THE Spooners & West Dartmoor host the first of two Point-to-Point horse racing fixtures in the area, to be held over the Easter weekend, with their meeting taking place on Saturday April 4th at Cherrybrook, near Tavistock. Six races are on offer which start at 1pm. They include a competitive Mixed Open, sponsored by Langdon Transport, in which entries include prolific winning mare Lucette Annie and Hunter Chase winner Double Bank. Hameldown Tor is another entry holding strong claims if following up from his win at Milborne St Andrew where jockey Rob Henderson clocked up his 100th winner.

The Exeter Racecourse Intermediate race features, which is a qualifier for the Connolly’s Red Mills Intermediate Championship final Hunter Chase to be at Cheltenham on April 29th. Entries include the two Nicola Martin-trained horses According To Harry and Sonoftheking, both with a strong chance of winning here. Miss Gotaway is another suggestion, having progressed well when taking the Restricted race at Buckfastleigh under Jamie Thomas for trainer Kayley Woollacott.

The Members race is sponsored by Condy Mathias, this could see locally trained Dicky Bob make it five out of five in Point races, having won at Kilworthy two weeks ago for the Verity Nicholls team, he seems unstoppable.

Tyre Marks sponsor the Restricted race, in which the Ed Walker-trained Doyen Dynamo could follow up on his win two weeks ago at Kilworthy, when taking the Maiden race three lengths ahead of Steel Brush. On Your Max another from the Walker team, ran a good second at Larkhill recently. Lucius Fabeo and Polo The Mumm could figure if the going stays soft, for novice jockey’s Olivia Hutchings and Hannah Welch.

The Rock Inn sponsor the Confined, with Mic’s Delight possibly skipping this meeting for Mondays fixture, it will leave the door open for Diamond Brook to follow up on his second to Dicky Bob at Kilworthy. Mausefalle is another to catch the eye, after his win under jockey Darren Edwards in the Members race also at Kilworthy.

The Open Maiden race is sponsored by Charles Stanley, which closes the days event. Suggestions are Spendajennie, Arny and Mount Prospex.

The course at Cherrybrook is a popular picnic track for all the family, with on course facilities of bar, bookies, many trade stands and hot refreshments. Entrance to the course is £10 per car & driver, passengers £10 to a maximum of £30, with children under 16 free. The course is located north of Tavistock signed from A386. Postcode PL19 OLA

Preview: East Cornwall Point-To-Point, Great Trethew, Sunday 29 March 2015

Website_EC2_Preview_Banner

Over 70 entries have been received for this weekends Point-to-Point meeting to be held at Great Trethew, Menheniot on Sunday March 29. The East Cornwall host the day, where two Pony races will head up the action at 12 noon, followed by the main race event starting at 1.30pm.

Come On Mother from the Robert Chanin team, looks a likely favourite in the St Austell Brewery-sponsored Open Maiden for four and five-year olds, having run a close second and coming home ahead of Mystery Edition and Motts Cross at this track earlier this month. The going that day was soft to heavy, and if conditions stay on the dry side, the sounder surface could see them battle out the placings here.

Dawe Hawken & Dodd sponsor the Open Maiden for four, five, six and seven year olds, which has attracted 27 entries, this race may well be divided on the day. Of the entries Spendajennie from the Kayley Woollacott team, ran well at Wadebridge when third behind winner Sonoftheking, and had shown previous form on good ground last season. Turnstone is another entry that catches the eye, having finished second here at the first meeting under current leading area jockey Darren Edwards, they could well put up another good performance for the Dean Summersby yard. Whatastormnorm is another to have run a close second in the divided Maiden at the last meeting here, when three lengths down to Great Camanoe.

In the Jamaica Inn-sponsored Mixed Open, Blazing Whale could go well, having taken the winners only Mixed Open at Buckfastleigh. He ran poorly in a Hunter Chase at Chepstow two weeks ago, but could make amends for his connections here having won this race last season. Welstonedruid is progressive and ran a good second here under Ian Chanin to Bradley Brook at the last meeting, he looks to be the main danger.

The PPORA Club Members Novice riders race could see Harry Cobden get another fine tune out of Silver Token. The combination have clocked up three straight wins for trainer Rachael Green, having impressed at Buckfastleigh when a six length winner of a strong field, that day holding Ladvie (also entered) in fifth. Cock Of The Rock could be another option for 16-year-old Harry, having taken the Novice riders race at Larkhill this month, and could be the preferred runner if the ground stays dry. Olivia Hutchings owns/trains and rides Lucius Fabeo, they stayed on well when winning the Members race at the earlier meeting here and could put on another bold show. This race is sponsored by Jefferys.

Exeter Racecourse sponsor the Intermediate race in which the Nicola Martin-trained Infamous Grouse has quickly progressed up through the ranks into Intermediate company. He goes well under current area leading jockey Darren Edwards. Sarah Tickle could send out Way Before Dawn, having taken the Restricted race here one length ahead of Sonoftheking (a winner last weekend) on that form looks sure to go close.

The Restricted race, sponsored by Blackburn Metals closes the days events, entry Great Camanoe ran on well under jockey Jake Bament to beat favourite Whatastormnorm here in a Maiden race, and could be the one to catch if improving on that run. Another consideration could be Gleannacreim from the Charlotte Hawker team, having run a good two lengths second behind Turtle Too at Charleton Horethorne.

On course facilities include hot refreshments, bar, bookies and a number of trade stands.

Course is located at Menheniot off the A38 between Liskeard and Saltash. Post code PL14 3PZ

Entrance car, driver and passengers £25, car and one passenger £20, £15 car and driver only. Children under 16 free.

REPORT ON THE EAST CORNWALL POINT TO POINT AT GREAT TRETHEW SUNDAY 8TH MARCH 2015

Website_EC1_Report_Banner

STEADY rain during the morning meant soft ground and testing conditions at Great Trethew for the East Cornwall fixture postponed from a fortnight ago.

The sun eventually came out and it proved a busy afternoon for jockey Darren Edwards who continues to lead the table in his quest for the Devon & Cornwall riders’ title.

The Wheddon Cross jockey took the Mixed Open on Bradley Brook after the useful chestnut had seized the initiative on the tight bend at the top of the hill. The race looked in safe keeping as this evens favourite strode clear down the hill, but his backers must have held their breath as he ran down the last fence. Explaining the slight blip his successful jockey reported that, “he had it well in hand and show jumped the last.” Trainer Nicky Martin. looking tanned on return from holiday said “Bradley Brook had stem cell treatment three years ago and we have to be careful about his ground. He went hunting yesterday like my other runners today. He will probably go to Chepstow next for a hunter chase.”

Wadebridge winner Sonoftheking represented the same connections (Nicky Martin is also an integral part of the owning Bradley Partnership) in the Restricted. This seven-year-old had to give best however to Way Before Dawn in a slow motion finish. The pair were locked in battle all the way down the hill and it was only in the last few strides that Leanda Tickle forced Way Before Dawn ahead.

Darren Edwards again had to settle for the runner-up spot when newcomer Turnstone just failed to peg back Only Gorgeous (Jo Buck) in the Open Maiden which had to be divided on the day. The winner is owned and trained by Lucy Gardner who explained, “We got him from Ireland last summer He is really straightforward but had lost his confidence after a fall in Ireland. He will go to Doncaster sales.”

Jo Buck just missed out on a double as Bold Perk was just outstayed by Lucius Fabeo ( who had beaten Only Gorgeous at Wadebridge) in the Hunt race. Olivia Hutchings was achieving her third career winner in the space of three weeks in this race.

Jake Bament was also enjoying the third winner of his career on five-year-old Great Camanoe, whose form showing unseated, pulled up and fell was reflected in his starting odds of 20-1. Great Camanoe had mastered Arcs Abound when the latter blundered at the last. “He stayed really well and kept picking up for me,” said the 18 year old jockey who works in the Harry Fry yard at Seaborough, Dorset. Great Camanoe is sure to progress. “He is a delightful horse and an absolute pleasure,” commented owner Rebecca Welch who also bred the gelding.

Hannah Welch had been concussed when Great Camanoe fell at Buckfastleigh three weeks ago and had decided to pass up the ride this time. The King’s College, Taunton scholar however did not leave empty handed. She returned from her injury when profiting from an exhilarating performance aboard five-year-old Polo The Mumm, who ran and jumped his eight rivals into submission in the four and five-year-old maiden. The winner was making his English debut and was bought on behalf of George and Rebecca Welch by agent Toby Jones out of a French claiming chase. Modbury trainer Sam Holdsworth has done well with ex-French horses this season (eg Beuvron). “Polo The Mumm has been really progressive with his jumping and work,” said the trainer.

The ground was really testing when the Confined took place as the last on the card, but this four-runner contest provided 19 year old jockey Sean Houlihan with the first winner of his career. This was Minella Ranger who stayed on gamely to hold the attentions of the Bryony Frost ridden Knight Pass. “I had six point-to-point rides in Ireland and joined Philip Hobbs eighteen months ago,” said the young rider who hails from Dungarvan in County Waterford. The winner is trained locally by Gordon Chambers for owners Mr and Mrs Tim Winzer.

Preview: East Cornwall Point to Point – Great Trethew, Sunday 8th March 2015

Website_EC1R_Preview_Banner

On Behalf of Devon & Cornwall Point to Point Association

Written by: Donna Harris

Next weekend will see the re-arranged East Cornwall Point-to-Point fixture take place at the popular track of Great Trethew, Menheniot on Sunday 8th March. Six races are on offer, and with entries of nearly one hundred horses, this promises to be a great day out. The course is popular for maiden horses experiencing the race course for the first time, with many going on to be future stars.

Racing starts at 12 noon with the Cornish Times sponsored Members Race, in which Fountains Cloud is a familiar name here having a good track record for Cornish trainer David Stephens. Having won four times at this course including a win last season, they could well be back for more. Lucius Fabeo ran on well when winning at Wadebridge for owner/trainer/ jockey Olivia Hutchings.Talland Bay from the Marcella Bayliss team, is another entry who ran well in second here last season, and Mon Chevalier from the Christine Gray team would be worth noting in the betting, having run well in a Hunter Chase last June at Newton Abbot.

Prydis sponsor the first of the 2m4f Open Maidens which is for four and five-year olds. This race looks wide open with only a few having already had their first runs. Last Pick from the John Heard yard ran a creditable third of 12 at Milborne St Andrew last month. Both Beetle Jack and L’ane Fou had outings last season when L’ane Fou got the better of Beetle Jack at Flete Park. Any market support for French import Polo The Mumm would be worth noting.

The Open Maiden for four, five, six and seven year-olds is sponsored by Group Travel, and has attracted 33 entries. This race could well be divided on the day. Those to note are Only Gorgeous, owned and trained by Lucy Gardner, ran a close second at Wadebridge last month. Spendajennie also entered, put up a good effort at Wadebridge, when coming home third under jockey Jamie Thomas for the Kayley Woollacott team.
In the Kings Head-sponsored Mixed Open, the progressive Raffa from the Mitford-Slade team is already on a hat-trick of wins this season, but he may be due a break after his thirds at Milborne St Andrew and then Badbury Rings. This race then could go the way of the Jane Williams-team Babeny Bridge. The latter having run a good second, under jockey Chester Williams this season, behind Aerial at Larkhill in December. Welstonedruid skipped Cothelstone last weekend in favour of connections running him here, he has had plenty of time to recover from his poor run at Black Forest Lodge, and build on what promised to be a bright future.
White Hair Engineering sponsor the Restricted race, in which Sonoftheking was eye catching when winning his maiden by three lengths, under current area leading gentlemen jockey Darren Edwards. Way Before Dawn had been consistently in the frame before finally winning his maiden at Black Forest Lodge earlier last month, and Theatre Goer is a previous course winner here who should come on for her run at Wadebridge.
The final race of the day is the Johnathan Blake-sponsored Confined, in which Kings Bench from the Marie McGuinness team is a dual course winner here and may come back to try for his hat-trick. Also entered is the Karyn Heard-trained Cottage Acre, who had shown some good form last season including a close third in a Mens Open at Bratton Down.

On course facilities include hot food and refreshments, bar, bookies,  and numerous trade stands.

Entrance is £25 car driver and two or more passengers, £20 Car, driver and one passenger, £15 car and driver, £6 pedestrians, children under 16 free.

Course is located at Menheniot, off A38 between Liskeard and Saltash. Postcode PL14 3PZ
