Preview: Mid Devon Point-to-Point at Black Forest Lodge, Sunday 28th February 2016

Website_MD16_Preview_Banner

Written by: Donna Harris

A trip back to the popular Point-to-Point horse racing course at Black Forest Lodge is a must for all country loving family folk next weekend where the Mid Devon host their meeting on Sunday Feb 28th. Pony racing heads up the action at 12 noon and 12.30pm with two pony races on offer.

The main seven race card follows at 1pm and has attracted over 100 entries with the Open Maiden race already having been divided. The feature race of the day looks to be the Tozers Solicitors-sponsored Men’s Open race with ten quality entries headed by the Devon based trainer Emma Oliver’s Double Bank. This 13 year old dual Taunton Hunter Chase winner has won previously at this course and ran well when four lengths third at Wadebridge carrying top weight earlier this month. Those entered to take him on are outside raiders Premier Portrait already on a seasons hat-trick, and would have been four from four had young jockey Gus Levinson not been disqualified for not weighing in. Doctor Braveheart another on a hat-trick of wins is trained by David Brace who has a good strike rate at this course. Tony Star looks an interesting entry having previously been trained by Phillip Hobbs who has a Chase win under rules when ridden by Richard Johnson at Ludlow to his credit.

The Molyneaux Financial Planning-sponsored Ladies Open race also has quality entries with Devon based Hunter Chase veteren Coombe Hill entered. Trained and ridden by Millie Wonnacott. Coombe Hill has a total of six Hunter Chase wins and eleven Point-to-Point wins to his credit, and was narrowly denied a further win when a head second here at the January meeting. The Keith Cumings -trained What About Will should be considered having won his Restricted race at this course last season under jockey Vicky Wade. Outside raiders looking to challenge could be recent Wadebridge winner Sobre Tresor having won by twelve lengths ahead of Ray Diamond and Get It On from the Angela Rucker team who also catches the eye having run a good second in a Ladies Open at Barbury in December.

The Confined race sponsored by supporters of the Mid Devon could go the way of the Dean Summersby-trained Robin De Souza, a winner of all three of his Point starts to date including a win at this track when winning his restricted having stayed on well under Darren Edwards. Also entered is the Sue Popham-trained Iron Chancellor, a Hunter Chase winner who loves the soft going and ran a neck second at Wadebridge earlier this month when sent off odds-on favorite under Sean Houlihan. Whenharrymetsally from the Keith Cumings team is another catching the eye, having won well at Chipley Park in January when beating odds on favorite Posh Totty that day.

Sedgemoor Top Bid could fly the flag for the area if snatching the Intermediate race to follow up on his neck win at Wadebridge under jockey Lee Drowne.  Those looking to challenge could be Chipley Park winner Stony Road, Thorpe Lodge winner Minella Friend and Paddycards who ran second here in the intermediate race at the last meeting. Commanche Conflict looks to be a new recruit for the Alice Plume team and has shown some good place form in Intermediate company last season. The Intermediate race is sponsored by B.J. Barkwell & Sons and the Lyndridge Residential Home.

In the Subaru Restricted race the Harriet Brown-trained Creative Inerta could go well having won his maiden race here in January under jockey Ben Clarke, the combination were travelling well at Barbury two weeks ago before falling three out. Itchymei’mscratch from the Gareth Moore team is another suggestion having finished second in a 17- runner race at Cocklebarrow in January.

Two divisions of the Open Maiden end the days events, those entries having shown promise in the first division are Kilcoman Wizard having clocked up four seconds last season and deserves a win soon, Goodnight Sweetheart after his four lengths second at Larkhill earlier this month and the Ben Clarke-trained Looking Glass for his seconds at Wadebridge and Barbury. With Dark Gesture catching the eye in the second division of the Maiden, having run second here at the last meeting and looks sure to improve for the run, Nothing Personal and Troubleshot are two others showing improvement and could go close. Sponsors for the Open Maiden races are Devon Marquees.

The course offers excellent viewing, bookies, bar, hot refreshments and food, rail side parking for the disabled and many trade stands.

Entrance is £10 per person up to a maximum of £30 per car with five passengers. Children under 16 free. Dogs on leads welcome.

Course is located at Kenton near Exeter off A380 Postcode EX6 AHR

Going Update from Linda Matthews

Saturday 6th February 2016, 15:57

Wadebridge is ON tomorrow.

The Clerk of the course is there now and says that the going is soft

If the dip is too soft tomorrow they may take out fence 8, otherwise the course is looking fine.

Can lorries try and park on the tarmac roads where possible.

Friday 5th February 2016

The Clerk of the Course has been on the course today and reports that the going is still good to soft, soft in places.

Wednesday 3rd February 2016

The going today is good to soft, soft in places. 2 fences have been moved onto fresh ground and the course has recovered well with a good covering of grass.

The big change is that we’ve had to move the paddock today. The RC showground were concerned that the original paddock has not recovered well and they need it to be in good condition for cattle ring at the RC Show. So we’ve made a new paddock around the back of the Exhibition Hall. This means that horses will enter via a gate directly from the lorry park and leave the paddock through gates at the bottom with only a very short distance to the course near the Open Ditch. Spectators will have access to the paddock around the lower end of the hall and still be on hard surfaces. One advantage is that horses will not have to go through the gate with spectators, nor share the ramp near the car park.

We might have the presentation area inside this time, especially if the weather is bad. I’ve ordered a “Wadebridge Racing” banner which we can display in a designated area between the office and the hospitality area. This would be easy for jockeys and we could have a table for trophies and mementoes. If we decide to do this we’ll announce it regularly.

The presentations will definitely be indoors as the microphone won’t get reception in the new paddock. Linda will try and get one of her helpers to let trainers know how to access the new paddock. The showground staff have suggested that lorries and trailers access the parking area via the top end and drive downhill.

Preview extract:

It is the turn of the Western Hunt to host their Point-to-Point meeting at the Royal Cornwall Showground, Wadebridge this coming Sunday February 7th. 60 entries have received for the six race card.

There is a huge covered barn containing on course facilities such as hot food, refreshments, bar, bookies, trade stands, and a big screen which is sponsored by Reg Hamble & Cole and Rayment & White for those wishing to watch the racing close up. With pre-parade paddock and great track side viewing only a few yards away for fresh air fans. There are excellent disabled facilities.

Entrance to the course is £10 per adult up to a maximum of £30 per car. Children under 16 free.

The course is located off A39 West of Wadebridge. Post code PL27 7JE. For entries and form check out the Devon & Cornwall Point-to-Point website

REPORT ON THE NORTH CORNWALL POINT-TO-POINT AT THE ROYAL CORNWALL SHOWGROUND, WADEBRIDGE, SUNDAY 10TH JANUARY 2016

Website_NC15_Report_Banner_Template

WRITTEN BY GRANVILLE TAYLOR

WELSH challengers mounted yet another successful foray at the North Cornwall point-to-point held at the Royal Cornwall Showground..

Jockeys described the going as soft, heavy in places on an afternoon punctuated by blustery rain and hail showers.

The early season Devon & Cornwall fixtures have provided rich pickings for Welsh stables, especially the Pyle, near Bridgend yard of David Brace and his jockey Byron Moorcroft, Bob The Butcher (Restricted race) and Doctor Braveheart (Men’s Open) completed a double for the pair on Sunday, taking Byron Moorcroft to the six-winner mark for the season. Seven-year-old Bob The Butcher, making his first appearance for 13 months, stayed on gamely up the final climb to repel the late thrust of Annwyl. “I think he has a bit more to give yet,” said owner/trainer David Brace, who bred the gelding at his Dunraven Stud. “I had his sire Needle Gun and his dam Brydferth Ddu, who was jet black, and whose name is Welsh for Black Beauty,”

Doctor Braveheart achieved his seasonal hat trick for the same combination in the Men’s Open. Byron Moorcroft dictated the pace against his sole opponent Big Fella Thanks (Noel George), and held on dourly up the hill to score by a length and a half before surviving a stewards’ enquiry for drifting across his rival near the finish. “We didn’t go much of a gallop and my mount hung a bit approaching the last fence,” commented the winning rider.

The aptly named Doctor Braveheart was stepping up to Open class for the first time having won his Intermediate at the showground last month. The horses for courses theory was further emphasised when Premier Portrait proved too strong for his 11 rivals in the Novice Riders Race, and when Ray Diamond took the Ladies’ Open.

The ex-Kim Bailey chaser Premier Portrait had followed up his Black Forest win in November by beating Kirkleigh on this course last month, and the pair provided an action replay of that result this time. Radley schoolboy Gus Levinson has now ridden Premier Portrait to his three victories this season in his father’s colours. “He is more of a stayer and didn’t hang this time. We may run next at Cocklebarrow in two weeks time,” reported the young rider whose busy life style includes fitting in A level studies.

The huge barn at this course is a real asset in bad weather, housing all the facilities, including trade stands and live coverage of the racing on a wide screen. It is a useful refuge for spectators and keeps the bookies in comfort. Hail stones were peppering the barn roof like bullets as the five runners paraded for the ladies’ race. The rain, wind and hail however failed to stop the likeable Ray Diamond from charging up the hill to defeat Rebel Du Maquis by seven lengths in a repeat of the Cornwall Hunt Club Ladies’ run here exactly one month ago. “He didn’t really enjoy it until he was in front,” reported winning jockey Olivia Hutchings, who has struck up a good partnership with this 11-year-old. Olivia works in the yard of Ray Diamond’s owner/trainer Jackie Du Plessis at Saltash. “We will probably stay in Ladies races and he can give Olivia plenty of experience,” said the trainer.

Iron Chancellor won the Confined comfortably under Sean Houlihan to repeat his success in this same race two years ago. Trainer Sue Popham reported, “We have only got two horses in training now. This one may be aimed at a Newton Abbot hunter chase later in the season and his stable mate Swansbrook will go to Black Forest next week.”

Sutton Storm seemed to relish the soft conditions to win the first division of the Maiden. Michael Legg pushed his mount clear round the final bend before going on to score by 12 lengths. The 11-year-old was enjoying a welcome change of luck having been runner up in a better race here last month. The gelding was home bred by his Sparkford, Somerset owner/trainer Angela Davis, who reported, “He suffered a broken rib when brought down in a Wincanton hurdle race which led to complications and major surgery. He is a different horse now and jumps brilliant. He is qualified for the Stratford Subaru Final.”

The other Maiden division saw the mare Follow The Paint turn her bridesmaid status into that of a bride. The six-year-old had been runner up in five maidens last season, and finally came good in the hands of Jo Buck when drawing away from the tiring favourite Looking Glass to score by 15 lengths. This was a first training success for Lydia Svensson, who has taken over three of the horses in John Heard’s yard near Okehampton. “I have worked for John for three seasons and he has given me the opportunity to train this year. Follow The Paint is such a nightmare at home,” she smiled, but Lydia will probably forgive the mare for her memorable success

Joe Tickle trained Sedgemoor Top Bid to win the two runner Members’ race in the colours of Paul Mann. Jamie Thomas made all the running to beat Miller of Glanmire by the length of the run in. “He could be aimed at the Intermediate final at Exeter. He needs better ground and would prefer a right hand course,” reported the trainer.
