Preview: Exmoor Point-to-Point Bratton Down, Sunday 31st May 2015

Website_BD_E_Preview_Banner
Written by: Donna Harris

The stunning location of Bratton Down is the location for this weekends Point-to-Point, where the Exmoor Foxhounds hold their fixture this Sunday May 31st. A fabulous day is on offer for all the family, with pony racing heading up the action at 1pm includes two pony races which are sponsored by Teapes Tyres. The main six race card follows at 2pm, over 100 entries having been received.

Bray Leino sponsor the Ladies Open race, and Moore Scarrott Accountants sponsor the Men’s Open, which look to be the feature races of the day. Local trainer Claire Hitch could snatch the Ladies race with Minella Fifty, having won at Milborne St Andrew under jockey Charlotte Prichard when sent off favourite that day. Top Chief from the Stuart Sampson team, also holds strong claims having won the Members race here two weeks ago under jockey Jake Bament. In the Men’s Open Whataknight won here under champion jockey Will Biddick for the Jack Barber team. The equally rated Parkham Jack also holds an entry in the Stratford Hunter Chase evening this Friday, but could go close if the Woollacott team choose to run him here. Level Spirit from the Ed Walker team clocked up wins at both Flete meetings and a second at Holnicote, and Little Cornham with his wins at Badbury and Cothelstone from the Keith Cumings team, are two other suggestions that catch the eye.

Trainer Claire Hitch holds three strong entries in the opening Members race, sponsored by RSM Beares & B Thornes & Sons Agric, including Bernshaw, a winner here at the first meeting who gave Will Biddick his record breaking season run of winners. I’m All Set is another possible runner from the Hitch yard who could go well having already clocked up a seasons hat-trick, including the Intermediate race at Trebudannon. The Mystro from the Keith Cumings team ran well in the Maiden here at the last meeting, when a neck second behind Bugsie Malone could give another strong challenge.

The Rosettes Direct-sponsored Restricted race could go the way of the Joe Tickle-trained Templestateforesco to follow up on his neck second at Vauterhill. The Flying Doc from the Ed Walker team could be another to note having shown some good form when winning at Didmarton.

The lightly raced Credit Crunched could figure in the Intermediate race to follow on from his four length second at Whitfield in March, What About Will was unlucky to finish a neck second in a small field at Larkhill and should go close. This race is sponsored by Ashley Farrant and the Kingdon family in memory of Donna Kingdon.

It is likely that the Open maiden race will be divided on the day with 30 entered. Suggestions could be Looking For Mick who ran a promising second here at the last meeting, and Kit Hill from the Jackie du Plessis team ran well at Flete Park when second, having led until headed by winner Nudge The Nugget in the final 50 yards. The maiden races, if divided, will be sponsored by The Old Station House Inn and Slee Blackwell Solicitors.

Along with racing, on course facilities include hot refreshments, bar, bookies and a host of trade stands. Entrance to the course is £10 car & driver, £10 per passenger up to a max of £30 per car. Pedestrians £10 with children under 16 free.

The course is located at Bratton Fleming, 9m NE of Barnstaple on A399, 11m N of South Molton EX31 4SG

Preview: Four Burrow Point-to-Point, Trebudannon, Sunday 10th May 2015

Written by: Donna Harris

THE Four Burrow stage their Point-to-Point horse race meeting at the popular course of Trebudannon, nr St Columb Major, this Sunday May 10. There are seven races on offer, attracting over 100 entries.

The Stephens & Scown-sponsored Maiden race for horses and geldings heads up the action at 2pm. Entry Turnstone from the Dean Summersby team clocked up a second at Great Trethew, but was then unlucky to fall when leading the field at Upcott Cross. Road To Success is another entry having been unlucky, having scored a second at Cothelstone, then unseating his rider Ben Clarke at Littlewindsor. Driftwood looks an interesting entry from the Jack Barber team, who have a good strike rate with maidens at this track.

In the PPORA club Members race, Steeltown won this race last season, and could well follow up on his recent win at Cotley under Jamie Thomas. Also entered is Blazing Whale from the Ed Walker team, having won the Westcountry Champion Chase at Buckfastleigh should be respected, and has had enough time to recover from his poor run at Great Trethew, when he was pulled up that day, having been sent off favourite.

Local trainer Reuben Chapman scored a treble here at the last meeting, and his entry in the Jockey Club Mares Maiden race Onwegoagain could give him another winner after her second behind Annwyl at Upcott Cross. The Matt Griffiths-trained She’s Dapper could be the main challengers, after her second at Buckfastleigh under jockey Darren Edwards, who last weekend clocked up his 200th winner in Point-to-Points.

Carrs sponsor the Mixed Open in which trainer Jack Barber holds two strong entries, Benedictus was on a hat-trick of wins this season before being held into third in the Lady Dudley Cup at Chaddesley Corbett. That being over a month ago, and if back in form he should score here. Barber’s other option Posh Totty also holds strong claims, she is a winner of six Points including open contests. Academy General won a Ladies Open under Jo Buck at Littlewindsor for trainer Pat Shaw, when getting up by half a length to beat John Daniell, on that form he could be the main challenger here.

According To Harry, Mausefalle and What About Will were entered in the Exeter Intermediate race earlier this week, leaving I’m All Set from the Claire Hitch team as a suggestion in the C & J Perkins-sponsored Intermediate race here. He was a two length winner of his Restricted race at the last meeting and looks the pick of the remaining seven entries.

Tremaine Plant Hire sponsor the Restricted race, in which Doyen Dynamo from the Ed Walker team, looks to be a progressive type having won his maiden at Kilworthy, followed by a one length second to Siege Of Troy at Kingston St Mary. Jackie du Plessis holds an entry with Caillech Annie who is another progressive type, having won her maiden at Great Trethew was then unlucky to fall at Upcott Cross when travelling well, under jockey David Noonan.

Wrapping up the days event is the R & J Trevarthen-sponsored Open Maiden race in which Bugsie Malone and The Conjurer catch the eye.

On course facilities include large covered barn containing, bookies, bar, hot food and refreshments. Entrance to course is £10 per person to maximum of £30 per car load. Children under 16 free.

Course is located at St Columb Major, signed off A30 & A39. Postcode TR9 4LP
