Preview : Axe Vale Point-to-Point, Stafford Cross, Sunday 26 April 2015

Written by: Donna Harris

Hameldown Tor could be out looking for his fourth win of the season, for owners the Otter Club, in the Lee Clifford Engineering-sponsored Mixed Open at Stafford Cross this weekend. It is the turn of the Axe Vale to host their Point-to-Point meeting, near Seaton, Exeter, on Sunday 26th April. Local trainer Ed Walker scored a double last weekend, with Hameldown Tor taking the Mixed Open at Flete Park, and Level Spirit, another for the Otter Club, took the Confined race. Both are entered again here, and either are options for Robbie Henderson to ride. The challengers could be from the in-form Jack Barber team, with both Posh Totty and Subtle Sovereign having won recently under Will Biddick.

With pony racing heading up the action at 12 noon, this promises to be a great day out for all the family. Nearly 100 entries have been received for the main seven race card, which kicks off with the Beviss & Beckingsale-sponsored Members race at 1.30pm. Hameldown Tor also holds an entry in the members race, without him in the equation, Tandori is one to consider, from the Paul Phillips team, a previous course winner here, and ran a good second at Hackwood Park last month.

J & FJ Baker sponsor the Confined race in which Kostaquarta, another from the Barber team, could run well and follow up on his win at Milborne St Andrew. Louis Pasteur would need to improve on his recent second at Charlton Horethorne, Steeltown and Fiulin both ran well in a Hunter Chase at Exeter on Monday and could figure here if turning out again.

The Intermediate race has been sponsored by Martin Diplock Estate Agents, entry Cold Knight catches the eye, he is progressive and could go one better than his recent second at Andoversford, when sent off favourite that day. Sonoftheking is another to consider, also having run second in an Intermediate race, is also progressing well for the Nicola Martin team.

Harry Cobden won a Handicap Chase at Wincanton, whilst riding Ulck Du Lin for Paul Nicholls last weekend, he then made it to Littlewindsor the same afternoon to win on Cock Of The Rock. Harry’s possible mount in the Lentells Accountants-sponsored Novice Riders race is Silver Token, having clocked up four wins so far this season they are the likely favourites. Loose Preformer has been impressive, owned/trained and ridden by farrier Hedley Webb, they have won all three of their starts so should go close. Mic’s Delight for owner/trainer jockey Jennifer Davenport is likely to set the pace, and will put up a bold show.

The Restricted race is sponsored by Subaru, this could go the way of another Ed Walker trained entry On Your Max, having run close seconds in two restricted races this season. Both Royalzaro and Angleforcharlie could improve on their recent maiden wins and be in the mix. Gleannacreim from the Charlotte Hawker team, and Sparkling Miss from the Michael Miller team are other entries to note if the going stays on the good side.

The Scott Rowe Solicitors-sponsored Open Maiden race could go the way of the Milan sired San Satiro from the Barber team, the four-year old is yet to make his debut run. He is a half brother to The Eaglehaslanded, who took this race last season, and is owned by champion National Hunt trainer Paul Nicholls, he could be another horse for the future. Whatastormnorm ran well at both Great Trethew meetings, clocking up a second and third. Queens Law looked to find the going to testing when third at Upcott Cross, and is another who could appreciate the drier ground.

On course facilities include bar, hot refreshments, bookies and a number of trade stands. Entrance is £10 car & driver, £25 car load, pedestrians £10.

Location is Stafford Cross, nr Seaton (off A3052, 20m from M5 Junction 30 – EX24 6HZ)

Preview: East Devon Point-to-Point at Bishops Court, Ottery St Mary Sat 28th February 2015

Website_ED_BC_Preview_Banner

Point to Point racing resumes in the Devon & Cornwall Area next weekend where the East Devon host their meeting at Bishops Court, Ottery St Mary on Saturday 28th February. With over 130 entries received, this day promises to be full of action.

The Members race, which is sponsored by East Devon Associates, heads up the day at 12 noon. Local trainer Ed Walker holds four of the twelve entries, with Blazing Whale looking to be the market leader, having won the West Country Champion Chase at Buckfastleigh. He is a previous course winner here. Another from the Walker team is Level Spirit who won two races last year, but may be in need of the run on his first outing this season.

Two divisions of the Open Maiden follow, the first is sponsored by County Leisure Fibreglass Ltd. The Chief Villian looks an interesting entry, with some good form under Rules last summer. Also entered is Bertie’s Way from the Dean Summersby team, who ran a creditable third at Wadebridge under leading area jockey Darren Edwards. In the Mole Valley-sponsored second division of the Open Maiden, Miss Weld under novice jockey Pippa Glanville was running well at Wadebridge until three out and finished fifth. Stow Hill ran second in a Point in Ireland last May and is now in training with Ed Walker. Earth Power and Beetle Jack are others to catch the eye.

In the Michael Pidsley (The Devonshire Straw Man) sponsored Mixed Open, the eight -year-old Bellsinni Ron could be hard to catch if jockey Will Biddick gets the leg-up. The gelding is a winner of eight Points including four Opens and is with the in-form Jack Barber team. Kirkleigh has found his old form and could go well again for the Robert Chanin camp, having taken a competitive Confined race at Buckfastleigh this month. Whenharrymetsally is another who would relish the going if staying soft, and follow up on her short head win over Swansbrook earlier this month.

The Exeter Racecourse-sponsored Intermediate race could go the way of the Laura Thomas-trained Full Throttle, having won his Restricted in January, he followed that up with a length second to winner Will Fight at Godstone. Also entered is the Karyn Heard-trained Carheney River, is another who could go close having run two lengths second at Buckfastleigh and looks ready to step up into Intermediate company. Gale Force Lucey has already found the winners enclosure this season, and would relish the ground if it stays on the soft side.

Ford Simey Solicitors sponsor the PPORA members Novice Riders race. Silver Token ran and won last weekend at Badbury Rings, so may not turn out so soon, which leaves the door open for Mic’s Delight to snatch this. Owned/trained and ridden by Jennifer Davenport, the combination have been knocking at the door of a win all season. Working Title could be the one to deny Mic’s Delight a win, having won two Novice races, and ran second in a Mixed Open since coming home behind Mic’s Delight at Black Forest Lodge in November.

In the James Pinfold & Harris Timber-sponsored Restricted race, the Pauling Geering-trained Racey Lacey was backed into odds-on favourite and won her Maiden race at Wadebridge under Will Biddick, she looks progressive and could be the one to catch here. Another entry, Sparkling Miss from the Michael Millar team, has already shown promise in Restricted company, when second to Impact Area at Milborne St Andrew, and Mangans Turn from the Jack Barber team ran an eye catching three quarters of a length second at Chipley Park.

Finally to close the days events, is the Otter Brewery-sponsored Open Maiden race for horses eight years and over, suggestions could be Berry Smart after his second at Milborne St Andrew earlier this month, and Its My Island after her third at Chaddesley Corbett in December.

On course facilities include hot refreshments, bar, bookies and many trade stands. Entrance Car & driver £10, Car and passenger £20, Car plus occupants £30, Pedestrians £5.

Course is located at Bishops Court, Ottery St Mary. Post code EX11 1RJ

Rhys Williams’s Silverton Point-To-Point commentary, Black Forest Lodge, Sunday 18th January 2015

Website_SilvCommentary_Banner

A sunny and dry day resulted in a decent sized crowd. Some good racing with a few class performances and exciting finishes. The ground was sticky soft ground.

Confined

14 runners lined up for the opening race on the card. Welstonedruid went off 11-4 favourite and prevailed in a very tight finish with Mic’s Delight. Welstonedruid looked to have settled it shortly after the last but seemed to idle on the run in and almost got beat. Bradley Brook (2-1 out to 5-1) ran quite well in 3rd considering he was carrying a 10lb penalty.

Restricted Div 1

The Restricted was split on the day. Division 1 went to What About Will at 9-1, who was the only runner still galloping in the closing stages and some very weary horses clambered over the last. Kerry Mganga finished 2nd and Bamboleo 3rd, after Gentle Duke stopped to a walk on the run in after jumping the last in a clear 3rd. Larkhill winner Themanfromcork was a disappointing 4-6 favourite.

Restricted Div 2

The favourites flip-flopped in div 2 as Soixante Six was backed into 6-4 favourite while Full Trottle drifted from evens out to 9-4. These two fought out the finish with Full Trottle getting a crucial advantage of a couple of lengths after 2 out and held Soixante Six after the last. They pulled well clear of the 3rd, Sparkling Miss, who shaped with some promise.

Ladies Open

A warm contest for the Ladies Open with the 6 runners including multiple winner Byerley Bear, hunter chase 2nd Catspan and the Steve Flook trained pair Foundry Square and Rumbury Grey. Having led, Byerley Bear was headed on the run to 3 out and looked in a bit of trouble but he rallied well under pressure and got the crucial inside line on the final bend as Catspan and Foundry Square challenged. Foundry Square tried to challenge after turning in but couldn’t get to Byerley Bear who won at 4-5. Foundry Square came 2nd (6-4 out to 2-1) and Catspan 3rd.

Mens Open

A very competitive Mens Open and those at the head of the market came to the fore. Steeltown was sent clear of the field early on the final circuit but the gap was gradually closed by a few and Coombe Hill was the one who closed strongly after 2 out. He got to the front with a good jump at the last and the 14yo went on to win from Steeltown. Rosies Peacock, the 2-1 fav, ran well back in 3rd.

Open Maiden Div 1 Part 1

Div 1 of the maiden was split on the day. Part 1 looked a competitive race and produced a very tight finish between According To Harry and Swingbridge. The former, sent off at 4-1, just got the verdict from the 3-1 fav. The Mystro showed some promise in 3rd and should pick up a maiden.

Open Maiden Div 1 Part 2

Nortonthorpelegend’s price fluctuated around evens in Part 2 but he was in trouble early on the final circuit and could never get into the race. Victory went to Genermouse at 25-1 from Stony Road, who ran a promising race in 2nd, and Wivannie in 3rd.

Open Maiden Div 2

Carnage in Div 2 of the maiden. The favourite Loves Blind unseated early on. High Hatton (6-4 out to 4-1) had cruised into the lead when getting rid of James Tudor at the open ditch and the horse that followed him, Thegreendalerocket, unseated too. Very few of the 14 that set off were still going at the finish and it was Infamous Grouse that won to complete a treble for Darren Edwards. Morebutwhen and Gold Relief followed him home.

Intermediate

Visually the most impressive performance came in the last. Repeat Business (4s very early, then 5-2 into 7-4) travelled smoothly throughout and took up the running going across the top of the course. Little Cornham was the only danger at 2 out but Repeat Business quickly pulled clear, putting up a smart performance. Little Cornham was no match for the winner but ran well in 2nd and Argentato ran well in 3rd at 50-1. Supreme Danehill was the 6-4 favourite but could never get into a challenging position and ran below his best.

Good to see plenty of familiar local faces among the crowd and a few rare visitors to these parts.

Rhys Williams

Preview : Axe Vale Point-To-Point, Stafford Cross, Sunday April 27

The Axe Vale host this weekend’s Point-to-Point horse racing at Stafford Cross, near Seaton, East Devon on Sunday 27th April.

Pony racing, sponsored by Rob Perry Marine, head’s up the action at 12 noon, followed by the main seven race card, starting at 1.30pm. Over 100 entries have been received.

In the opening Members race, sponsored by Beviss & Beckingsale Solicitors, the Les Jefford-trained entry Miss Cupcake won this race last year, coming home ten lengths ahead of another entry, Our Georgie Girl trained by Ed Walker. Miss Cupcake ran well this February when two and a quarter lengths second to Un Ami at Badbury Rings.

J & F J Baker sponsor the Confined race in which trainer Rose Loxton holds two entries, Join Together who under jockey Megan Nicholls recently won at Cothelstone, and Current Event a winner of five Chases and a Hurdle race. Notus De La Tour stayed on well when second at Upcott Cross, his impressive form includes second in a Grade One Novice Chase. Whenharrymetsally from the Keith Cumings team is another to consider, having won at Great Trethew in March.

The Lee Clifford sponsored Mixed Open, could see Will Biddick get the leg up on Minella Fifty from the Claire Hitch team. The combination having wins this season at Cothelstone and Charlton Horethorne. Will Biddick rode his first ever winner at this track in 2004, when coming home in front on the Ross Oliver-trained Let’s Fly. This weekend may well see him return, looking to add to his total of well over 200 winners. John Daniell and Round Tom should not be left out of the equation if turning out again after their wins last weekend.

The Mythologist trained by Guy & Sophie Henderson and ridden by son Robbie, hasn’t been seen since his win at Ston Eston , but is highly regarded by his connections and could go off favourite in the Matford Land Rover sponsored Intermediate race. Master Hooper from the Robert Chanin team is another to consider, as is Soul Native having taken the 16 runner restricted at Cothelstone earlier this month under jockey Vicky Wade.

In the CA Club Novice Riders race, Join Together under Megan Nicholls, if not in the earlier confined race, and Barneys Mate for Christopher Barber could have a re match. The two met at Charlton Horethorne when Barneys Mate was caught on the run in by the determined Nicholls getting Join Together up to win by a length. Ladyvie is another likely to be in the mix for jockey Hannah Welch, having run second at Buckfastleigh and Cothelstone.

The Alice Pearn-trained Johnny No Cash looks a strong challenger for the Martin Diplock Estate Agents sponsored Restricted race, having run second behind Pure Oxygen at Cotley. This race may well be divided on the day having attracted 27 entries. Others to consider are Midnight Breeze for the Ollie Bush team, after his recent win at Portman. Donpierre for Ben Robarts having run well at Upcott Cross, and the Michael Miller-trained Sparkling Miss having won her Maiden at Milborne St Andrew, then ran three lengths third at Badbury Rings in a Restricted won by Posh Totty.

Concluding the day’s event, is the Open Maiden race sponsored by Scott Rowe Solicitors. Richard Barber holds three entries, General Ginger, Whataknight, and Willow Bird. Mount Prospex trained by Jill Dennis could follow up on his third at Upcott Cross. Paul Nicholls has entered The Eaglehaslanded and market support could be worth following.
