Point-to-Point horse racing takes place this weekend at Cherrybrook, near Tavistock, on Sunday April 6th, where the course offers a stunning view overlooking Dartmoor. Six races are on the card, with the Condy Mathias sponsored Members race starting the day at 1pm.
In the opening members race, Gorteenwood trained by Gordon Chambers, won his Restricted unchallenged in 2012, and ran second at this meeting in the same season, on his return to pointing this year, he was running well at Buckfastleigh until weaking four out, from a yard in form, he looks the likely favourite. Diamond Brook from the Emma Loosemore team, ran close at Kilworthy when less than four lengths fourth behind winner Cottage Oak. Another entry, Furmagiatt won this race last season, that day with Diamond Brook in third, but has struggled since.
Tyre Marks sponsor the Restricted, and of the 18 entries, trainer Ed Walker’s Vic’s Moll won at Milborn St Andrew under Robbie Henderson catching the leader Sutton Storm to win by a length, the mare can be quirky and if not in good spirits on the day another option could be the Richard Barber-trained Overtown Express, having won a Charleton Horethorne under Will Biddick on good to soft. Ratline Rose for the Kayley Woollacott team stayed on well to win at Wadebridge in January and followed that up with a two and a half length second to Sir Wattty.
The Mixed Open sponsored by Charles Stanley Investments, has attracted some quality horses including the progressive Welstonedruid and Kirkleigh both from leading area trainer Robert Chanin’s yard, and The Otter Club owned Hameldown Tor won this race last year and has been in the frame on all three of his starts this season including a three length second to Ravethebrave at Badbury Rings. The prolific winning mare Lucette Annie, trained by Simon Partridge, is also entered and could give jockey Darren Edwards another win to follow-up on his double at Great Trethew last weekend. Indiana Bay won this race last season under Josh Guerriero and could well be back to defend his title for trainer Jill Dennis.
Rock Inn sponsor the Confined in which Gershwinner, from the Emma Oliver team, could pick up the prize having run a close third behind Cottage Oak and Tugboat at Kilworthy, Hameldown Tor, Lucette Annie and Welstonedruid also hold an entry and could figure if switching from the Mixed Open. Notus De La Tour is an interesting entry being a previous Grade 1 Novice Chase runner-up, and could be one for the future.
Exeter Racecourse sponsor the Intermediate race and entries include recent winners Sir Watty who won his Maiden here last season and took the Restricted at Wadebridge, The Mythologist a winner at Treborough Hill and Ston Eston, and Master Hooper a winner at Cothelstone under jockey Matthew Hampton.
The Langdon Transport sponsored Open Maiden race concludes the day’s event, and market support for the Richard Barber trained Vivant Poeme would be worth noting, he was in touch under jockey Will Biddick, until falling four out at Ston Easton two weeks ago on his debut run.
On course facilities include hot food, bar, bookies and a host of trade stands.
Entrance is £10 car & driver, £5 extra passengers.
Course is signed from A386, North of Tavistock – PL19 0LA
