Going Update

Wednesday 18th April 2018 at 16:30

Good to soft, soft in places at Flete Park , 1pm, Sat April 21st.

15 April at 14:24

Last fence ready for final trim at Flete Park. As of Sunday 1.30pm soft, heavy in places following overnight rain.

Drying wind now and should be perfect by Saturday, given warm weather forecast as its old parkland turf. Hard work by the Dartmoor and Modbury helpers has ensured we are almost ready to go now.

Will update going later in the week.

15 April at 10:29

Walking Flete Park this afternoon (Sunday) will post going and photos later… last week we had four glorious sunny days followed by rain overnight last night. – Lee Glanville

14 April at 12:30

Fantastic drying day at Flete Park, third in a row. Looking forward to races on Saturday, April 21.

Preview extract:

The beautiful parkland setting of Flete Park, near Ermington is the setting for this weekend’s meeting in the Devon & Cornwall area on Saturday 21st April. Seven races will be on offer with pony racing, which has been kindly sponsored by landowner Antony Mildmay-White, heading up the action at 1pm, followed by the main race card at 2pm. A total of 118 entries have been received.

After racing follows a charity Clydesdale race run in aid of Devon Air Ambulance which features local Farriers taking on a team of Veterinary Surgeons from South Moor Vets. It is always a joy to watch these huge horse specimens thundering down the home straight with the novice jockey’s on board raising funds for a worthy cause.

On course facilities include beer tent, plenty of hot food and refreshment stands, bookies and 17 trade stands varying from Fine Arts by Insitju, Farmers Friend for country wear to Sam Bradley & Wolfrock Boat stands, giving the course a real country show atmosphere. Entrance to the course is £10 per person to a max of £30 per car. Pedestrians £10 and Children under 16 free. Dogs only on leads welcome. The course is located at Flete Park, Ermington PL21 9NX.

GRANVILLE’S BETTING GOSSIP – TIVERTON POINT-TO_POINT AT CHIPLEY PARK 25 JAN 2015

Website_TivMoney_Talks_Banner

Two odds-on favourites were beaten at a mercifully dry Chipley Park. I always take my wellys and leggings there and expect a mud bath but not this time.

It was about a score draw between bookies and punters in the end as one or two nicely backed horses took some cash out of the ring,

  • There was a bit of a shock in the opener. I thought Robin Will was a knocker at 10-11 but he came up a bit short when push came to shove. We should have known that Mary Sanderson’s familiar orange colours should not be opposed in the Members’ and her Blinding Lights duly obliged backed from 4’s to 3’s. The sporting venture of 52-year-old Alex Muirhead in getting his mount round to finish 5th on his first ride on Weston Lodge (8-1) in this event was a brilliant advert for ground roots pointing. He is sponsored by the City of Exeter Pipes and Drums, wears tartan colours,  and I could swear I could hear loud cheers from the band on each circuit
  • Alex_Muirhead Alex_Muirhead2
  • Despite an advance of three years, Bien Connu was all the rage for the Restricted, being cut from 4-1 to 5-2 joint favourite. He was on his toes in the preliminaries and battled on gamely in a tight finish between the first five which had your race reader tearing his grey hair out. The other joint fav, Shanks A Bunch (3’s to 5-2) was in contention until fading in the home straight and blundering over the last two jumps. Cecile De Volanges was also involved in the driving finish (10’s to 6’s)  and looks sure to take a Restricted.
  • Certain Flight was heavily supported to follow up last year’s win in the Mixed Open (4-6 to 1-2) with “G and T” holding out at 4-7 for the longest. Will Biddick’s mount would have been 1-20 on Betfair when swinging along after the third last, but Parkam Jack (easy to back at 10’s and 12’s) was having none of it and just outstayed his rival. I’m The Article (from Jack Barber’s Bien Connu yard) attracted late support from 14’s to 10’s but ran as if he needed the race (absent since 2013).
  • Jepeck may have been fibbing about his age in the race card, but this son of Westerner looked outstanding in the paddock and duly stepped up to Intermediate class with little fuss. Backed from 11-4 to 5-2 fav, he already looks hunter chase material.
  • Lucette Annie could not be opposed in the Mares race and 2-5 and 4-9 just about summed up her superiority over four rivals. Lady Annabel was backed into 12’s and this well bred mare may give her owner/trainer Mark Shears a come back winner before the season is out.
  • Only two horses were seriously backed in the first Maiden and they fought out the finish. Just Imagine It was having only the second run of his career and was the subject of substantial support from 7-4 to evens. This Kayf Tara six-year-old is still green and had to give best to the street wise General Girling ( 2’s to 5-2) as they locked horns on the run in. The form looks decent as they drew away from their rivals.

* Follow The Paint (2’s to 7-4) had started favourite on both her runs at Wadebridge and again had to settle for a placing in the concluding Maiden. Porlock Bay traded at odds-on on the strength of his good Larkhill run, but could not cope with a very game effort from 8-1 chance Midnights’mischief (yes funny spelling ).

Preview: Modbury Harriers Point-To-Point, Flete Park, Saturday May 3rd

IT  is the turn of the Modbury Harriers to hold their Point-to-Point at the stunning Flete Park course, this Saturday May 3rd. Pony racing heads up the action at 1pm, with a six-race main card starting at 2pm.

Their feature race of the day is The George Baskerville Ladies’ Open Four Mile Race. Included in the entries will be the Ross Oliver-trained Wee Fly. She is a course specialist, having won six time at this track, and this year, under jockey Bryony Frost, could see her take the Ladies’ Open four mile race for the fifth year in a row. The Rose Loxton-trained Join Together is another entry that could go well, for jockey Megan Nicholls, having won last weekend at Stafford Cross. Also to challenge could be the Camilla Scott-trained Gone To Lunch, having a total of nine Point wins and two seconds in Scottish Nationals, he is a true stayer, and won impressively, snatching a win at Treborough Hill under jockey Laura Scott. Although Gone To Lunch does hold a ticket to Cheltenham this week, so connections may choose to run him there.

In the W Daniels Plant Hire sponsored Open Maiden race, a suggestion would be Madam Be from the Ottery based trainer Ed Walker’s yard, having run second at the Dartmoor meeting here two weeks ago, coming home five lengths behind Ambitious Pursuit. The Doom Bar is also entered and should be popular, having run second for trainer/jockey Will Biddick at Kingston St Mary, that day headed near the line by Edeiff’s Lad.

Stanley Carpets sponsor the Restricted race, in which Ambitious Pursuit could follow up on his win here two weeks ago for the Glanville family. Another to consider is Whispering Wild, who also won his previous race here over the longer trip, coming home a length ahead of  Way Before Dawn. Gontdevon from the Robert Chanin team could also go well having scored two previous seconds at this track, and may appreciate any drying ground.

Lady Annabel from the Polly Gundry team, looks to be the likely favourite in the Friary Mill Bakery sponsored  Open Maiden two- mile four furlong race, after her second at Hackwood Park. The mare was unlucky to be brought down when challenging for third on her reappearance at Cothelstone. Beetle Jack under jockey Darren Edwards, is another suggestion, who could improve on his previous third here, and is a worthy each-way bet.

The two Ed Walker-trained entries of Hameldown Tor and Before The War, hold strong claims in the competitive Kitson Solicitors-sponsored Mens Open race. Hameldown Tor is another horse holding a ticket to Cheltenham this week. Before The War won the Confined race here two weeks ago, and his previous second in a Mens Open at Little Windsor behind Bellsinni Ron, makes him a leading contender with jockey Robbie Henderson on board. Other options could be Swansbrook from the Sue Popham team, having won this race last season, and Right Enough for the Hand family won the Restricted here two weeks ago, could also go close.

In the final race of the day, the Meadowside & St Francis-sponsored Confined race, suggestions would be the front running Ned White and Before The War if not running in the previous race. Notus De La Tour, trained locally by Clerk of the Course Sam Holdsworth, may well turn out again after his two lengths second to Level Spirit, at the Stafford Cross meeting last weekend.

The course offers stunning views of Flete Park, making it an ideal picnic spot, a host of trade stands, bar, bookies and hot refreshments.

Entrance is £10 car and driver £20 car and passengers. Location is Ermington, nr Ivybridge, Postcode PL21 ONX
