Preview: Dulverton West – Bratton Down, Sunday May 18th

A fantastic day out for all the family is in store this weekend, where the Dulverton West host their Point-to-Point at Bratton Down on Sunday 18th May. The first of three meetings to be held at the course this season. Over 110 entries have been received for the six race card.

With a stunning backdrop view of Exmoor, the picnics will be brimming full of goodies as Pony racing heads up the action at 11.45am. Then follows the main six race card, which starts with the UK Garden Powers James Hayes sponsored Restricted race at 1pm. Of the 25 entered, Carheney River from the Karyn Heard team is fresh from an easy win at Vauterhill, when coming home 30 lengths ahead of his nearest rival O’flo. Also entered is the Richard Barber-trained Its A Close Call, another to have won easily when winning his maiden at Woodford by 20 lengths. Ladfromhighworth is another suggestion, having clocked up a second here last season, and his recent four lengths third at Ston Eston behind the winner Mythologist could see him go close for the Camilla Scott team.

Brewer, Harding & Rowe Solicitors sponsor the Open Maiden, in which Golden Squirell has shown ability in his runs at Larkhill, when third behind Midnight Jade, and Stafford Cross having led until weakening approaching the last fence, in a race won by The Eaglehaslanded. My Rosie B ran a good second at Flete Park behind The Will Biddick-trained and ridden The Doom Bar.

The Brends Hotel sponsored Mixed Open has attracted 14 entries, of which Aiteen Thirtythree, Bellsinni Ron, Lucette Annie and Gone To Lunch are just some to mention with outstanding form this season. This is sure to be the feature race of the day, set over a distance of four miles and one furlong, it will be a true test of stamina and could stage a thrilling battle.

Midnight Breeze, Shanann Star and previous course winner My Rebel are suggestions for the Intermediate race. My Rebel trained by Becky Kennen, was only four and a half lengths third at the recent Vauterhill meeting, having won his restricted at Upcott Cross,he won his maiden here last season and goes well for jockey Leanda Tickle. This race is sponsored by Red Mills.

The PPORA Club Members race is run in memorial of Bob Pittard and sponsored by his family. Both Aiteen Thirtythree and Gone To Lunch hold entries if connections decide to bypass the Mixed Open, but it is worth taking a look at the newcomer Ambitous Pursuit This six year old gelding looks to be full of ability under jockey Pippa Glanville, having won both of their starts at the Flete meetings for the Glanville family, and may score their hat-trick here.

Concluding the days events is the James Pryce Tractors-sponsored Confined race. Robbie Henderson who is currently leading the area jockey’s title, could take the ride on either of the Ed Walker-trained entries Before The War with wins at both Flete meetings, or Blazing Whale having already scored his hat-trick of wins, including the Intermediate at Chipley Park and Mixed Open at Great Trethew. Will Biddick who is currently leading the national jockey’s title may get the leg-up on Minella Fifty, the combination is another already with a hat-trick when winning at Charlton Horethorne, Cothelstone and Stafford Cross, and would be a popular local winner here for the Claire Hitch team

On course facilities include bar, bookies, hot refreshments and a number of trade stands.

Entrance to the course is £10 per car & driver, £20 car and occupants. The course is located at Bratton Fleming, 9m NEof Barnstaple on A399, 11m N of South Molton EX31 4SG.

Preview: Lamerton Hunt, Kilworthy Sunday March 23rd

THE Condy Mathias sponsored Mixed Open has attracted a class field at this weekends Lamerton meeting, Kilworthy, Tavistock March 23rd. Aiteen Thirtythree is entered, having won his maiden at Larkhill in 2009, then going onto win a bumper,a novice hurdle and two chases when trained by Paul Nicholls. He lost his form in the autumn and was bought by Tracey Parker, now trained by Kevin Parker, and could well see daughter Natalie get the leg up. Also entered is Hunter Chase winner Kirkleigh, who was just denied a win by Minella Stars at Buckfastleigh, and again had to settle for second at Cothelstone. Another entry, Lucette Annie was a recent Cheltenham contender, and Double Bank could line up, having also entered in the Cheltenham Foxhunter Chase only to unseat his rider at the first fence.

Over 100 entries have been received for the now seven race card which starts at 1pm with the Pannell Commercials sponsored Members race, Dean Summersby holds three of the entries of which Mausefalle, under Darren Edwards ran second behind Twyford at Cothelstone, having clocked-up two seconds on good going in Ireland he could appreciate the drying ground. Tres Bien is another to consider for jockey Heidi Lewis, the combination having travelled well at Buckfastleigh last weekend before weakening three out.

Two divisions of the Open Maiden follow. The first division is the Yvonne Watson Memorial race in which Wood Park under Will Biddick has hinted ability, when two lengths second at Bishops Court last season. Grey Dreams trained by Teresa Clark could also have claims, having travelled well at the recent Treborough Hill meeting before weakening three out.

In the second division of the Open Maiden, which is sponsored by Langdon Transport Ltd, Nudge The Nugget could follow up after his two seconds this season at Cothelstone and Treborough. Harrys Kap trained by Ray Alford also gets a vote after his eye catching third less than a half a length behind winner Let Me Speak at Bratton on good going in June.

The Confined race sponsored by Dawn West Devon, could see the Emma Loosemore-trained Diamond Brook improve on his third at Buckfastleigh in February, and the Katherine Northcott-trained Almail is an interesting entry, having run third in a group three race at Chantilly and won a listed race for Freddy Head at Toulouse in 2010 his new career in Pointing could be worth following, and he may make amends for his fall at Wadebridge last weekend.

Tinhay Building Supplies sponsor the Restricted, in which the two entries from Camilla Scott’s yard hold good claims, with Ladfromhighworth’s recent second at Treborough Hill having been caught near the line by Level Spirit, and stable mates Honours Insite length second to Master Hooper at Cothelstone.

The Exeter Racecourse sponsored Intermediate, is the final race of the day, this could see Minella Fifty for trainer Claire Hitch, follow up on his impressive win at Charleton Horethorne under Will Biddick. The Keith Cumings-trained Thetalkinghorse is another exciting prospect who could follow up on recent wins at Black Forest Lodge and Treborough Hill.

On course facilities include bar, hot refreshments, bookies and trade stands. Entrance is £10 per car & driver, £5 per passenger and children free.

Course is located at Kilworthy near Brentor, Tavistock. Postcode PL19 OJX.

REPORT: DULVERTON FARMERS AT TREBOROUGH HILL SUNDAY 9th MARCH

ROBBIE HENDERSON took a strong grip on the Devon & Cornwall jockeys championship with three winners at Treborough Hill, where the ground was predominantly good. This was the first treble of the 24-year-old rider’s career.

Two of his winners, The Mythologist and Glacial Oscar, wore the colours of his parents Guy and Sophie and were saddled by his father who trains the family pointers near Shaftesbury, Dorset.

Six-year-old The Mythologist won the two and a half miles Maiden with consummate ease to set the ball rolling. “I thought he was still a bit heavy and he will come on for this,” said the trainer.

Bloodstock agent Tom Malone, who had sourced the gelding for the Hendersons at Cheltenham sales in January after he had finished runner up in a good Irish Maiden, was more bullish. “This horse is different class and will go on to better things,” said Malone confidently. The Mythologist has an interesting pedigree which looks more like flat breeding. He is by the Derby winner Motivator and his dam traces back to the Queen’s classic winner Highclere. Put The Mythologist into your notebooks.

It was a similar story behind the success of Glacial Oscar in the three miles Maiden. This strong topped gelding quickly strode clear when Robbie Henderson unleashed him in the home straight to score by 20 lengths. This time Malone had snapped him up for his current connections after a promising effort on his third racecourse appearance in Ireland six weeks ago. “He had a rough journey in that bad weather over the Irish Sea and has taken time to recover,” said Guy Henderson. Robbie was equally complimentary about this six-year-old. “No problems at all and he will improve a lot”, commented the jockey.

It was slightly harder work for the in-form rider in getting Level Spirit home in the Exeter Racecourse Intermediate. “He was keen early and is learning to settle,” said the jockey after his mount had mastered Ladfromhighworth in the closing stages. The Ed Walker trained Level Spirit, who had returned from a year off to win at Black Forest Lodge last month, sparked off a party atmosphere generated by his owners The Otter Club. This six-strong syndicate was soon making plans to celebrate their victory and combining it with a toast to baby Daisy, who was added to the Walker / Gundry  household last Friday. Congratulations to Polly and Ed.

The same connections went very close to winning the four miles Mixed Open when Hameldown Tor (Robbie Henderson) was caught in the last few strides by Gone to Lunch (Laura Scott). A great servant for owner Gary Lever, 14-year-old Gone to Lunch is trained by Camilla Scott just a few miles from the course. He had made relentless progress all the way up the home straight to prevail by a neck. “We didn’t think he was 100% fit. He had cut himself and needed stitches for an eight inch gash at Badbury Rings last season. Laura comes home from her studies at Cirencester at weekends to ride out,” reported Jeremy Scott, who was taking pre-Cheltenham time off from farm duties to help out.

Thetalkinghorse confirmed the good impression he had created at the Mid Devon  with a smooth success in the 11-runner Restricted. The Welsh challenger Lemonade Jack made most of the running, but Thetalkinghorse said goodbye to him when sweeping to the front two out. A blunder at the last was shrugged aside as a prelude to a 12 lengths victory. This Presenting six-year-old is owned by Hannah Broggio and Janet Cumings. He is stabled with Keith Cumings at Bishops Nympton and turned out to perfection as usual. “He has also improved for the better ground,” explained winning rider Matthew Hampton who works full time for Victor Dartnall.

The majority of races attracted good sized fields, but only four went to post for the Confined which featured a third career success for 21-year-old Natalie Parker on board Dashing John. The winner, owned jointly by the rider’s mother Tracy and Audreyc Manners, drew clear of Checkerboard two out to score by 20 lengths.

Although only five, BabenyBridge was winning the fourth race of his career in the Hunt race. This progressive gelding led from the fourth fence and held off the persistent challenge of Debs Dasher. “He hung a bit and will probably have a rest now,” reported winning 20-year-old jockey Lizzie Kelly who has caught the eye on her limited opportunities under rules this winter.

MONEY TALKS

Renowned stayer KING OF THE ROAD looked good each way material in the Four Miles Open and was backed from 10-1 into 7’s. He made much of the early running but was done with half a mile out. He had run a sound race at Badbury Rings recently but this was not one of his going days.

HAMELDOWN TOR’S good efforts behind Certain Flight and Ravethebrave in his previous outings this season was the best form on offer in the four-miler. Bookies took no chances with Ed Walker’s gelding and he was tight at 5-4 and 11-10. In the event he went down with all guns blazing as he was collared by GONE TO LUNCH in the shadow of the post. The Scott trained veteran was given a dream ride by Laura Scott after finding no friends in the ring (6-4 out to 7-2).

On a lesser scale there was money from Welsh faces for NIMBUS LAD in the two and a half miles Maiden. His previous Irish form was fairly modest but he was far from disgraced behind THE MYTHOLOGIST here having been supported from 10’s to 6’s

ANGER MANAGEMENT looked really fit and it was no surprise to see punters piling in to the former bumper winner. Backed from 12-1 into 4-1 he shot off like a train, but failed to see out the trip and was eventually pulled up. He would be of interest on a sharper track
