Preview: Dart Vale & Haldon Harriers Point-to-Point, Buckfastleigh, Sunday 13 March 2016

Website_Preview_Banner_DVHH16

Written by: Donna Harris

Point-to-Point horse racing action takes place at the popular historic course of Buckfastleigh next weekend on Sunday March 13th. The history of the course dates back to 1883 when the track was first used for National Hunt Racing. Two pony races head up the action at 12 noon starting off what promises to be another fabulous day out for all the family. The main seven race card commences at 1pm with the Kath Bond Memorial Members race in which it looks to be a local battle between graduate pony racing jockey’s Hannah Welch on either Polo The Mumm having run well in second at Chipley Park in January, or Beuvron, having clocked up three wins for Hannah including one at this course and was unlucky to unseat at the previous meeting here. Barnaby Treneer could take up the ride on North London, trained locally by Nikki Frost, the gelding has a Hurdle win under rules and could be one to follow in the pointing field.

The Winston Pincombe-sponsored Open Maiden race has already been divided with a suggestion in the first division being Looking Glass for trainer Ben Clarke, the mares previous seconds came at Barbury and Wadebridge, she looked a certain winner at Black Forest Lodge last month before running out two fences from home under jockey Mitch Bastyan. Onwegoagain could run well for the Reuben Chapman team, having clocked up three seconds last season, could make the most of her 7lb mares allowance under jockey Darren Edwards to challenge here.

Those catching the eye in the second division of the Open Maiden is locally home bred and trained for the Frost family Robin Longstride, he ran well last weekend at Charlton Horetorne when fourth under Bryony Frost, coming home within two lengths of winner Athreeothree, he may turn out quickly again. Debutante Get On The Yager for the Barber/Biddick team looks interesting and would be fancied in the betting ring for the current leading yard. WBW Solicitors of Newton Abbot have stepped up to sponsor this division.

Totnes & Bridgetown have been supporting the course since the early 1960’s and are again sponsoring the Mixed Open race here. Of the nine entered, Ziggerson Hill from the Jackie du Plessis team won her maiden at this course last season, going on to win a Ladies open at Trebudannon on good to soft. Locally owned/trained and ridden Doctor Henry for Bronwyn Buttery could figure, they have been waiting for drier ground to follow up on their five lengths second behind Premier Portrait at Black Forest Lodge. Welstonedruid is a winner of seven of his starts to date and another to consider, he was running well at Black Forest Lodge in February until unseating jockey Tom Chanin, the combination had clocked up a one and a half lengths second behind Blazing Whale at Wadebridge earlier last month.

Exeter Racecourse sponsor the Intermediate race in which Its All Or Nothing should be well fancied after running a good third under jockey Jo Buck at the February meeting here. Applesolutely could make the most of her 7lb weight allowance and go well for trainer Richard Mitford-Slade.

The Countryside Alliance Club Members race for Novice riders has attracted seven entries with the outside raider Premier Portrait from the Levinson team looks to be sent off certain short priced favorite having won four of his starts this season and will be the one they all have to catch.  The veteren King’s Wood may figure here, he has 13 Point wins to his credit and scored a treble two seasons ago under jockey Robbie Henderson, he was fourth on his only outing last season  and it will be interesting to see who gets the leg up if  appearing here.

Finally to end the day is the Subaru-sponsored Restricted race with one for the short list being In The Tub for bloodstock owner/trainer Tom Malone, having won a 17-runner maiden at Larkhill. Brandevin looked a promising prospect when winning his Maiden at Bratton Down last season and could go well for the Jack Barber team. Creative Inerta for trainer Harriet Brown looks progressive, of his four starts so far he won his Maiden at Black Forest Lodge 30 lengths ahead of the field and ran second in a Restricted also at Black Forest Lodge two weeks ago six lengths behind Itchymei’mscratch under jockey Ben Clarke.

With fabulous trackside viewing the course offers hot food and refreshments, bar, bookies and a host of traditional trade stands.

Entrance to the course is £10 per person up to a maximum of £30 per car. Children under 16 free, dogs on leads welcome.

Course is located 1m SW of Buckfastleigh at Lower Dean, adj  to A38 – Postcode TQ11 OLT

After a fine, sunny day and light winds, the Clerk of the Course reports the Going at Buckfastleigh is now Soft, Good to Soft in Places. From the forecast for continuing dry weather into next week, the prospects for Sunday’s race day are looking good. A further update will follow tomorrow.

From today dry weather is forecast into next week and further Going updates will be posted daily until race day.

General information

The days proceedings start with a D&C Area Pony Racing fixture which has two flat races scheduled for ponies 138cm and under, and 148cm and under, which get under way at 12 noon and the prize awards take place in the paddock immediately after their second race. This is followed by the main meeting at 1pm with seven races on the card, the Open Maiden having been divided and the last race is at 4.40pm. Further information can be found on the D&C Area website http://www.p2phorseraces-dc.co.uk

The course at Buckfastleigh offers excellent viewing and is easily approached off the A38 via a slip road to Lower Dean (TQ11 0LT) and is clearly signposted to the races. The car park is on the slope behind the course and vehicles enter at the top, drive downhill to park and to leave they continue downhill to a hard track and bottom exit; there is ample hardstanding for horse boxes and trailers. The course has all the usual amenities, bookies, a large catering marquee with a real ale licensed bar, great value hot food, home baking and beverages, together with various trade stalls and displays. Entry is £10 pp (to a maximum of £30 per car) and race cards cost £2.50. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times.

Going Update from Linda Matthews

Saturday 6th February 2016, 15:57

Wadebridge is ON tomorrow.

The Clerk of the course is there now and says that the going is soft

If the dip is too soft tomorrow they may take out fence 8, otherwise the course is looking fine.

Can lorries try and park on the tarmac roads where possible.

Friday 5th February 2016

The Clerk of the Course has been on the course today and reports that the going is still good to soft, soft in places.

Wednesday 3rd February 2016

The going today is good to soft, soft in places. 2 fences have been moved onto fresh ground and the course has recovered well with a good covering of grass.

The big change is that we’ve had to move the paddock today. The RC showground were concerned that the original paddock has not recovered well and they need it to be in good condition for cattle ring at the RC Show. So we’ve made a new paddock around the back of the Exhibition Hall. This means that horses will enter via a gate directly from the lorry park and leave the paddock through gates at the bottom with only a very short distance to the course near the Open Ditch. Spectators will have access to the paddock around the lower end of the hall and still be on hard surfaces. One advantage is that horses will not have to go through the gate with spectators, nor share the ramp near the car park.

We might have the presentation area inside this time, especially if the weather is bad. I’ve ordered a “Wadebridge Racing” banner which we can display in a designated area between the office and the hospitality area. This would be easy for jockeys and we could have a table for trophies and mementoes. If we decide to do this we’ll announce it regularly.

The presentations will definitely be indoors as the microphone won’t get reception in the new paddock. Linda will try and get one of her helpers to let trainers know how to access the new paddock. The showground staff have suggested that lorries and trailers access the parking area via the top end and drive downhill.

Preview; The Western Point-to-Point Wadebridge Sunday 7th February 2016

Website_W16_Preview_Banner

Written by: Donna Harris

It is the turn of the Western Hunt to host their Point-to-Point meeting at the Royal Cornwall Showground, Wadebridge this coming Sunday February 7th. 60 entries have received for the six race card, with the Green Waste Co-sponsored Confined race heading up the action at 12 noon. The  Sue Popham trained Iron Chancellor won here in January, ten lengths ahead of the field under jockey Sean Houlihan, connections will be looking to score a hat-trick at this course by winning the Confined race, adding to his previous Hunter Chase win at Newton Abbot. Kings Bench from the Marie McGuinness yard could figure if finding some old form, but may be in need of the run.

The Savills-sponsored Ladies Open will attract much attention on the day, with Olympic gold medal cyclist Victoria Pendleton seeking her first winner in a point-to-point, she holds an entry here with previous course winner Working Title who has won four times in the past three years at this track. Victoria came within a head of her first ever win at last weekends meeting at Milborne St Andrew, on her planned Cheltenham mount Pacha Du Polder. The Jackie du Plessis-trained Ray Diamond may be the one to deny her a win here. Partnered by jockey Olivia Hutchings, Ray Diamond has won twice here this season, leaving the Chloe Roddick-trained and ridden Rebel du Maquis having to settle for second on both occasions. They too are entered and will be seeking to improve on that form.

Exeter Racecourse sponsor the Intermediate race in which Robin de Souza stands out having quickly progressed this season. The 6 year-old is trained in Lifton by Dean Summersby, and won his maiden at this track followed quickly by his Restricted win at Black Forest Lodge both under jockey Darren Edwards. Applesolutely from the Richard Mitford-Slade team in Pontispool, also catches the eye having won her restricted here in December, making the most of her mares weight allowance under jockey Sean Houlihan. The Flying Doc is another which could go well, coming from the in form Ed Walker team.

The Open Maiden race is sponsored by Stimson & Tieken with Berties Way being a suggestion having scored a second behind Sutton Storm at this track last month.  Driving Well out of the Francis Daniels yard is another to consider, having also run well here when two and a half lengths second behind Robin de Souza at the December meeting. With 17 entries received and a safety factor of 14 this race could well be divided on the day. If divided the second division will be sponsored by the Old Inn, St Breward.

In the Men’s Open race Doctor Braveheart has become something of a course specialist. Travelling down from the David Brace yard in Wales, and ridden by jockey Byron Moorcroft the combination have won twice here this season. This looks a stiffer task with entries such as Blazing Whale from the in form Ed Walker yard entered. Blazing Whale took the winners only Mixed Open race at Buckfastleigh last season on soft going and could be dangerous. Previous Hunter Chase winner Double Bank trained by Emma Oliver is the highest rated, he is a previous course winner here and won a Hunter Chase at Taunton last February. His only outing so far this season was when he pulled up at Chipley Park when carrying top weight, he may have needed the run and could be in the mix if defying his weight penalty.

The Hutchinsons-sponsored Restricted race looks equally competitive, entry Creative Inerta won his maiden at the second time of asking 30 lengths ahead of Whatastormnorm at Black Forest Lodge. Entry North George won his maiden for trainer Jonathan Tudor in November at Black Forest Lodge and followed up with a third in a Restricted race here in December. Polo The Mumm caught the eye at Chipley Park when second under jockey Hannah Welch, behind winner Stony Road in a competitive 13 runner race. Follow The Paint won her Maiden here impressively by 20 lengths in January and goes well for jockey Jo Buck who looks to have the ride again. Sutton Storm is another to have clocked up a Maiden win at this course, looks a really genuine type who would relish soft going.

There is a huge covered barn containing on course facilities such as hot food, refreshments, bar, bookies, trade stands, and a big screen which is sponsored by Reg Hamble & Cole and Rayment & White for those wishing to watch the racing close up. With pre-parade paddock and great track side viewing only a few yards away for fresh air fans. There are excellent disabled facilities.
