Preview: Eggesford Point-to-Point at Upcott Cross Sunday 10 April 2016

Written by: Donna Harris

Upcott Cross near Halwill junction is the venue for next weekends Point-to-Point horse racing fixture in the Devon & Cornwall Area. With racegoers still in party mode from the Grand National the day before, they can extend their passion for horse racing by joining in on the atmosphere of the eight race card on offer here which commences at 1pm. Over 100 entries have been received with the Open Maiden race already divided.

The feature race of the day looks to be the Eggesford Champion Mixed Open race sponsored by Simpkins Edwards, with an increase of prize money to £850 this race has attracted some quality entries which include the highly rated Chapoturgeon from the Jack Barber team. Chapoturgeon has won over £120,000 in prize money when running under rules, and was recently unlucky to fall at Cheltenham when running in the Foxhunter Chase, Will Biddick should be back on board this time and will be sent off the likely favorites. Blazing Whale from Devon trainer Ed Walker’s team will be looking to take the spoils, already on a hat-trick of wins this season, which include wins at Wadebridge, Bishops Court and Great Trethew, they could prove the main challengers.

The Nigel Cant Planning-sponsored Members race opens the event in which Follow The Paint for the Heard family would be a popular winner at the family owned track. Follow The Paint has already won two of her four starts so far this season when progressing at the Wadebridge meetings under jockey Jo Buck. Fishy Story from the Stuart Sampson team could figure, having run well at the Buckfastleigh meeting before fading two out finishing fourth that day.

The Exeter Racecourse sponsored Intermediate race looks a competitive affair with many of the 15 entered having clocked up wins this season including The Flying Doc for trainer Ed Walker with a win at Didmarton and a second at Larkhill, In The Tub for Bloodstock agent Tom Malone with wins at Larkhilll and Buckfastleigh, Upto Ollie for the Sarah Pidsley team with wins at Bishops Court and Kilworthy. Sonoftheking from the Nicola Martin yard has been runner up in three Intermediates this season and is another suggestion for the short list who could go close and snatch this.

David Pipe sponsors the Open Maiden for 4,5 and 6 year olds in which the Somerset trainer Patrick Bryant’s Pyleigh Brae could run well after his second at Ston Eston,  the Jill Dennis team will be hoping County Road can improve for his third at Buckfastleigh. The Karyn Heard-trained Daylami Days is an interesting debutante with the booking of Will Biddick to ride.

The Restricted race is sponsored by TT Buildings and catching the eye is  Athreeothree from the Jack Barber team, having been knocking on the door of progressing from Maiden company and obliging by winning at Charlton Horethorne last month. Forrardon Xmoor would also look to be one of the bookies favorites, having run second at this meeting last season and was a recent Maiden winner at Buckfastleigh for the Jilly Baskerville team under jockey Vicky Wade.

The Open Maiden race for seven year olds and over has been divided with 17 entries in each. The first division sponsored by Dave Phillips bookmakers, could go the way of the Karyn Heard-trained Back In June or the Frost family’s home-bred Robin Longstride. In the second division Driving Well showed promise at the Wadebridge meetings, and Classical Milano is another debutante from the Jack Barber team who should not be overlooked. Ashgrove Kitchens have kindly sponsored the second division of the Open Maiden.

Finally closing the event is the Chris Hodgson Engineering-sponsored Confined race in which Delphi Mountain for trainer and jockey Emma Watson could follow up on their win at Ston Eston last month, with Commanche Conflict from the Alice Plume team is another to consider having won the Intermediate at the February Black Forest Lodge meeting.

On course facilities include hot food and refreshments, bar, bookies and trade stands.Entrance to course is £10 per person up to max £30 per car. Children under 16 free. Dogs on leads welcome.

Course is located 2m South of Halwill junction off A3079 Postcode EX21 5AE

Preview: Silverton Point-to-Point, Black Forest Lodge, Sunday January 17th 2016

Written by: Donna Harris

A bumper entry of 118 have been received for Silverton Point-to-Point meeting at Black Forest Lodge which takes place this Sunday 17th January. The organisers have already divided the Open Maiden race into three divisions giving an eight race card which gets underway at 12 noon.

AGA sponsor the Ladies Open race which looks to be the feature of the day. Attracting an entry from the Alan Hill team, where Olympic Cycling Gold medalist Victoria Pendleton has been riding According To Sarah. This could be where Pendleton completes here first Point-to-Point and gains her place in the winners enclosure. According To Sarah ran competitively under Victoria when they were in the mix at Barbury until loosing touch and pulling up two from home.  There is plenty of talent lined up to take her on, including the prolific winning gelding Penmore Mill which could be the ride for jockey Hannah Lewis. Penmore Mill is on a total of nine Points and five Hunter Chase wins to date, and only recently denied another when held a neck second to Sagalyrique at Cottenham. With Repeat Business from Jonathan Tudor’s team holding claims with a previous course win, Cygnet having won two Hunter Chases last season for the Bowen family and the veteran Coombe Hill who gave Millie Wonnacott a peach of an introduction on her debut ride when coming home third here at the November meeting, are all among the 18 entries this is a race not to be missed.

The Best Western Hotel Tiverton-sponsored Confined race opens the day’s event, in which entry Supreme Danehill could be another mount for Victoria Pendleton to ride. Previously with the Edwards team, Darren Edwards steered him into second at the December meeting. The horse has recently been bought by Barry Orr of Betfair, sponsors of Victoria Pendleton. Looking to challenge could be Modbury owner/trainer and jockey Bronwyn Buttery with Doctor Henry. The combination ran eye catchingly well at the last meeting here when coming home five lengths second to Premier Portrait.

With twenty entered in the Simpkins Edwards Restricted race, Sea Current stands out among them. Having been sent off odds-on favourite at the Cottenham meeting two weeks ago and justified that by destroying the field by some 30 lengths. North George, another from the Jonathan Tudor team holds strong claims, having won his maiden at the November meeting here under talented in form jockey Bryon Moorcroft.

The Vision South West ltd-sponsored Men’s Open is another hot looking race with horses such as Hunter Chase winner Neverownup for trainer Mike Vanstone, Cheltenham Intermediate second place and previous course winner here Repeat Business, course specialist Welstonedruid for the Robert Chanin yard and the Keith Cumings-trained Little Cornham among the entries, looks sure to give another thrilling finish.

The Open Maiden race has already been split into three divisions, those to catch the eye in the first division which is sponsored by Wilkinson Grant & Co are Dark Gesture and Grey Dream. With Creative Inerta and Whatastormnorm suggestions in the Gingerlands Livery Ltd-sponsored second division. The vote in the  third division goes to Doc Lily another Doctor Massini sired home-bred from the in form Brace team, and Buz Barton, who could make amends for his first fence fall at Wadebridge last weekend to win this for the local Frost yard.

Devon Fuels sponsor the final race of the day the Intermediate, this could go the way of the Nicola Martin-trained Sonoftheking who ran consistently well last season. One of the outside raiders catches the eye, as High Hutton from the Jonathan Tudor team is the horse who was unlucky to unseat his rider at the ditch last season here before heading off into the country and was caught some four miles away. High Hatton was “none the worse for his trip” reported his owner Jeffrey Bird who jointly owns the horse with his wife Andrea, this was evident when High Hatton went on quickly to win his Maiden and Restricted races.

Entrance to the course is £10 per head up to a maximum of £30 per car with five passengers. Children under 16 free.On course facilities include hot food, bar, bookies, trade stands and course side parking for the disabled.Dogs welcome on leads.

There will be a  charity coat collection for coats going to Syria. Please take any unwanted clean spare adult/children coats to the point-to-point secretaries tent where there will be a collection point to drop them off.

Preview: Eggesford Point-to-Point at Upcott Cross Sunday 12 April 2015

Written by: Donna Harris
Horse racing enthusiasts will still be buzzing after the Grand National, and flock to Upcott Cross, where the Eggesford will be staging their Point-to-Point, which features their own four mile Devon National Mixed Open race, this weekend Sunday April 12. With a start time of 1pm, there are eight races on offer and a bumper entry of over 130 horses.

The Nigel Cant Planning-sponsored Members races heads up the days events, in which the Stuart Reddaway-trained Fourstar River could improve on his recent third at Kilworthy. Also entered is Hallo Dolly, having not been seen on the track for two years, her previous form of two Point wins and a third at this track could make her a leading contender.

There follows the Exeter Racecourse-sponsored Intermediate race, in which Roseyroo from the Louise Caddle team, could follow up on her second at Ston Easton last month, under Harry Cobden the combination were only denied by a neck. With the Jack Barber team sending out winners each weekend, his entry Ask The Weatherman has to be respected following his wins at Badbury Rings, Charlton Hawthorne and Cotley. Dancing Olga is a previous course winner here, and ran second in an Intermediate at Bratton Down on good to firm.

The Confined race is sponsored by Chris Hodgeson Engineering, this could go the way of According To Harry, he ran three lengths second to Minella Web at Kilworthy, having previously clocked up wins at Black Forest Lodge and Wadebridge. Jepeck for the Kayley Woollacott team won his Restricted at Larkhill and an Intermediate at Chipley Park, he pulled up on good to firm on his latest outing at Larkhill, but may run well here if any rain softens the ground.

The Devon National Mixed Open looks very competitive, Bellsinni Ron was second here last season, and could score under Will Biddick for the Barber team, Dashing John could improve on his third in a Ladies Open last month under Natalie Parker. Bradley Brook is another to consider, having won here last season and follow up on his recent win at Great Trethew. This race is sponsored by Simpkins Edwards.

In the Restricted race sponsored by TT Buildings, Boa Island catches the eye after his 20 length win of a maiden race at Charlton Hawthorne under National leading jockey Will Biddick last month. Peterbrown could go well for Karyn Heard, having taken the maiden race at Kilworthy, when making virtually all of the running to win by five lengths.

David Pipe sponsors the Open Maiden race for mares and fillies, in which Southfield Fairy ran promisingly at Ston Easton when third under jockey Alice Mills, and should be in the mix. Queens Law had hinted at ability last season when finishing second on both of her starts and may go well fresh.

The Open Maiden race for horses and geldings has already been divided. In the first division San Satiro could be a horse for the future, making his debut run here, out of the Jack Barber yard for owner Paul Nicholls. Both Turnstone and Master Max have had the benefit of a run this season, with any market support worth noting. The second division of the open maiden could see the Jill Dennis-trained Mount Prospex go one better than his head second at the recent Kilworthy meeting. Derniere Dance could be worth an each way bet. These races have been sponsored by David Phillips Bookmakers and Sarah Prouse Birthday Celebrations.

On course facilities include hot refreshments, bar, bookies and trade stands.

The course is located 2 miles South of Halwill junction, off A3079. Postcode EX21 5AE

Entrance to course is £10 per person up to a maximum of £30 per car. Children under 16 free.

Preview: Point-to-Point Silverton Black Forest Lodge Jan 18, 2015

The Point-to-Point season is starting to hot up, and this weekends scheduled meeting is to be hosted by The Silverton Hunt at the popular Black Forest Lodge track, on Sunday Jan 18. There are seven races on the card and over 120 entries have been received.

Best West Tiverton Hotel sponsor the Confined race which heads up the action at 12 noon. Of the 17 entries, Bradley Brook could be sent off favorite if connections choose to run him here. Leaving him out of the equation could result in a dual between ex Victor Dartnall-trained Mic’s Delight, who ran well at the last meeting for novice jockey Jennifer Davenport, and course specialist Welstonedruid who was held in fourth that day.

The Simpkins Edwards-sponsored Restricted race has 23 entered in which Full Throttle had recently scored a second in a Restricted at Cottenham for trainer Laura Thomas. Themanfromcork is another to hold claims, having clocked up his maiden win at Larkhill in December under reigning National champion jockey Will Biddick, for winning owner/trainer Heidi Tinkler.

The Ladies Open sponsored by Belinda Burgess, looks to be hotly contested with familiar names such as the veteran That’s Rythm who has ten Hunter Chase wins, and four Point wins, which include the Ladies race at Chaddesley Corbett last month under jockey Page Fuller. The unbeaten Alan Hill-trained Sharp Suit was the winner of the Connollys Red Mills Hunter Chase final, and the in form Byerley Bear who has already clocked up a double so far this season at Wadebridge for the Robert Chanin team, are among the thirteen entered. Foundry Square is another entry with some solid form behind him, and would be worth noting in the betting ring.

In the Bonhams Men’s Open, Baresi who won the Ladies Open here in November is entered along with prolific point winner Coombe Hill, who also has four Hunter Chase wins to his credit including wins at Cheltenham and Wincanton and is now in training with Chris Honour. Patricktom Boru scored at this course last season, and the twelve year old Rosies Peacock has an impressive 22 Point-to-Point wins for breeder/owner/trainer David Llewellyn including a Lady’s Dudley Cup and could put up another impressive challenge here.

The Open maiden races have already been divided, the first division is sponsored by Wilkinson Grant, in this the Sarah Tickle-trained Way Before Dawn has been knocking at the door of a win, and could improve here on his third at the November meeting. Another entry, Nortonthorpelegend, from the Ollie Greenall team had shown ability when third at Garthorpe last season.

The second division is sponsored by Devon Fuels, Loves Blind ran well at the November meeting here when a close third behind Jepeck and Captain Camelot. Also entered is the Gordon Edwards-trained Briefcase who hinted at ability when fourth at Larkhill.

The Intermediate looks just as competitive with 16 entries, with the ones that catch the eye being the Keith Cumings-trained Little Cornham, the two Kayley Woollacott entries, Devon General and King Cash, and Supreme Danehill who under jockey Darren Edwards, ran second behind Raffa at the Wadebridge meeting in December, had previously finished third here at the November meeting behind the Mythologist and Mister Teddy.

On course facilities include hot refreshments, bar, bookies and trade stands. Course side disabled parking. Entrance is £10 per head to max £30, children under 16 free. Course is located at Kenton nr Exeter Postcode EX6 8HR.

Met Office 5 day forecast: Exe Estuary, 2.7 miles from EX6 8HR at the same altitude
