THE Devon & Cornwall area got the new British point-to-point season under way at Black Forest Lodge on Sunday (29 Nov) in blustery, but dry conditions.

The Devon track attracted much media interest surrounding the debut over jumps of Victoria Pendleton. As a prelude to her quest to ride in the Cheltenham Foxhunter chase next March, the former Olympic cycling champion took the mount on 12-year-old Minella Theatre, saddled by her mentor Alan Hill, in the Club Members’ race.

Her experienced mount had been ridden to victory by Tony McCoy back in 2009, but with cameras thrust at her in every direction, the champion cyclist’s safe schoolmaster conveyance was back-pedalling in the rear soon after half way and she eventually pulled her mount up half a mile from home.

The nine-runner contest went to another ex-chaser in the shape of Premier Portrait, who gave Gus Levinson his first winner. This was a most accomplished ride by the 16-year-old who is taking “A” levels at Radley College. “I just wanted to keep him in a rhythm knowing he would stay well,” explained the rider, whose mount defied a 7lbs penalty after being fractious in the parade ring. The former Kim Bailey trained chaser is now owned and trained by the young rider’s father Dr Charles Levinson near Cheltenham.

It was the turn of another young jockey to shine when the imposing grey Argentato jumped well and made virtually all the running to win the Intermediate. 17-year-old Jordan Nailor hails from Moreton In The Marsh, Gloucestershire and works for jumps trainer Charlie Longsdon. “I rode my only other winner at Andoversford last season,” reported the rider. Argentato runs in the colours of the Cotswold Chancers Partnership and is stabled with Claire Hart, who missed the win due to her riding commitments at Cottenham.

Welsh challengers rarely go home empty handed from Black Forest Lodge and two of Sunday’s winners travelled across the Severn Bridge. Doctor Braveheart lived up to his name with a hard fought head victory in the Restricted. The six-year-old is owned and trained by David Brace who stands the gelding’s sire Dr Massini at his Dunraven Stud. “I bought Doctor Braveheart privately in Ireland last summer after he had run well in a Cork hunter chase but he really needs better ground,” remarked the owner/trainer. Byron Moorcroft, who works for David Brace, rode the winner, who just got up close home to deny Will Biddick’s mount Tempestatefloresco.

It was a similar story in the Open Maiden which saw 26-year-old Byron Moorcroft in the winner’s enclosure again at the expense of champion jockey Biddick. This time the Welsh trained Northgeorge had 12 lengths to spare over Wotzizname on reaching the judge to secure Byron Moorcroft’s double. “We bought Northgeorge at Ascot as a three-year-old reported Jonathon Tudor who trains the winner at Bridgend for owner Steve Young. “This is my first winner with my first horse,” exclaimed the delighted owner. “I drove rally cars for 26 years and now run a medical equipment company,” he added.

The Mixed Open produced a close finish won by The Wealerdealer, who asserted on the final bend and just held off Bradley Brook (Darren Edwards), and the evergreen Coombe Hill who was giving a first ride to Millie Wonnacott. The ever improving winner was ridden by Ian Chanin who also trains the eight-year-old and said, “He is owned by my fiancée Becks Barnett who is a farrier. We train just two horses at Rackenford and this one works with a nice un-named youngster by Winged Love.”

The two and a half miles Open Maiden for four and five-year-olds saw 15 of the 16 entries facing the starter. Iwanabebobbiesgirl and Red Red Rover set a scorching gallop, but at the business end it was left to the well backed Mystery Edition to fend off the challenge of Creative Inerta. “He idled a bit when he hit the front,” reported winning rider Rob Hawker. Mystery Editions owner David Luff is well known as the jockeys’ valet in the West Country but could not be present on this occasion. The winner was bought by his trainer Neil Harris as a three-year-old at Tattersalls, Ireland. “He is a lovely type and has strengthened up really well,” reported the Brompton Regis based trainer.

JOCKEY Darren Edwards teamed up with Lifton trainer Dean Summersby in scoring a first and last race double at Trebudannon, which just about escaped the circulating showers. The flags on the winning posts however indicated a very stiff following breeze up the home straight

Indian Dancer had shown promise on this track on Easter Monday and stayed on well in the opening Maiden race to overhaul long time leader Boymann just after the last fence.

“He was keen early, jumped well, and stayed on for me after hitting a flat spot on the last bend,” reported Darren Edwards. A good looking seven-year-old, the winner was bought by Dean Summersby at Ascot sales last October. He is owned by the trainer in conjunction with Belinda Fuller and Eileen Worth. “He has improved with every race but has done enough for the season now,” remarked the trainer.

Mausefalle took Darren Edwards to the 12-winner mark for the season when staying on well up the home straight in the concluding Restricted race, despite fiddling the last two obstacles. Dean Summersby bought the gelding at Doncaster sales last May and was saddling the seven-year-old for owner Mike Bickell.

Double Mead has travelled far and wide this season in her bid to add to her impressive tally of six victories last year. Her Ladies’ Open wins this year have come as far away as Marks Tey and Godstone, and this time the trip down the A30 to Cornwall from her yard at West Buckland near Wellington, Somerset, paid off in the Mixed Open. Alex Dunn rides and trains this mare and had the 12-year-old handily placed until hitting the front just after half way. “We are lucky to have such a good mare. She won here last year and this course is kept in such good condition. We could have gone to Maisemore Park last Monday but we think so much of this mare that we choose her ground carefully. They have moved all the fences to fresh ground and we came here for that reason,” explained the jockey’s mother Katherine Smith-Maxwell who owns the mare.

Robbie Henderson currently leads the Devon & Cornwall jockey’s table by a comfortable margin and his win on Hameldown Tor in the PPORA Club race took him to the 28-winner mark for the season, just six behind National title leader Will Biddick. Hameldown Tor was not hard pressed to hold off Rob Hawker’s mount Mr Redwood. The Ed Walker trained winner runs in the colours of the Otter Club syndicate, whose spokesman Ken Edwards nominated the John Corbett Cup at Stratford as his next likely objective. “He tries hard and has been placed every time this season so we wanted to give him a confidence booster here,” said the jockey.

The Open Maiden race for mares and fillies attracted 12 runners. Paper Lady, ridden by Bryony Frost, stepped up on her recent promising debut in this country at Flete Park by staying on gamely to hold the sustained challenge of the favourite Queen’s Law (Leanda Tickle). Bryony Frost took herself to double figures for the season on this winner who looks a tough sort. The Beneficial mare had been sourced in Ireland through Hadden Frost and Gerald Penfold. “She obviously stays well and we are looking for an owner,” said Jimmy Frost.

Leanda Tickle was narrowly beaten on Queen’s Law and went one better by winning the three miles Open Maiden on Dusky. Leanda was also reaching the 10-winner mark for the season and is hot on the heels of Bryony Frost in her quest for a first area lady jockey’s title. The five-year-old Winged Love gelding Dusky became the first training success for the jockey’s 26-year-old brother Joe Tickle who said, “I have three in training at South Molton including Boymann, who was just beaten in the first race. I broke Dusky in last summer. He is home bred by Rodney Gay, but unfortunately Rodney died last Christmas and never got to see him run. The gelding now runs for Rodney’s widow Vivienne.

There was disturbing news from Ross Oliver about his prolific winning mare Wee Fly who has been a star in the area for some time. Ross told me, “I was driving the lorry home from galloping the horses on the moor when a car came out of nowhere just a mile from home. I had to jam the brakes on and Wee Fly suffered cuts in the accident. She will have to be retired and will be covered eventually. The car driver drove off without stopping.”

HAMELDOWN TOR was virtually unbackable at 1-4 and 1-3 in the race for older horses. and it was surprising to see KNOXHILL ARCHIE, beaten over 30 lengths last time out, supported from 8s’ to 4’s in the same event. MR REDWOOD was cut from 14’s to 10’s,. but at least he ran up to his best form in finishing a commendable runner-up to the hot favourite.

The innovative card put on by the Four Burrow included a Mares maiden which attracted 12 runners. QUEEN’S LAW is on the upgrade and seemed a worthy favourite at 7-4. PAPER LADY had gained a favourable remark in the official form book however after her eye catching run at Flete Park, and started second best in the market at 3-1. These promising youngsters fought out the finish with Paper Lady running on in determined fashion to hold the favourite.

It was difficult to establish a firm favourite in the three miles Open Maiden with only modest form to go on. In the end, punters went for the newcomer Penzflo (5-2 to 7-4). This Luso mare didn’t look particularly imposing in the paddock, and revealed inexperience before finishing third behind DUSKY (5-2) and MISS WELD (14-1).
