been beaten once last season when second to Mid Div And Creep, and having wins in double figures this 12 year old mare looks a likely contender. Silverburn is another with strong claims, this gelding is full brother to Denman, and was himself not far off top class in his prime, winning Grade 1 races at Sandown.
With six races on the card, the Confined race sponsored by The Green Waste Company, heads up the days event with a start time of 12 noon. Great Gusto joined Nikki Frost’s yard this summer and has previously won a hurdle race under rules, he should go well for Bryony Frost who rides him out daily. Transact is another with form under rules and Clew Bay Cove has previous wins on soft/heavy ground and could put in a solid performance.
Exeter Racecourse sponsor the Intermediate, Sobre Tresor won the Novice Riders race here in January under jockey Taylor Pook, and followed that up with a fourth at Chipley Park then ridden by Josh Newman, having led until approaching three out. Ailanthus from the Kayley Woollacott team started her career with a few quirky errors ,but made amends at Little Windsor when taking the Restricted, staying on well under Robbie Henderson. Another to consider is the David Brace-trained Direct Line, having been in the frame on all six point starts in UK, but has been off the course for 18 months.
The Open Maiden is sponsored by Savills (Cornwall), in which the Charlotte Davis-trained Corton Ridge ran third at Chipley Park under Will Biddick and would look to improve for that run.
Mr & Mrs Peter George sponsor the Mens Open race in which trainer Ed Walker has two entered. Blazing Whale won first time out at Chipley Park, in a 16-runner Intermediate in the hands of Robbie Henderson. Hameldown Tor  from the same yard also ridden by Henderson, was third at the same meeting behind winner Certain Flight, it will be interesting to see which horse Henderson gets the leg-up on. Googoobarabajagal fought gallantly to win the Mens Open for jockey Michael Heard and will looking to repeat that performance. Will Biddick could get the ride on Champagne Rosie if not having prior engagements at Larkhill.
The Restricted race closes the days events and is sponsored by Stimson & Tieken, in which Whenharrymetsally from the Keith Cuming’s yard ran second under Will Biddick at Chipley Park, the combination was unlucky to be caught in the final 50 yards finishing three quarters of a length behind Illicit Illusion. Brackenwood could follow up on his second here behind Lightening Jack in January for jockey Bryony Frost.
This is an ideal venue for winter racing, with convenient viewing locations. There are tarmac access roads to car parks. Bar, bookmakers, trade stands and hot refreshments are all under cover in the exhibition hall.
Entry is £10 car and driver, £5 per passenger and children under 16 free.
Course is located off A39 west of Wadebridge. Post code PL27 7JE.
