GRANVILLE’S BETTING GOSSIP DART VALE & HALDON POINT-TO-POINT – BUCKFASTLEIGH 13 MAR 2016

Website_Money_Talks_Banner_DVHH16

The second Buckfastleigh meeting of the season attracted a large crowd more akin to a Bank Holiday fixture (a hint of sunshine always brings the crowds out).

The 15 bookmakers presented a strong line and lost no time in chalking the prices up in good time – in contrast to a point-to-point meeting I had attended the previous day (not in the Devon & Cornwall area). Unbelievably in every race there the timid line of bookies failed to price up anything until the last few minutes when the jockeys had already mounted. Don’t ask me why.

After Beuvron (1-4) had easily seen off his two opponents in the Buckfastleigh opener, a succession of beaten favourites got the bookies smiling.

I was silly enough to back Looking Glass (5-4) in the first Maiden on the basis that Mike Legg was taking over from her novice rider. She is a difficult mare to settle and looked vulnerable when Betty’s Boy (4’s to 7-2) shadowed her along the back straight travelling ominously well. Sure enough Looking Glass crashed out at the third last, leaving Betty’s Boy to set up a double for Josh Newman. This strong bodied type has not been rushed and will improve further. Buz Barton (8’s to 4’s) was in touch until the top bend but was left behind coming down the hill, as was Onwegoagain (3’s to 5-2).

Forrardon Xmoor was easy to back at 6’s and 7’s prior to a hard fought success under Vicky Wade in the other Maiden division. Back In June (solid 6-4) has decent NH form to his credit and was a creditable second. Robin Longstride (6-4 to evens fav) got left behind at the top of the hill before snatching a modest third place. As his name suggests, he is a rangy type and there is more to come from him in due course

Seven of the nine entries for the Mixed Open went to post, Welstonedruid (5-2 to 7-4) had disputed favouritism with Ziggerson Hill (5-2  / 9-4 / 5-2) but there was money for Doctor Henry (7’s into 4’s). Steeltown (5-2 out to 9-2) looked a likely winner two out, but Doctor Henry responded well to his novice rider and took command on the final bend.

It was amusing that the presentation announcer said that Doctor Henry had come “all the way from Wales.”  He had actually travelled only 13 miles from his base at Modbury, South Devon, and was a first winner for owner / trainer / jockey Bronwyn Buttery.

It’s All or Nothing (11-10 / evens) was the next favourite to fail. Sea Bear (4’s to 7-2) put his beat foot forward this time to leave his modest Black Forest run behind him. Josh Newman gave Sea Bear a positive ride and the grey never looked like being caught.

Premier Portrait (2-9) could not be opposed in the three runner Novice Riders’ contest and duly won by 12 lengths after Overafrica (6’s – 7’s) had stayed with him until the second last.

In The Tub (8-11 / 4-4) was the obvious form choice for the Restricted on his Milborne and Larkhill form. Jo Buck soon had him out in front and he dominated proceedings throughout.

REPORT ON THE NORTH CORNWALL POINT-TO-POINT AT THE ROYAL CORNWALL SHOWGROUND, WADEBRIDGE, SUNDAY 10TH JANUARY 2016

Website_NC15_Report_Banner_Template

WRITTEN BY GRANVILLE TAYLOR

WELSH challengers mounted yet another successful foray at the North Cornwall point-to-point held at the Royal Cornwall Showground..

Jockeys described the going as soft, heavy in places on an afternoon punctuated by blustery rain and hail showers.

The early season Devon & Cornwall fixtures have provided rich pickings for Welsh stables, especially the Pyle, near Bridgend yard of David Brace and his jockey Byron Moorcroft, Bob The Butcher (Restricted race) and Doctor Braveheart (Men’s Open) completed a double for the pair on Sunday, taking Byron Moorcroft to the six-winner mark for the season. Seven-year-old Bob The Butcher, making his first appearance for 13 months, stayed on gamely up the final climb to repel the late thrust of Annwyl. “I think he has a bit more to give yet,” said owner/trainer David Brace, who bred the gelding at his Dunraven Stud. “I had his sire Needle Gun and his dam Brydferth Ddu, who was jet black, and whose name is Welsh for Black Beauty,”

Doctor Braveheart achieved his seasonal hat trick for the same combination in the Men’s Open. Byron Moorcroft dictated the pace against his sole opponent Big Fella Thanks (Noel George), and held on dourly up the hill to score by a length and a half before surviving a stewards’ enquiry for drifting across his rival near the finish. “We didn’t go much of a gallop and my mount hung a bit approaching the last fence,” commented the winning rider.

The aptly named Doctor Braveheart was stepping up to Open class for the first time having won his Intermediate at the showground last month. The horses for courses theory was further emphasised when Premier Portrait proved too strong for his 11 rivals in the Novice Riders Race, and when Ray Diamond took the Ladies’ Open.

The ex-Kim Bailey chaser Premier Portrait had followed up his Black Forest win in November by beating Kirkleigh on this course last month, and the pair provided an action replay of that result this time. Radley schoolboy Gus Levinson has now ridden Premier Portrait to his three victories this season in his father’s colours. “He is more of a stayer and didn’t hang this time. We may run next at Cocklebarrow in two weeks time,” reported the young rider whose busy life style includes fitting in A level studies.

The huge barn at this course is a real asset in bad weather, housing all the facilities, including trade stands and live coverage of the racing on a wide screen. It is a useful refuge for spectators and keeps the bookies in comfort. Hail stones were peppering the barn roof like bullets as the five runners paraded for the ladies’ race. The rain, wind and hail however failed to stop the likeable Ray Diamond from charging up the hill to defeat Rebel Du Maquis by seven lengths in a repeat of the Cornwall Hunt Club Ladies’ run here exactly one month ago. “He didn’t really enjoy it until he was in front,” reported winning jockey Olivia Hutchings, who has struck up a good partnership with this 11-year-old. Olivia works in the yard of Ray Diamond’s owner/trainer Jackie Du Plessis at Saltash. “We will probably stay in Ladies races and he can give Olivia plenty of experience,” said the trainer.

Iron Chancellor won the Confined comfortably under Sean Houlihan to repeat his success in this same race two years ago. Trainer Sue Popham reported, “We have only got two horses in training now. This one may be aimed at a Newton Abbot hunter chase later in the season and his stable mate Swansbrook will go to Black Forest next week.”

Sutton Storm seemed to relish the soft conditions to win the first division of the Maiden. Michael Legg pushed his mount clear round the final bend before going on to score by 12 lengths. The 11-year-old was enjoying a welcome change of luck having been runner up in a better race here last month. The gelding was home bred by his Sparkford, Somerset owner/trainer Angela Davis, who reported, “He suffered a broken rib when brought down in a Wincanton hurdle race which led to complications and major surgery. He is a different horse now and jumps brilliant. He is qualified for the Stratford Subaru Final.”

The other Maiden division saw the mare Follow The Paint turn her bridesmaid status into that of a bride. The six-year-old had been runner up in five maidens last season, and finally came good in the hands of Jo Buck when drawing away from the tiring favourite Looking Glass to score by 15 lengths. This was a first training success for Lydia Svensson, who has taken over three of the horses in John Heard’s yard near Okehampton. “I have worked for John for three seasons and he has given me the opportunity to train this year. Follow The Paint is such a nightmare at home,” she smiled, but Lydia will probably forgive the mare for her memorable success

Joe Tickle trained Sedgemoor Top Bid to win the two runner Members’ race in the colours of Paul Mann. Jamie Thomas made all the running to beat Miller of Glanmire by the length of the run in. “He could be aimed at the Intermediate final at Exeter. He needs better ground and would prefer a right hand course,” reported the trainer.

REPORT ON THE NORTH CORNWALL POINT-TO-POINT AT THE ROYAL CORNWALL SHOWGROUND, WADEBRIDGE, SUNDAY 11TH JANUARY 2015

Website_NCReport_Banner

DESPITE a biting wind whipping across the showground, the North Cornwall attracted plenty of support from a decent crowd and race cards sold out.

Robert Chanin introduced a useful recruit to English pointing in the shape of nine-year-old Sweet My Lord who took the Confined under Tom Chanin.

Robert said, “We looked for a horse all summer and got this horse through an Irish agent out of Willie Mullins’ yard. He was bought unseen and came to us in July. Plenty of other English trainers were interested but we did the deal and he is now owned by Tony and Eileen Worth. He is Tony’s first horse and we think a lot of him.”

I am not surprised because he scored five times over jumps in Ireland and was rated 134 after his last run at Cork shortly before he was bought. He looks a natural for sub- 3 miles hunter chases.

Sweet My Lord was completing a double for the Thorverton, Devon trainer initiated by Wadebridge specialist Byerley Bear in the Ladies’ Open. Despite losing her whip at the first fence, Leanda Tickle managed to fight off the spirited challenge of Jo Buck on the formerly useful chaser Dan Breen who chased the winner all the way up the finishing  straight.

Owned by Roger Knowles, the big chestnut Byerley Bear is virtually unbeatable on the showground where he was scoring for the seventh time. “He is entered for the Silverton at Black Forest next Sunday,” reported the owner.

It was also a case of horses for courses for Raffa, who had won his Intermediate at this track last month and successfully upgraded to Open status under regular pilot John Mathias. This tough little gelding looked to have the measure of the favourite Babeny Bridge when the latter almost slithered to the ground at the penultimate, and then readily held the staying on Hameldown Tor on the gruelling climb to the judge.

A very consistent home bred gelding by Milan, the eight-year-old is trained at Pontispool, Norton Fitzwarren by Richard (Ces)  Mitford-Slade, who owns him jointly with Lucy Fielding-Johnson. “He was as fat as a barrel when he came in from summer grass on 9th August last year. Apart from going round the farm we take him to various places including the gallops at Spaxton, West Buckland and to Washford. I am a bit big to ride him and Katy Bellamy does a lot of the work,” commented the trainer.

Hameldown Tor’s half sister Desert Queen also obviously relishes Wadebridge and followed up her recent Maiden win there by beating nine opponents in the Restricted.  “She was a bit keen over the first two so I just let her bowl along,” said winning jockey Michael Legg. This could be an under statement because the seven-year-old mare from the Dubacilla family was always firmly in command and never looked like being caught. Although she is for sale, Cricket St Thomas trainer Ben Clarke, assistant trainer to Anthony Honeyball, nominated possible targets including a Warwick mares bumper or a mares hurdle.

Joe Drinkwater rode his fifth career winner when Working Title, who again looked outstanding in the parade ring,  made all the running in the Novice Riders’ event. “He has now won three times here and could come back next month,” said Joe Drinkwater who trains the gelding.

Popular local farrier Ryan Chapman partnered his first winner on Benny’s Quest in the hunt race. Bought privately out of Neil Mulholland’s yard, the winner was more of a two miles horse under rules. “We  hoped he would stay. He is a cracking hunter,” said Ryan’s father Reuben who has five pointers in their yard at St Columb Major.

Now 30 years old, Ryan first rode in points at 16. “I got too big and with the farrier job and had a long break from race riding until a couple of years ago,” explained the tall Cornishman.

Le Clo De La Londe was an easy winner of the first Maiden under Jamie Thomas. “He was bought via agent JD Moore at the Aquana sales in France in July and shown as for sale at our open day. He is now owned by John and Sonia Gardener and jumps awesome,” exclaimed trainer Kayley Woollacott.

The other Maiden division went to the King’s Theatre seven-year-old Sonoftheking who was driven clear on the flat by Darren Edwards to beat the favourite Sisterbrooke, “I thought he needed the race,” reported trainer Nicky Martin. “We got him from Philip Hobbs where he was placed over hurdles but he had a twisted gut and couldn’t run last year. He might go back under rules,” added Nicky.
