GRANVILLE’S BETTING GOSSIP – DARTMOOR POINT-TO-POINT AT FLETE PARK 18th April 2015

Website_DFP_Money_Talks_Banner
THE BOOKIES came off best at a packed Flete Park where the organisers achieved a total of 67 runners thanks to substantial watering.

Only two favourites out of eight managed to score and any punters with any cash left must have found it hard to find 12-1 and 10-1 winners of the last two races.

Before The War (2-5 to 4-11 fav) set the tone for the afternoon when succumbing to the late thrust of the locally trained Ambitious Pursuit (easy to back at 3-1 and 7-2) in the opener.

Le Clo De La Londe (9-4 fav) has failed to reproduce his early season form recently and could only finish fifth behind his stable companion Pasternak Jack (8’s to 10’s) in the Restricted. Indian Dancer (5‘s to 4’s) and Trumpet Major (7-2 to 3’s) also proved disappointing behind the easy winner.

One or two skirmishers had evens about Hameldown Tor in the featured four miles race. Robbie Henderson’s mount never looked in danger of defeat after being backed in to 4-7 fav .

Henderson gave an equally confident ride to Level Spirit (7-4 out to 5-2) to secure his double in the Confined where the late plunge on course winner Right Enough (5-2 to 2-1 fav) went astray.

Knight Pass started his career by beating subsequently top class Sire De Grugy in a bumper, but has lost time through injury since a quartet of successes under rules. Now with Nikki Frost, he has gradually found his form this season, and made all here to win the Conditions event at 2-1 fav. Probably the best value bet of the day.

I missed the 6-1 early offer about Applesolutely in the DBS young horse qualifier. She traded as little as 7-2 and 3’s at the off. Having noted her debut promise at Great Trethew last month that was probably still a backable price and I am still kicking myself.

A crystal ball would have been handy to search for the last two winners: Sedgemoor Top Bid looked the part but had little to commend him on the form book and his 12-1 SP seemed a bit skinny. He just got up to beat Follow The Plan (7-2 to 4’s) in the last few strides

Nudge The Nugget has had plenty of chances between the flags and his 10-1 SP in the second part of the Open maiden was the second leg of a 121-1 double for his rider Heidi Lewis.

REPORT ON THE DARTMOOR POINT TO POINT AT FLETE PARK, SATURDAY 18TH APRIL

Website_DFP_Report_Banner
by GRANVILLE TAYLOR AND DONNA HARRIS

A strong wind kept the marquees flapping and the temperatures down at Flete Park, but the capacity crowd warmed to some exciting racing and close finishes.

A background of pony racing proved its value as four of the eight races went to horses ridden by teenagers who had emerged from the local pony racing circuit.

Pride of place goes to 18 year old Heidi Lewis who not only enjoyed her first pointing success on Pasternak Jack, but went on to secure a double thanks to her family owned Nudge The Nugget in one of the Maiden divisions.

Heidi made all the running on Pasternak Jack to win the Restricted in the familiar colours of Dick Westacott. The winner is trained by Kayley Woollacott who said, “It was great for Heidi who works full time for us. Mr Westacott has not been well but is here today. Pasternak Jack is very capable but very quirky but he won his Maiden here and loves the track.”

Heidi completed her double with a hard fought success on Nudge The Nugget in a blanket finish to the concluding Maiden. The sturdy seven-year-old just got up to beat Kit Hill with Rainbow Stripes a fast finishing third. The winner was bought by Heidi’s parents David and Maria Lewis last summer and is trained by her mother. “He is not an easy ride but stays well and it was brilliant for Heidi,” said Maria.

Pippa Glanville, also aged 18, followed up her first two wins at her local track last year with a short head Hunt Race success on Ambitious Pursuit. Pippa’s mother Lee trains the gelding and explained, “I was disappointed with his run on Tuesday at Exeter, but hunter chasing is a bit different. He was about to be turned out but we are only ten minutes away and decided to bring him at the last minute.” The winner was given a good ride by his young jockey. She kept her cool when Robbie Henderson issued a strong challenge on hot favourite Before The War, and did well to snatch the verdict on the line.

Bryony Frost has had plenty of race-riding experience since her very successful pony racing days. Currently the reigning Devon & Cornwall lady jockeys’ title holder, Bryony made all the running to win the Conditions event on Malcolm Denmark’s Knight Pass. Trainer Nikki Frost said of this four times winner under rules, “He has been with us for six months and has been working well. He had a broken elbow fixed a couple of years ago and is a lovely, kind horse.”

Robbie Henderson, the leading male rider in the area last year, helped himself to a double with Hameldown Tor and Level Spirit. The pair are owned by The Otter Club and trained by Ed Walker. “It is our first double as owners,” commented Club spokesman Ken Edwards. “The ground came right for us and the course has been beautifully prepared.” he added. Hameldown Tor was given a perfect ride, creeping through to lead at the top of the hill before staying on to win easing up.

After Level Spirit had defied a penalty in good style in the Confined, Robbie spared a thought for fellow rider Ed Barrett, who was seriously injured in a fall at Upcott Cross last weekend. No doubt including his colleagues, he said, “Our thoughts are with Ed every morning.”

In a close finish to the first division of the Maiden, the luckless Follow The Paint was just denied by the late thrust of Sedgemoor Top Bid. Jamie Thomas is riding at the top of his form at present and conjured a renewed effort from this seven-year-old to get up near the post. Joe Tickle, who trains the winner for Danny Kenealy said, “He has been running well with no luck until now. The sunshine and good ground has helped.”

A field of 13 lined up for the two and a half miles Maiden for young horses which was won in good style by Applesolutely. Sean Houlihan was partnering his third winner of the season on this four-year old filly who looks a nice prospect for her owners Lucy Fielding-Johnson and Ces Mitford-Slade.

Preview: Dartmoor Point to Point – Flete Park, Saturday, 18 April 2015

Website_DFP_Preview_Banner
Written by: Donna Harris

The first of two Point-to-Point horse racing fixtures takes place next Saturday 18th April at the glorious course of Flete Park Ermington. The Dartmoor will be hosting the days event, which is one of the most popular venues for enjoying the thrills and spills of racing for all the family. Pony racing heads up the action at 1pm with the 138cm and 148cm races, followed by the main seven race card at 2pm.The popular charity Clydesdale race will run at the end of the afternoon.

With the weather forecast looking good, picnics will be brimming, and the atmosphere electric. With over 100 entries received, the feature race looks to be the Mixed Open race, run over four miles, for the Lord Mildmay Memorial Challenge Cup. Sponsored by Totnes & Bridgetown, entries in this include Kingswood, a winner here last year for the Henderson family. His main challenger looks to be Hameldown Tor, the prolific winning gelding from the Ed Walker yard, he stays four miles, prefers the drier ground, and is seeking his hat-trick of wins this season.

Sally Goodman sponsors the opening Members race, in which Before The War should run well, having won twice on this track. Locally trained Brandy And Red could go well for trainer David Roger, having recently run second at Great Trethew under Pippa Glanville.

In the Kitson Solicitors-sponsored Restricted race, Steel Brush from the Keith Cumings team, has to be fancied having made all to win his maiden at Kingston St Mary, he had previously come home second to Doyen Dynamo at Kilworthy. Leo Clo De La Londe could follow up on his second at Cherrybrook, and Molly Oscar is another to note having run well until slipping up at Cherrybrook.

High Priority, another from the Keith Cumings yard, ran third at this course last season, and could run well again here in the Francis Clarke-sponsored Open Maiden two mile four furlong race, he was unlucky to be disqualified when finishing second to Judge John Deed at Kingston St Mary. Applesolutely is another to have been knocking at the door of a win, when finishing two lengths second at Great Trethew, under talented young jockey Sean Houlihan.

Rogers of Plymouth sponsor the Members Condition race, in which locally trained Sunken Secret is a previous course winner here, he would relish the drying ground for young jockey Pippa Glanville. The veteran Duxy Hill Lady could put up a good run, as could previous hurdle winner Knight Pass for the Frost team.

In the Elizabeth Maye Memorial Confined race, Right Enough won at both last years Flete meetings, he is lightly raced this season and was running well when finishing third at Cherrybrook. Swansbrook has also scored twice at this track and has finished in the frame on three of his four outings so far this season, and could figure here again.

The Open Maiden race is sponsored by Tony Glynn Scaffolding, this has attracted 28 entries and may well be divided on the day. Suggestions would be Follow The Paint, Miss Weld, My Rosie B and Spendajennie.

On course facilities include many trade stands, bar, bookies, hot and cold refreshments, hillside parking providng excellent viewing of the racetrack.

Entrance to course is £10 car & driver, £20 car and passengers. Course is located at Ermington, nr Ivybridge, PL21 9NX

Preview: Four Burrow Point-To-Point, Trebudannon, nr St. Columb Major, Easter Monday, 6th April 2015

Website_FB1_Preview_Banner
Written by Donna Harris
The second of the Point-to-Point meetings over the Easter weekend takes place at Trebudannon, where it is the turn of the Fourburrow to host their event on Bank Holiday Monday April 6, start time 1pm. This course is popular with its natural amphitheatre style providing fantastic viewing. They have eight races on offer including the Bonhams Cornish National Men’s Open race, attracting entries such as Chapoturgeon from the Jack Barber team who was a National Hunt Festival winner. Posh Totty from the same yard is another entry bang in form, having been in the frame on all 12 of her last starts. The prolific winning mare Lucette Annie is also entered, as is Bradley Brook, both hold strong claims if not running at Cherrybrook on Saturday.

The Members race, sponsored by A.G.Prowse heads up the action. Previous course winner Reliable Richie is the pick of the three Reuben Chapman entries, who could improve on his third behind Silver Token and Mic’s Delight at Buckfastleigh.

The Open Maiden has already been divided, Miss Weld ran second here last season, she loves the soft and goes well for young jockey Pippa Glanville. Boyman is another entry with a previous second at this course under jockey Conor Smith.

In the second division of the Open Maiden, Ryalzaro trained by Jack Barber, ran close at Larkhill in January finishing second under Will Biddick. Mount Prospex for the Jill Dennis team would be the one to fear if connections choose this race over Cherrybrook entry, after his head second at Kilworthy.

Mic’s Delight could put claims on the Truro Tractors-sponsored Confined race, having been in the frame on all of his starts this season for owner/trainer/jockey Jennifer Davenport. He loves the soft, likes to keep his head in front as he showed when winning at Ottery. Knight Pass for the Nikki Frost yard and Devon General for Kayley Woollacott could be the ones to chase him home.

The Ladies Open race is sponsored by Carrs Landrover Truro, in which Minella Fifty could score again here after his recent win at Milborne St Andrew, when sent off odds on favourite, for the Claire Hitch team. Sweet My Lord connections will be looking for a hat-trick after his two wins at Wadebridge, and was running well at Kilworthy until falling.

The Restricted race is a qualifier for the Subaru Restricted Point-to-Point series final to be held at Stratford racecourse on Friday 29th May,  in which entries include On Your Max, who has been knocking at the door for a Restricted win. Templeton was only just denied a win under Jamie Thomas when caught in the final 150 yards by winner Sonoftheking. Im All Set, from the Claire Hitch yard, who won his Maiden at Ston Easton at the second time of asking under Will Biddick. This race is sponsored by Tremaine Plant Hire.

Lamanva Brood Mares sponsor the three mile Open Maiden race, Judge John Deed could make his debut Point run here for the Barber family, who have a good strike rate with maiden horses at this course. Arny and Up To Ollie both ran well at the Kilworthy meeting and should improve for the run.

The course at Trebudannon is located at St Columb Major, signed off A30 and A39. Postcode TR9 4LP. Entrance to the course is £10 per person to a max of £30 per car. Children under 16 free. On course facilities include bar, bookies, trade stands and hot refreshments.

REPORT ON THE EAST CORNWALL POINT TO POINT AT GREAT TRETHEW SUNDAY 8TH MARCH 2015

Website_EC1_Report_Banner

STEADY rain during the morning meant soft ground and testing conditions at Great Trethew for the East Cornwall fixture postponed from a fortnight ago.

The sun eventually came out and it proved a busy afternoon for jockey Darren Edwards who continues to lead the table in his quest for the Devon & Cornwall riders’ title.

The Wheddon Cross jockey took the Mixed Open on Bradley Brook after the useful chestnut had seized the initiative on the tight bend at the top of the hill. The race looked in safe keeping as this evens favourite strode clear down the hill, but his backers must have held their breath as he ran down the last fence. Explaining the slight blip his successful jockey reported that, “he had it well in hand and show jumped the last.” Trainer Nicky Martin. looking tanned on return from holiday said “Bradley Brook had stem cell treatment three years ago and we have to be careful about his ground. He went hunting yesterday like my other runners today. He will probably go to Chepstow next for a hunter chase.”

Wadebridge winner Sonoftheking represented the same connections (Nicky Martin is also an integral part of the owning Bradley Partnership) in the Restricted. This seven-year-old had to give best however to Way Before Dawn in a slow motion finish. The pair were locked in battle all the way down the hill and it was only in the last few strides that Leanda Tickle forced Way Before Dawn ahead.

Darren Edwards again had to settle for the runner-up spot when newcomer Turnstone just failed to peg back Only Gorgeous (Jo Buck) in the Open Maiden which had to be divided on the day. The winner is owned and trained by Lucy Gardner who explained, “We got him from Ireland last summer He is really straightforward but had lost his confidence after a fall in Ireland. He will go to Doncaster sales.”

Jo Buck just missed out on a double as Bold Perk was just outstayed by Lucius Fabeo ( who had beaten Only Gorgeous at Wadebridge) in the Hunt race. Olivia Hutchings was achieving her third career winner in the space of three weeks in this race.

Jake Bament was also enjoying the third winner of his career on five-year-old Great Camanoe, whose form showing unseated, pulled up and fell was reflected in his starting odds of 20-1. Great Camanoe had mastered Arcs Abound when the latter blundered at the last. “He stayed really well and kept picking up for me,” said the 18 year old jockey who works in the Harry Fry yard at Seaborough, Dorset. Great Camanoe is sure to progress. “He is a delightful horse and an absolute pleasure,” commented owner Rebecca Welch who also bred the gelding.

Hannah Welch had been concussed when Great Camanoe fell at Buckfastleigh three weeks ago and had decided to pass up the ride this time. The King’s College, Taunton scholar however did not leave empty handed. She returned from her injury when profiting from an exhilarating performance aboard five-year-old Polo The Mumm, who ran and jumped his eight rivals into submission in the four and five-year-old maiden. The winner was making his English debut and was bought on behalf of George and Rebecca Welch by agent Toby Jones out of a French claiming chase. Modbury trainer Sam Holdsworth has done well with ex-French horses this season (eg Beuvron). “Polo The Mumm has been really progressive with his jumping and work,” said the trainer.

The ground was really testing when the Confined took place as the last on the card, but this four-runner contest provided 19 year old jockey Sean Houlihan with the first winner of his career. This was Minella Ranger who stayed on gamely to hold the attentions of the Bryony Frost ridden Knight Pass. “I had six point-to-point rides in Ireland and joined Philip Hobbs eighteen months ago,” said the young rider who hails from Dungarvan in County Waterford. The winner is trained locally by Gordon Chambers for owners Mr and Mrs Tim Winzer.
