REPORT: AXE VALE HARRIERS POINT-TO-POINT AT STAFFORD CROSS SUNDAY 26TH APRIL 2015

WRITTEN BY GRANVILLE TAYLOR

WILL BIDDICK is marching on towards his half century for the season in his quest for a fourth consecutive National jockeys’ title, and put three more winners in the bag at the Axe Vale meeting. Considering the recent dry spell, the organisers produced remarkably good ground thanks to extensive watering.

Subtle Sovereign was untroubled under the champion’s guidance in beating his two opponents to in win his first Open, easing clear in the home straight. “This was his eighth win in his last nine runs. We will probably wait another year before going hunter chasing,” said Jeremy Barber, whose son Jack was saddling his 38th winner of the season.

The progressive Whataknight soon made it 39 for the Dorset trainer, drawing right away from his rivals at the second last to win the Intermediate, “He is an out and out galloper and just keeps going,” commented Jack, who trains the six-year-old for owners Terry Hamlin, Martin Dare and John Snook.

The Barber/Biddick treble was completed when five-year-old Royalzaro beat 12 opponents to win the Restricted. “He was a cheap buy in France and is going the right way,” reported the young trainer.

Kostaquarta almost made if four winners for the yard but came off second best after a protracted battle with Fiulin in the Confined. Now with Ed Walker, the winner is owned by the Carstairs Clan which consists of Guy and Alex Carstairs and their young children Zak, Oliver and Euan. “He was losing ground over his fences in a hunter chase at Newton Abbot the other day and we will stick to pointing for a while now,” said the trainer. Fiulin has a remarkable CV. By Galileo, he fetched 280,000 guineas as a four-year-old. AP McCoy couldn’t win on him, but apart from his pointing wins for previous owner Ross Oliver, the sturdy 10-year-old has won on the flat and over hurdles, and competed at the Cheltenham festival and Royal Ascot. Phew !

Fiulin’s successful jockey Robbie Henderson was out of luck in the Hunt race when 1-4 favourite Hameldown Tor tumbled out of the race when caught by the flailing legs of Miss Cupcake at the 13th fence. This event went to former hurdles winner Moyne Nineoseven who was partnered by Vicky Wade for the Nineoseven Partnership. “I bought him at Ascot last October, He has a few quirks and we have waited for better ground,” said trainer Sarah Pidsley who has four pointers in her yard at Payhembury near Honiton.

Silver Token was a warm favourite for the Novice Riders’ race but gave Harry Cobden a nasty fall when crashing through the wing of the 14th fence. Loose Preformer (Hedley Webb) was left clear but failed to withstand the well timed challenge of Maxi Chop (James King) after jumping the last. Despite an expensive price tag, the seven-year-old did not reach the winner’s enclosure for Paul Nicholls, but is proving a good novice ride and was following up his Hackwood Park win on Easter Monday. “James King and Stan Sheppard are sharing the rides and it was the turn of James today. This horse has bled before and could finish distressed, but has got his confidence back now,” reported trainer Rose Loxton.

It is not always plain sailing, even for champions, and after receiving his trainer’s trophy on a euphoric day at Sandown, it was down to earth, literally, the next day in a field at Stafford Cross. Four-year-old San Satiro carried the champion trainer’s colours in the concluding Maiden. The raw youngster, trained by Jack Barber, only got as far as the fourth fence before virtually stopping and depositing Will Biddick on the Devon turf..

Boymann went on to win the event under Leanda Tickle. The seven-year-old was home bred by owner Paul Mann. “He was unlucky not to win last year when he threw away a race at Trebudannon. He needs good ground and is now my third winner with my last three runners,” exclaimed delighted trainer Joe Tickle.

Preview : Axe Vale Point-to-Point, Stafford Cross, Sunday 26 April 2015

Website_SCA_Preview_Banner
Written by: Donna Harris

Hameldown Tor could be out looking for his fourth win of the season, for owners the Otter Club, in the Lee Clifford Engineering-sponsored Mixed Open at Stafford Cross this weekend. It is the turn of the Axe Vale to host their Point-to-Point meeting, near Seaton, Exeter, on Sunday 26th April. Local trainer Ed Walker scored a double last weekend, with Hameldown Tor taking the Mixed Open at Flete Park, and Level Spirit, another for the Otter Club, took the Confined race. Both are entered again here, and either are options for Robbie Henderson to ride. The challengers could be from the in-form Jack Barber team, with both Posh Totty and Subtle Sovereign having won recently under Will Biddick.

With pony racing heading up the action at 12 noon, this promises to be a great day out for all the family. Nearly 100 entries have been received for the main seven race card, which kicks off with the Beviss & Beckingsale-sponsored Members race at 1.30pm. Hameldown Tor also holds an entry in the members race, without him in the equation, Tandori is one to consider, from the Paul Phillips team, a previous course winner here, and ran a good second at Hackwood Park last month.

J & FJ Baker sponsor the Confined race in which Kostaquarta, another from the Barber team, could run well and follow up on his win at Milborne St Andrew. Louis Pasteur would need to improve on his recent second at Charlton Horethorne, Steeltown and Fiulin both ran well in a Hunter Chase at Exeter on Monday and could figure here if turning out again.

The Intermediate race has been sponsored by Martin Diplock Estate Agents, entry Cold Knight catches the eye, he is progressive and could go one better than his recent second at Andoversford, when sent off favourite that day. Sonoftheking is another to consider, also having run second in an Intermediate race, is also progressing well for the Nicola Martin team.

Harry Cobden won a Handicap Chase at Wincanton, whilst riding Ulck Du Lin for Paul Nicholls last weekend, he then made it to Littlewindsor the same afternoon to win on Cock Of The Rock. Harry’s possible mount in the Lentells Accountants-sponsored Novice Riders race is Silver Token, having clocked up four wins so far this season they are the likely favourites. Loose Preformer has been impressive, owned/trained and ridden by farrier Hedley Webb, they have won all three of their starts so should go close. Mic’s Delight for owner/trainer jockey Jennifer Davenport is likely to set the pace, and will put up a bold show.

The Restricted race is sponsored by Subaru, this could go the way of another Ed Walker trained entry On Your Max, having run close seconds in two restricted races this season. Both Royalzaro and Angleforcharlie could improve on their recent maiden wins and be in the mix. Gleannacreim from the Charlotte Hawker team, and Sparkling Miss from the Michael Miller team are other entries to note if the going stays on the good side.

The Scott Rowe Solicitors-sponsored Open Maiden race could go the way of the Milan sired San Satiro from the Barber team, the four-year old is yet to make his debut run. He is a half brother to The Eaglehaslanded, who took this race last season, and is owned by champion National Hunt trainer Paul Nicholls, he could be another horse for the future. Whatastormnorm ran well at both Great Trethew meetings, clocking up a second and third. Queens Law looked to find the going to testing when third at Upcott Cross, and is another who could appreciate the drier ground.

On course facilities include bar, hot refreshments, bookies and a number of trade stands. Entrance is £10 car & driver, £25 car load, pedestrians £10.

Location is Stafford Cross, nr Seaton (off A3052, 20m from M5 Junction 30 – EX24 6HZ)

GRANVILLE’S BETTING GOSSIP – LAMERTON POINT-TO-POINT AT KILWORTHY 22ND MARCH 2015

Website_Money_Talks_Banner_Lamerton

The form held up well at sunny Kilworthy with success for four clear favourites and two second favourites. Punters certainly had the edge during the afternoon and one regular backer found the first seven winners on the eight-race card. On the downside his wife now wants a holiday out of it.

Although RACEY LACEY (5-4 to 6-4) let her backers down in the opening Hunt race, it wasn’t long until the books took a pounding.

DOYEN DYNAMO (solid 6-4 fav) confirmed his Didmarton promise in the first Maiden under a patient ride from Danny Burton. STEEL BRUSH (3’s out to 5’s) was not wanted in the ring but this good looking ex-Irish pointer caught the eye on his British debut to chase the winner home and looks a winner in waiting.

The other division of the Open Maiden had to be divided on the day. WINTER SOLDIER (15-8 fav touched 2’s) just got the better of MOUNT PROSPEX (4 -1) in a driving finish to the first section in the fastest Maiden time of the day.

PETERBROWN (5-4 out to 7-4 fav) has experience under rules and his creditable second to Dicky Bob at Buckfastleigh gave him the form edge in the final maiden. The Karyn Heard trained seven-year-old jumped well and duly obliged under young Jake Bament.

So far so good, but if every favourite won the bookies would be out of business and sure enough the Mixed Open put a stop to the party. The popular South Devon gelding DOUBLE BANK (4-7 – 4-6) made a bold bid to dominate the race but was just caught by LOOSE PREFORMER (9’s to 10’s) on the gruelling final climb.

DICKY BOB is fast becoming a Devon & Cornwall star and the eight-year-old stepped up to Confined company under Jo Buck to record his fourth successive victory. The popular grey was sent off 4-5 fav.

SONOFTHEKING (3’S to 4’S) started second favourite for the 16-runner Restricted under in-form jockey Darren Edwards. He looked held approaching the last, but overhauled the 14-1 outsider TEMPLETON close home. Third placed IT’S ALL OR NOTHING was nibbled at from 14’s to 10’s and can win a Restricted.

The queues for ice cream had subsided when the flag was dropped for the final event at 6 o’clock, but there was plenty of activity in the ring. A few decent bets were seen for FOURSTAR RIVER whose odds rapidly contracted from 8-1 to 5-2. ACCORDING TO HARRY (7-4 fav) was also strongly supported having been laid to the early skirmishers at 7-2. In the end these well backed horses could only fill the places behind the Kayley Woollacott trained MINELLA WEB who was easy to back at around 6’s and 7’s.

REPORT ON THE LAMERTON POINT-TO-POINT MEETING AT KILWORTHY, SUNDAY 22nd MARCH 2015

Website_Report_Banner_Lamerton

by Granville Taylor & Donna Harris

THE old turf on the historic Kilworthy track (first used in 1925) was described by jockeys as “absolutely perfect.” for the Lamerton meeting.

The weather was also at its best with the massive crowd basking in sunshine against the scenic backcloth of Dartmoor.

Two winning rides thanks to Mausefalle and Sonoftheking kept Darren Edwards in a commanding position for this year’s Devon & Cornwall championship.

Mausefalle, trained by Dean Summersby, set the ball rolling for Edwards when staying on well to win the Hunt race for the Lamerton president Mike Bickell. “I was delighted to win the Members as dad did 50 years ago. He is a genuine hunter and has hunted all through the season,” said Mike.

Edwards had to work harder to get Sonoftheking home in front in the 16-runner Restricted, just getting the better of Templeton on the climb to the judge. Trainer Nicky Martin reported that her Wadebridge winner, “came from Philip Hobbs and couldn’t run last year after recovering from a twisted gut. He never produced much under rules and Richard Johnson suggested to take him hunting”.

Welsh jockey John Mathias denied Darren Edwards a treble when Minella Web showed plenty of determination to hold hat trick seeking According To Harry in the Exeter Racecourse Intermediate. The winner got first run at the foot of the hill to score in the colours of Roddy Harvey-Bailey. Winning trainer Kayley Woollacott said, “We bought him in Ireland relatively cheaply. He needs top of the ground and has done it nicely.”

Mathias had earlier scored on Winter Soldier, also saddled by Kayley Woollacott, in a Maiden race which had to be divided on the day. The five-year-old good looking Apple Tree gelding was home bred by Lucy Fielding-Johnson, who shares ownership with Ces Mitford-Slade. Winter Soldier mastered Mount Prospex (Jamie Lyttle) by a head after the pair had battled it out neck and neck from the penultimate. “He was broken as a two-year-old and this was only his second run. He will stick to point-to-pointing this year and could be one for the (DBS) bumper championship,” said Lucy.

Peterbrown jumped well and was always in the box seat in the hands of 18-year-old Jake Bament to win the other section of the Maiden. “Jake gave him a lovely quiet and confident ride,” commented trainer Karyn Heard, adding “He was bought at Ascot last year out of Nick Gifford’s yard for owner Sally White.” The race was marred by a nasty fall for Chester Williams, the reigning area novice title holder, who suffered concussion when Sedgemoor Top Bid came down at the third last.

Jake Bament was partnering his fourth career winner and another novice rider took the spoils in a competitive Mixed Open which was delayed for an hour whilst the medics worked on the stricken young jockey from the previous race. Hedley Webb, who works as a farrier, had ridden his first winner when Loose Preformer, whom he owns and trains, won at Didmarton two weeks ago. This time he conjured a great run out of the former National Hunt horse to pass the favourite Double Bank inside the final 100 yards. Loose Preformer changed hands for £80,000 in his younger days and was one of AP McCoy’s millions of winners in the past.

The well made six-year-old Doyen Dynamo had given notice of his ability when runner up at Didmarton on his British debut and went one better here in the Maiden race dedicated to the late Yvonne Watson, who had enjoyed success as a trainer on this track. Doyen Dynamo was saddled by Ed Walker for owners John Dorse and Mike Roe who acquired him from Ireland last summer. Winning jockey Danny Burton remarked that, “He took a circuit to get jumping but is a very nice horse.”

The consistent Dicky Bob notched his fourth consecutive victory under Jo Buck in the Confined in a tight finish with Diamond Brook and King Kash. Successful just a week ago at Buckfastleigh, the grey turned out again as fresh as paint. Owner/trainer Verity Nicholls said, “He went out in a field the next day bucking. I walked the course yesterday and thought we might as well go for it. If he comes out okay we will probably run on Easter weekend then turn him away.”
