Report: Torrington Farmers Point-to-Point, Chapleton Barton, near Umberleigh, Saturday June 13 2015

Website_U_TF_Report_Banner

WRITTEN BY GRANVILLE TAYLOR

THE British point-to-point season drew to a close at Umberleigh last Saturday against the background of the traditional end of season party atmosphere. The Torrington Farmers’ meeting ended the six and a half months Devon & Cornwall area campaign stretching back to last November’s opener at Black Forest Lodge.

The prolific Welsh pointer Findlay’s Find has been a great servant to Paul and Myfanwy Miles and showed his liking for the track by repeating last year’s Men’s Open win under David Mansell. The sturdy nine-year-old was scoring for only the second time this season, but his illustrious career CV now shows 22 pointing wins plus a hunter chase.

“We nearly didn’t come after it rained on Friday because he needs fast ground and the firmer the better for him. Dave kept him to the outside for better ground and he really appreciates a test of stamina,” said Paul Miles. Jockey David Mansell is of course vastly experienced but has had a lean year by his standards. “This is my first pointing winner since Barbury Castle last December so I have doubled my score,” joked the rider.

The South Pembrokeshire qualified Rosies Peacock (John Mathias), bidding for his eighth success of the season, started favourite and was prominent until weakening up the final climb to finish last of the four runners. It was left to the Cheshire trained Threapwood (Oliver Greenall) to chase home the winner, with the only West country representative Bathwick Scanno a creditable third…

Florence Mary is another fast ground specialist and found conditions to her liking when taking the Ladies’ Open. The ten-year-old looked in trouble down the back straight but was sent past leader Skating Home after the final ditch to score readily in the colours of Jeff Fear, who described his mare as, “a late season horse.”

The winner was a third pointing success for 17-year-old jockey Lucy Mager, a recruit from pony racing, who has just completed her first year of A levels at King’s Wessex. Florence Mary’s Wedmore based trainer Emma Mellor, due to give birth in two months time, has done well to rejuvenate her charge “She has always been a monkey and was not a great eater. I have changed her diet and her therapist and she lives a bit like a mountain goat. She checks the cows and sometimes goes to the beach at Burnham,” smiled the trainer.

The Confined field was reduced to two when Just Seven crashed out after a circuit, leaving odds-on favourite Robin Will well clear. 10-1 outsider Lucys Girl looked a forlorn hope until the favourite’s stride shortened dramatically after the last ditch, allowing Lucys Girl and young rider Jake Bament to sweep past. The winner, bought cheaply at Ascot sales last July, is owned and trained by Dan Farr just two miles from the course at Atherington.

Carry On Nando finished alone in the Restricted to give Irish born jockey Sean Houlihan his fifth career winner. His mount was well clear when sole opponent Gouranga Society unseated Paul Sheard at the final fence. Owned by Jenny Luscombe and Richard Candy and trained by Gordon Chambers, the winner was also sourced from Ascot sales last July. “He needs top of the ground and would make a super schoolmaster. We gave Sean (Houlihan) his first winner in March,” reported the trainer.

Heidi Lewis is another pony racing recruit and steered Kawana Cove home in the Intermediate. Nine-year-old Kawana Cove is jointly owned by the rider and her father David, and is trained by her mother Maria. The gelding had undergone a lean spell this season after taking the Restricted on this card last June. “He doesn’t like it soft and hates tacky ground,” commented the 18-year-old jockey who works for Kayley and Richard Woollacott and was partnering her fourth career winner.

After finishing runner up on his only other mount of the day, Oliver Greenall celebrated his retirement from the saddle by winning the final race of the season on 12-1 outsider Come On Louis, a horse he also trains near Malpas, Cheshire. The rider has happy memories of Umberleigh having set the then record total of 56 winners in a season with a double there in 2008 (since equalled by his brother Tom in 2009 and recently considerably upped by Will Biddick this year). Sitting in the changing tent afterwards with some relief showing, 28-year-old Oliver with over 200 career winners to his name explained, “This horse is owned by my box driver Andrew Ralphs who couldn’t be here today. My brother Jake bought him as a four-year-old and he has had all sorts of problems. This is the first season we have had a clear run with him. My plan is to concentrate on training pointers next season and to take out a full trainers licence after that.

REPORT ON THE DULVERTON WEST POINT-TO-POINT AT BRATTON DOWN, SUNDAY 17TH MAY 2015

Website_BD_DW_Report_Banner
WRITTEN BY GRANVILLE TAYLOR

THE first of three late season fixtures at Bratton Down proved quite an occasion.for the British point-to-point world.

Will Biddick has held the National point to point title for the past three seasons. After beating his previous best seasonal total of 42 winners this year, the next natural objective was to better the previous British record of 56 winners in a season held jointly by brothers Tom and Oliver Greenall.

BD_DW_Biddick_#57
Will Biddick returns to the paddock at Bratton Down on the Claire Hitch trained Bernshaw, having broken the record for wins in a British point-to-point season.

The Cornish rider lost little time in breaking the record on Sunday by winning the opener on Bernshaw, but why stop there? Biddick went on to partner four more winners as the pressure came off during a memorable afternoon.

“My aim this year was to hold on to the National title but I soon picked up more winners (22 since Easter) and the record became a reality. Ollie and Tom went all the way to Umberleigh when they did it (last meeting of the season in June), but I have done it with four weeks to go at one of my favourite tracks,” said a clearly relieved jockey.

Bernshaw took the 13-runner Restricted in good style for the local yard of Claire Hitch, as a prelude to a trio of successes saddled by Jack Barber, who has supplied the majority of the champion jockey’s winners this year.

Bugsie Malone was the first of these in a 16 strong Maiden . This promising five-year-old, owned by Graham Roach, was making his racecourse debut and held on well when challenged by The Mystro up the final climb. “He came in late and we have had to do a lot of jumping with him. He is green and will improve,” reported the young trainer.

Cover_BD_DW_2015_2-6452
Will Biddick returns to the winners enclosure on Whataknight with Jack Barber

Six-year-old Whataknight is more the finished article and after opening his account on this course last year has now added a hat trick of wins this season. The Midnight Legend gelding looks a fine prospect and took the Members’ Conditions race for his owners Terry Hamlin, Martin Dare and John Snook.

The Barber stables tally was completed when Queens Bay was given a typically patient Biddick ride to win the Mares and Fillies race. “She has had time off and didn’t come in until February,” said Barber who trains this former bumper and hurdles winner for owners Lucy and Robert Dickinson.

Suzy Berry saddled the other leg of the five-timer when her father’s nine-year-old Otis Tarda just got the better of a spirited battle with Fourstar River in the Intermediate.

The Bob Pittard Memorial Maiden provided a major shock when the unconsidered outsider Highland Thistle prevailed in a tight finish under Merv Woodward. Bought as an unbroken four-year-old, the sturdy gelding is trained for owner Andrew Pope by Julie Pocock at Stolford on the edge of the Quantocks. “First time blinkers have made all the difference,” said the trainer as her charge finally put a string of disappointing efforts behind him.

untitled-6641
Bryony Frost driving for the line on Bellflower Boy to win the mixed open from Cecile De Volanges

It was a case of dispensing with headgear which has rejuvenated the four miles Mixed Open winner Bellflower Boy. Bryony Frost conjured a storming late run out of this multiple winning chaser who stayed on up the hill to hold the equally strong finishing Cecile De Volanges. “He loves galloping and is as tough as old boots,” exclaimed Culmstock based trainer Stuart Sampson who handles the 12-year-old for owner Ben Robarts, and was completing his first training double as he greeted his fourth winner of the season.

Top Chief was the first leg of the stable double in the PPORA race limited to riders who have won less than 10 races. Jake Bament, who was partnering his fifth winner of the season, works for the Harry Fry yard, and had his mount out in front from half way before shaking off Barneys Mate up the gruelling final hill. John Gardener and Terry Hamlin share ownership of Top Chief who was bought at Doncaster last September after winning twice for Irish trainer Gordon Elliott.

19-year-old Bryony Frost was awarded the newly installed Mike Trickey Memorial Cup for the best ride of the day on Bellflower Boy in the four miles Mixed Open.

After such jubilance, spare a thought for popular local point-to-point jockey Ed Barrett who has recently been transferred to the spinal injuries unit at Oswestry hospital. Ed is improving slowly from serious injuries sustained in a fall at the Eggesford meeting last month.

PtPRC: UK POINT-TO-POINTING INTRODUCES DBS BACKED BUMPER

Originally published by the Ppint-To-Point Racing Company on www.pointtopoint.co.uk, on the 18 December 2014

A bumper, restricted to horses that have won or been placed in British Point-to-Points, and open to their non-licensed trainers, will take place at Aintree in May. The £10,000 contest, sponsored by Doncaster Bloodstock Sales (DBS), is aimed at showcasing the potential of young British Point-to-Pointers.

The DBS Spring Sales Point-to-Point Bumper Final (A Maiden National Hunt Flat race), run over 2m1f on May 15, will be open to 4,5 & 6-year-olds only which have not run under any recognized Rules of Racing, and which, during the current Point-to-Point season and before May 9, have on at least one occasion finished first, second or third in a maiden Point-to-Point. From early in the New Year maiden races will carry a suffix highlighting the event is a DBS Spring Sales bumper qualifier. The final will be restricted to amateur riders, although they must hold Category A or B licenses.

Any horse that finishes first, second or third in the final will be offered a free wildcard entry to the DBS Spring Sales to be held on May 18-20. DBS Managing Director Henry Beeby commented: “DBS has long been a supporter of Point-to-Point racing and we are delighted that we are able to provide owners and trainers with a platform where connections can showcase young horses to a wider audience before they continue their career under NH Rules. This race, coming just three days before the start of the biggest NH sale of the year, the DBS Spring Sales, provides a perfect end-of-season target for many young horses whilst running for a £10,000 prize fund. We look forward to developing the race with Aintree and the PPA in 2015 and beyond.”

Clare Hazell, Chief Executive of the PPA, said: “This is another welcome indication that Point-to-Point racing is producing horses of a quality that is more than capable of competing under Rules. It will also give British Point-to-Point trainers a chance to show their skills to a wider audience and this initiative provides a worthwhile destination event for those with young horses to aim at.”
Oliver Greenall, who trains and rides Pointers, added: “This is a great opportunity. It’s fantastic to be able to buy, produce and run young horses in the point-to-point field rather than have to run from licensed yards. The £10,000 DBS Spring Sales Point-to-Point Bumper is a big pot of money to run for and allows us to showcase our stock to the wider racing community.”
