Preview: East Cornwall Point to Point – Great Trethew, Sunday 8th March 2015

Website_EC1R_Preview_Banner

On Behalf of Devon & Cornwall Point to Point Association

Written by: Donna Harris

Next weekend will see the re-arranged East Cornwall Point-to-Point fixture take place at the popular track of Great Trethew, Menheniot on Sunday 8th March. Six races are on offer, and with entries of nearly one hundred horses, this promises to be a great day out. The course is popular for maiden horses experiencing the race course for the first time, with many going on to be future stars.

Racing starts at 12 noon with the Cornish Times sponsored Members Race, in which Fountains Cloud is a familiar name here having a good track record for Cornish trainer David Stephens. Having won four times at this course including a win last season, they could well be back for more. Lucius Fabeo ran on well when winning at Wadebridge for owner/trainer/ jockey Olivia Hutchings.Talland Bay from the Marcella Bayliss team, is another entry who ran well in second here last season, and Mon Chevalier from the Christine Gray team would be worth noting in the betting, having run well in a Hunter Chase last June at Newton Abbot.

Prydis sponsor the first of the 2m4f Open Maidens which is for four and five-year olds. This race looks wide open with only a few having already had their first runs. Last Pick from the John Heard yard ran a creditable third of 12 at Milborne St Andrew last month. Both Beetle Jack and L’ane Fou had outings last season when L’ane Fou got the better of Beetle Jack at Flete Park. Any market support for French import Polo The Mumm would be worth noting.

The Open Maiden for four, five, six and seven year-olds is sponsored by Group Travel, and has attracted 33 entries. This race could well be divided on the day. Those to note are Only Gorgeous, owned and trained by Lucy Gardner, ran a close second at Wadebridge last month. Spendajennie also entered, put up a good effort at Wadebridge, when coming home third under jockey Jamie Thomas for the Kayley Woollacott team.
In the Kings Head-sponsored Mixed Open, the progressive Raffa from the Mitford-Slade team is already on a hat-trick of wins this season, but he may be due a break after his thirds at Milborne St Andrew and then Badbury Rings. This race then could go the way of the Jane Williams-team Babeny Bridge. The latter having run a good second, under jockey Chester Williams this season, behind Aerial at Larkhill in December. Welstonedruid skipped Cothelstone last weekend in favour of connections running him here, he has had plenty of time to recover from his poor run at Black Forest Lodge, and build on what promised to be a bright future.
White Hair Engineering sponsor the Restricted race, in which Sonoftheking was eye catching when winning his maiden by three lengths, under current area leading gentlemen jockey Darren Edwards. Way Before Dawn had been consistently in the frame before finally winning his maiden at Black Forest Lodge earlier last month, and Theatre Goer is a previous course winner here who should come on for her run at Wadebridge.
The final race of the day is the Johnathan Blake-sponsored Confined, in which Kings Bench from the Marie McGuinness team is a dual course winner here and may come back to try for his hat-trick. Also entered is the Karyn Heard-trained Cottage Acre, who had shown some good form last season including a close third in a Mens Open at Bratton Down.

On course facilities include hot food and refreshments, bar, bookies,  and numerous trade stands.

Entrance is £25 car driver and two or more passengers, £20 Car, driver and one passenger, £15 car and driver, £6 pedestrians, children under 16 free.

Course is located at Menheniot, off A38 between Liskeard and Saltash. Postcode PL14 3PZ

GRANVILLE’S BETTING GOSSIP – NORTH CORNWALL AT WADEBRIDGE 11 JAN 2015

Website_NCMoney_Talks_Banner

The first three favourites obliged, but this couldn’t last and punters were on the back foot in the next three until Sweet My Lord landed the odds in the last.

At least everybody was able to seek warm shelter in the huge Wadebridge barn and it doesn’t seem so bad losing money in there.

The Novice Riders’ event attracted a field of 11. Working Title looked very fit and had little difficulty in following up his win at this track just before Christmas. He traded at around 5-4 and will probably be back for more here next month.

In the same race, Cock of the Rock was nicely supported from 5-1 to 4’s to give ex-pony racer Harry Cobden a winning ride. He was travelling well on the inner when slipping up on the bottom bend after the eighth fence.

Early skirmishers had 1-2 about Byerley Bear to beat his four opponents in the Ladies’ Open. He was sent off at 2-5 and prevailed in a spirited battle with the useful ex-David Pipe chaser Dan Breen (solid at 5-2). The Bear will no doubt continue on his winning ways, but Dan Breen, who finished 7th in the 2011 Arkle chase at Cheltenham is worth following in his first season’s pointing. As a coincidence, Ghizao, two places ahead of Dan Breen in that Arkle finished third in this race under his novice rider

I thought that the 10 runners in the Restricted looked a really nice bunch in the parade ring. Black Forest winner Railway Benefit was all the rage, eventually starting at 11-10, but lost ground down the hill and never looked like catching the keen going winner Desert Queen (4-1), and the staying on runner up Ballanrahan (8-1). I also made a favourable note of Whispering Wild (easy to back at 10-1) and Old Grange (12-1) who needed the race after a lay off. The time for this race was only one second slower than the Men’s Open.

Ian Chanin deputised for the injured Chester Williams on warm favourite Babeny Bridge (6-4 to 5-4 fav) in the Men’s race. Will Biddick’s mount Minella Fifty was backed from 3’s into 5-2 and the eventual winner Raffa was nibbled at from 6’s into 5-1. Raffa was again given a positive ride by John Mathias to score for the third time this season. This small eight-year-old must have a big heart because he ran on like a tiger up the finishing hill after the favourite had sprawled badly on landing at the penultimate fence. Hameldown Tor looked in trouble at half way but did his best work near the finish to chase home the winner and would benefit from a stiffer track.

They went 3-1 the field in the first Maiden with Follow The Paint the market choice. This five-year-old was in front for a long way but is not yet the most fluent of jumpers and was left behind from the bottom bend by the Jamie Thomas ridden winner Le Clo De La Londe (6’s to 5’s).

11 of the 13 runners finished in the other Maiden but they were pretty well strung out behind long time leader Sonoftheking who was easy to back at 7-1. The favourite Sisterbrooke (2-1 to 7-4) chased the winner home, with third placed Spendajennie (4-1) looking a likely improver.

All credit to one of our bookmakers, Mike Smith ( pseudonym Hunton), who offered a £20 future free bet in a competition on the Jumping For Fun web site to pick the North Cornwall winners.
No, I didn’t win………

REPORT ON THE NORTH CORNWALL POINT-TO-POINT AT THE ROYAL CORNWALL SHOWGROUND, WADEBRIDGE, SUNDAY 11TH JANUARY 2015

Website_NCReport_Banner

DESPITE a biting wind whipping across the showground, the North Cornwall attracted plenty of support from a decent crowd and race cards sold out.

Robert Chanin introduced a useful recruit to English pointing in the shape of nine-year-old Sweet My Lord who took the Confined under Tom Chanin.

Robert said, “We looked for a horse all summer and got this horse through an Irish agent out of Willie Mullins’ yard. He was bought unseen and came to us in July. Plenty of other English trainers were interested but we did the deal and he is now owned by Tony and Eileen Worth. He is Tony’s first horse and we think a lot of him.”

I am not surprised because he scored five times over jumps in Ireland and was rated 134 after his last run at Cork shortly before he was bought. He looks a natural for sub- 3 miles hunter chases.

Sweet My Lord was completing a double for the Thorverton, Devon trainer initiated by Wadebridge specialist Byerley Bear in the Ladies’ Open. Despite losing her whip at the first fence, Leanda Tickle managed to fight off the spirited challenge of Jo Buck on the formerly useful chaser Dan Breen who chased the winner all the way up the finishing  straight.

Owned by Roger Knowles, the big chestnut Byerley Bear is virtually unbeatable on the showground where he was scoring for the seventh time. “He is entered for the Silverton at Black Forest next Sunday,” reported the owner.

It was also a case of horses for courses for Raffa, who had won his Intermediate at this track last month and successfully upgraded to Open status under regular pilot John Mathias. This tough little gelding looked to have the measure of the favourite Babeny Bridge when the latter almost slithered to the ground at the penultimate, and then readily held the staying on Hameldown Tor on the gruelling climb to the judge.

A very consistent home bred gelding by Milan, the eight-year-old is trained at Pontispool, Norton Fitzwarren by Richard (Ces)  Mitford-Slade, who owns him jointly with Lucy Fielding-Johnson. “He was as fat as a barrel when he came in from summer grass on 9th August last year. Apart from going round the farm we take him to various places including the gallops at Spaxton, West Buckland and to Washford. I am a bit big to ride him and Katy Bellamy does a lot of the work,” commented the trainer.

Hameldown Tor’s half sister Desert Queen also obviously relishes Wadebridge and followed up her recent Maiden win there by beating nine opponents in the Restricted.  “She was a bit keen over the first two so I just let her bowl along,” said winning jockey Michael Legg. This could be an under statement because the seven-year-old mare from the Dubacilla family was always firmly in command and never looked like being caught. Although she is for sale, Cricket St Thomas trainer Ben Clarke, assistant trainer to Anthony Honeyball, nominated possible targets including a Warwick mares bumper or a mares hurdle.

Joe Drinkwater rode his fifth career winner when Working Title, who again looked outstanding in the parade ring,  made all the running in the Novice Riders’ event. “He has now won three times here and could come back next month,” said Joe Drinkwater who trains the gelding.

Popular local farrier Ryan Chapman partnered his first winner on Benny’s Quest in the hunt race. Bought privately out of Neil Mulholland’s yard, the winner was more of a two miles horse under rules. “We  hoped he would stay. He is a cracking hunter,” said Ryan’s father Reuben who has five pointers in their yard at St Columb Major.

Now 30 years old, Ryan first rode in points at 16. “I got too big and with the farrier job and had a long break from race riding until a couple of years ago,” explained the tall Cornishman.

Le Clo De La Londe was an easy winner of the first Maiden under Jamie Thomas. “He was bought via agent JD Moore at the Aquana sales in France in July and shown as for sale at our open day. He is now owned by John and Sonia Gardener and jumps awesome,” exclaimed trainer Kayley Woollacott.

The other Maiden division went to the King’s Theatre seven-year-old Sonoftheking who was driven clear on the flat by Darren Edwards to beat the favourite Sisterbrooke, “I thought he needed the race,” reported trainer Nicky Martin. “We got him from Philip Hobbs where he was placed over hurdles but he had a twisted gut and couldn’t run last year. He might go back under rules,” added Nicky.

Preview : North Cornwall Point-to-Point Wadebridge Sunday 11th January 2015

Website_NCPreview_Banner

The Kivells sponsored Men’s Open looks to be the feature race of the day, at this weekends North Cornwall Point-to-Point to be held at the Royal Cornwall Showground, Wadebridge, Sunday Jan 11. Attracting many of the top horses and male jockey’s throughout the country, the winning horse will qualify for the £7,500 Bonhams Mens Open Final HC to be held at Cheltenham on Wednesday 29th April. Entered in this race Hameldown Tor trained by Ed Walker could be the ride for leading area male jockey Robbie Henderson. Minella Fifty from the Claire Hitch team is another entered and has been a winning combination with National Champion jockey Will Biddick aboard, but the gelding is yet to tackle this course. Kirkleigh from the Robert Chanin team is also entered, and could go well after running second here on his season debut last month, under jockey Tom Chanin. Course winners Raffa and Working Title both impressed on their previous runs and should feature if making the return trip.

After the Christmas and New Year break, this meeting promises to be full of action, and an early start time of 11.30am with eight scheduled races, attracting over 80 horses, offers a fabulous day out for all the family. The Moores of St Wenn North Cornwall Members Race heads up the day, and of the entries, Bennys Quest catches the eye, previously in training with Neil Mulholland, when winning three chases and a hurdle race, he could go well for local owner/ trainer Ryan Chapman.

The PPORA Club Members Race for novice riders is sponsored by Hops Oils, entries include the David Brace-trained Welsh raider Cock Of The Rock who looked to have needed the run at Black Forest Lodge in December when coming home fifth. Takamaru could be a ride here for young jockey David Noonan, the combination won here in December and look to be the likely favorites.
