Preview: Dartmoor Point to Point – Flete Park, Saturday, 18 April 2015

Website_DFP_Preview_Banner
Written by: Donna Harris

The first of two Point-to-Point horse racing fixtures takes place next Saturday 18th April at the glorious course of Flete Park Ermington. The Dartmoor will be hosting the days event, which is one of the most popular venues for enjoying the thrills and spills of racing for all the family. Pony racing heads up the action at 1pm with the 138cm and 148cm races, followed by the main seven race card at 2pm.The popular charity Clydesdale race will run at the end of the afternoon.

With the weather forecast looking good, picnics will be brimming, and the atmosphere electric. With over 100 entries received, the feature race looks to be the Mixed Open race, run over four miles, for the Lord Mildmay Memorial Challenge Cup. Sponsored by Totnes & Bridgetown, entries in this include Kingswood, a winner here last year for the Henderson family. His main challenger looks to be Hameldown Tor, the prolific winning gelding from the Ed Walker yard, he stays four miles, prefers the drier ground, and is seeking his hat-trick of wins this season.

Sally Goodman sponsors the opening Members race, in which Before The War should run well, having won twice on this track. Locally trained Brandy And Red could go well for trainer David Roger, having recently run second at Great Trethew under Pippa Glanville.

In the Kitson Solicitors-sponsored Restricted race, Steel Brush from the Keith Cumings team, has to be fancied having made all to win his maiden at Kingston St Mary, he had previously come home second to Doyen Dynamo at Kilworthy. Leo Clo De La Londe could follow up on his second at Cherrybrook, and Molly Oscar is another to note having run well until slipping up at Cherrybrook.

High Priority, another from the Keith Cumings yard, ran third at this course last season, and could run well again here in the Francis Clarke-sponsored Open Maiden two mile four furlong race, he was unlucky to be disqualified when finishing second to Judge John Deed at Kingston St Mary. Applesolutely is another to have been knocking at the door of a win, when finishing two lengths second at Great Trethew, under talented young jockey Sean Houlihan.

Rogers of Plymouth sponsor the Members Condition race, in which locally trained Sunken Secret is a previous course winner here, he would relish the drying ground for young jockey Pippa Glanville. The veteran Duxy Hill Lady could put up a good run, as could previous hurdle winner Knight Pass for the Frost team.

In the Elizabeth Maye Memorial Confined race, Right Enough won at both last years Flete meetings, he is lightly raced this season and was running well when finishing third at Cherrybrook. Swansbrook has also scored twice at this track and has finished in the frame on three of his four outings so far this season, and could figure here again.

The Open Maiden race is sponsored by Tony Glynn Scaffolding, this has attracted 28 entries and may well be divided on the day. Suggestions would be Follow The Paint, Miss Weld, My Rosie B and Spendajennie.

On course facilities include many trade stands, bar, bookies, hot and cold refreshments, hillside parking providng excellent viewing of the racetrack.

Entrance to course is £10 car & driver, £20 car and passengers. Course is located at Ermington, nr Ivybridge, PL21 9NX

GRANVILLE’S BETTING GOSSIP – SPOONERS & WEST DARTMOOR POINT-TO-POINT AT CHERRYBROOK SATURDAY 4TH APRIL 2015

Website_SWD_Money_Talks_Banner

What a difference a week makes ! From the wild Cornish weather at Great Trethew on the last Sunday of March to the sun and warmth of Cherrybrook and Trebudannon just a week later.

A never ending queue down the lane meant that vehicles were still entering the course at Cherrybrook after the second race on Saturday. The meeting saw five winning favourites out of six which would normally drain the bookies satchels. The holiday crowd however tend to go for longer prices instead of odds-on favourites with their pound bets, so little overall damage would have been done to the books.

Dicky Bob was the nearest thing to a certainty in the Hunt race (1-3 touched 2-5) but nearly came down at the first. Luckily Jo Buck gathered him up and he went on to complete a five-timer for the season.

I was going to back It’s All Or Nothing (2’s –9-4) in the Restricted after he had run so well at the Lamerton, but Molly Oscar (2’s to 13-8) looked very fit in the parade ring so I left it alone. The inevitable happened: Molly Oscar slipped up with a mile to go and It’s All Or Nothing went on to win easily – another lesson learned the hard way.

Lucette Annie (4-5 to 4-6) is in tremendous form at present and set up her seasonal hat trick in the Mixed Open after sparring for two miles with Double Bank, who was easy to back at 6-4 and 11-8 after opening odds-on. The mare’s relentless stamina eventually kicked in and she had the race in safe keeping when Double Bank scrambled over the penultimate and was pulled up.

Diamond Brook (6-4 fav) confirmed his Lamerton form with runner-up King Kash (11-4 to 9-4) to win the Confined and Flood Tide (7-4 fav) produced the only clear round of the seven runners to take the concluding Maiden.

REPORT ON THE EAST DEVON POINT-TO-POINT AT BISHOPS COURT, OTTERY ST MARY. SATURDAY 28th FEBRUARY 2015

Website_BC_ED_Report_Banner

WILL BIDDICK continued in top form at the East Devon fixture at Ottery St Mary on Saturday (Feb 28), where the rain softened ground rode heavy in places. The Cornish rider followed up his four-timer at Badbury Rings last weekend with a treble which keeps him well ahead of his rivals as he seeks a fourth consecutive National jockeys’ title.

Biddick teamed up with leading trainer Jack Barber to steer Roger Penny’s Earthpower home to a narrow success in a section of the Open Maiden for four to seven-year-olds. Pippa Glanville’s bold front running efforts on Miss Weld looked like paying off, but Biddick brought Earthpower through to challenge at the last, and drove his mount ahead on the run in. “This is the first winner I have trained for Mr Penny. He is a nice type by Milan and was lightly raced last year. He had a wind op in the summer,” said the young handler, who took over the promising gelding when his grandfather Richard Barber retired at the end of last season.

The Barber / Biddick combination struck again when Bien Connu made all the running to take the Exeter Racecourse Intermediate qualifier. This nine-year-old is quickly making up for lost time after a three-years absence, having scored on his comeback run at Chipley Park last month. “This was the plan today to qualify him for the Exeter final,” stated the Henley, Crewkerne trainer. “We had to virtually re-break him when he came in after his long absence. He can be a bit of a monkey and Josh Newman rides him every day,” added Jack.

Will Biddick achieved his hat trick and did what A P McCoy failed to do on Downtown Manhattan in the eight-year-olds and over Open Maiden. The soon to retire champion McCoy failed to reach the frame twice on Downtown Manhattan when the eight-year-old was in training with Jonjo O’Neill, but the well backed Presenting gelding relished the very soft underfoot conditions here under Biddick to beat the John Mathias ridden It’s My Island in the 10-runner field.

Claire Hitch sent out Downtown Manhattan to score from her Exmoor yard, and almost secured a four-timer for Biddick as another of her charges, I’m All Set, just went under in a driving finish in a section of the Open Maiden. This event went to the Welsh challenger Good Grammar who prevailed by a length under a powerful ride by Nick Williams.

Two Devon based jockeys rode their first winners on an action packed afternoon. Delphi Mountain gave 26-year-old Emma Watson her initial success in the well supported Hunt race. Emma did not panic when Robbie Henderson delivered his challenge on odds-on favourite Level Spirit rounding the final bend, and still held a slight lead when the challenger came down at the last. “We bought Delphi Mountain out of Richard Woollacott’s yard and he is owned by my boyfriend Christopher Pike. I work at Culmstock for Stuart Sampson and train the horse myself,” said Emma who was having only her fifth race ride.

Jennifer Davenport opened her account on Mic’s Delight, a horse she also owns and trains in the Novice Riders’ contest. “He came from Victor Dartnall and this horse is a gentleman, an absolute delight and he looks after me,” enthused Jennifer, 33, who is a vet with the South Moor Veterinary practice at Modbury.

It was good to see Jo Buck back in the winner’s enclosure as the strapping grey Dicky Bob, owned and trained by Verity Nicholls was given a positive ride by Jo to open her account for the season when beating Molly Oscar by 10 lengths in the Restricted. “He stays really well and has thrived since he won at Buckfastleigh,” said Verity.

Sue Trump’s useful 10-year-old Kirkleigh defied his 7lbs penalty to take the Mixed Open. The popular Silverton qualified gelding had also been successful at Buckfastleigh two weeks previously (today’s winners Mic’s Delight and Delphi Mountain were behind him on that occasion). Once again forcing the pace and jumping soundly, Kirkleigh (Tom Chanin) shrugged off the challenge of Fiulin and drew away after jumping the last. “We will look at a hunter chase at Chepstow next where he will probably get his favoured soft ground,” remarked trainer Robert Chanin.
