Preview: Tiverton Foxhounds – Chipley Park, Tiverton Sunday January 19

A Bumper entry of over 170 horses have been received for this weekends Point to Point meeting at Chipley Park, Tiverton, Sunday 19th January. With the Restricted race having already been divided, the organizers have gone for an earlier start time of 11.30am, to pack in what promises to be an action packed day.

Stags sponsor the Hunt Members race which heads up the action, For The Staff is now with the inform Robert Chanin yard, having previously won the Mixed Open here in 2012, that day making virtually all coming home three lengths ahead of Ned The Post, he should enjoy the ground and looks the one to beat, having only been denied once in three Point outings, and the trainer is firing out plenty of winners. The Mary Sanderson-trained Blinding Lights could also feature being a previous course winner here, and was only denied a second course win when beaten a neck by Turthen in this race last year.

Un Ami is a major contender in the first division of the Restricted race. Having won his Maiden at Larkhill for young jockey Chester Williams the partnership must be respected. The Chloe Roddick-trained rangy built Romassor should find this course more to his liking than the tighter corners at Wadebridge where he won his Maiden in December. He is an improving sort and is justifying his 38.000 euro price tag out of Fairyhouse, and surely one to follow.

The second division of the Restricted could see the Welsh raider/trainer David Brace take the spoils back to Wales with Dbobe, but the horse is far from a straight forward ride, having dumped his jockey Bradley Gibbs twice. Another entry, Glenwood Present from the Tanya Taylor team looks to be a safer bet, having only been headed in the final 50 yards at Wadebridge in December, finishing a length third to winner Lightening Jack.

Family of the late John Pearcey & Matford Landrover sponsor the Mixed Open, in which Cheltenham bound Kirkleigh, could start his seasons campaign for owner Sue Trump. Kirkleigh finished last seasons Pointing with a win at Little Windsor in a Men’s Open a neck ahead of Bellsinni Ron. Special Occasion out of the Sarah Gould yard could be a challenger here after his second last season at the course, prefers a right-handed track and five Open wins to his credit including getting the better of Certain Flight (also entered) by a neck at Kingston St Mary.

Of the 26 entered in the Exeter Racecourse sponsored Intermediate, Credit Crunched impressed at Black Forest Lodge when coming home 12 lengths ahead of the field at Black Forest Lodge in December, Theatre Queen was sent off odds- on favourite at Wadebridge and had punters counting their winnings before being headed two out, finishing third behind Champagne Rosie and Sobre Tresor. This could go to one of the Welsh raiders Waddington Hero from the Lee Power yard, a dual Irish Point winner finished second behind Tachbury at Black Forest Lodge when well fancied, and looks sure to take an Intermediate home soon.

In the Dodson & Horrell PPORA Club Members Race Barneys Mate trained by Richard Barber has 21 wins to his credit, and although now 14 years of age is a true schoolmaster, this season could see Barber’s grandson Christopher get the leg up. Working Title for the Drinkwater family obliged at Wadebridge winning the Novice Riders race by 15-lengths for young Joe Drinkwater, and followed that up with a third behind Googoobarabajagal in a Mens Open.

The Fillies and Mares race is sponsored by The Hartnell Hotel, Bolham and The Thoroughbred Breeders Association. The prolific winning mare Lucette Annie could start her seasons campaign, and would look sure to go favourite with ten wins to her credit including seven Opens, including the £1000 winners only race at Buckfastleigh for owner Janet Humphrey.

In the first division of the Open Maiden, sponsored by The Mount Pleasant Inn, Normansland, a suggestion would be The Drinkmeister who ran well under Sam Drinkwater, finishing two lengths second behind Mr McGregor on heavy ground at Chaddesley Corbett in December.

Friends of the Late Robin Barwell sponsor the second division of the Open Maiden in which Go On Henry under jockey Josh Guerriero and out of the Keith Cumings yard could follow up on his second to Flan The Man at Larkhill earlier this month.

The course offers excellent viewing, bar, bookies, hot refreshments and numerous trade stands.

Entrance is £20 per car, £10 car and single occupant.

The course is situated three miles NE of Wellington on B3187. Postcode TA21 OQU

Wessex Preview

Pointing Wessex have published their 2013 season preview to their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pointingwessex

Compiled by Brian Armstrong

Part 1 Somerset & Devon border

Part 2 Dorset & the rest of the area

Silverton, Black Forest Lodge Preview

Point-to-Pointing is finally back on track with the Silverton Foxhounds hosting their re-arranged meeting this Saturday February 9th.

Seven races are on offer and Molland Gayle could follow up on her win here in December for jockey Ian Chanin in the Hunt Members race which heads the action at 12 noon; another Robert Chanin entry Ned White ran on gamely in a Restricted at Wadebridge before being headed in the final 50 yards.

Ned White’s connections may prefer to run him in the Restricted race which follows, but he may need to tackle the Don Constable owned Joe The Trucker, an ex-Irish half-brother to British Pointing regular Optimistic Harry; the gelding won his Maiden here for jockey Tom David in December seeing Billy Congo off by half a length.

The Ladies Open entries include the Sarah Gould trained Special Occasion, having won this race last year and then going on to win at Larkhill he could well be in the mix if recovering well from his second at Chipley Park last weekend when beaten 3/4 length by Bleuvito, Oca De Thaix has wins in double figures and goes well for owner/jockey Charlotte Evans.

Knight Frank sponsor the Mens Open and the David Gibbs trained Books Review goes well fresh, he ran a creditable second in the Connolly’s Red Mills final at Cheltenham behind Doctor Kingsley. Silver Story’s nine wins include two Hunter Chases at Cheltenham/Aintree; he acts on any, stays well and could give trainer William Vaughan another success.

Two divisions of the Open Maiden follow and of particular interest is the Royal runner First Watch, trained by Zara Phillips; the gelding was travelling well until he unseated his rider Tom David at the 13th fence at Chaddesley Corbett earlier in the season.

An additional race to the programme is the Intermediate, the winning horse being eligible for the Connolly’s Red Mills Intermediate final Hunter Chase at Cheltenham on Wednesday May 1st ;of the nine entries the vote goes to the Sheila Crow trained Fruit Fayre having scored a double at Eyton. He could take this race unless course winner Molland Gayle opts for this over the Members race.

The course offers hot refreshments, bar, bookies and trade stands. It is located at Kenton nr Exeter off A380 postcode EX6 8HR. Entrance is £20 per car and passangers; £10 car and single driver.

Tiverton, Chipley Park, Saturday 2nd February 2013 Report

AFTER three blank weekends in the Devon & Cornwall area, point-to-pointing resumed against a backcloth of wall to wall sunshine at Chipley Park.

A total of 72 runners contested the eight races on very testing going with all race times in excess of seven minutes.

The usual strong contingent at this meeting from Wales produced their normal quota of winners from across the Severn Bridge, with Nick Williams partnering two of them. My Fella initiated the Welsh jockey’s double in the Intermediate. This ten-year-old is owned and trained by Andrew Quick near Cardiff.

Pyle trainer Stephen Bevan sent out eight-year-old George Reid to claim the final Open Maiden under a strong Nick Williams ride in a tight finish. “He has been off the track for two years having broken down on both front legs,” explained the trainer.

The Kayley Jones trained Robin Will (JohnMathias) scored easily in the other Open Maiden division despite jumping violently left in the straight. The fastest Maiden race, which was unusually limited to sponsored horses only, went to 33-1 outsider One and All, nicely ridden by Tom Cheesman for Katherine Mead and reported by connections to be “on the market.”

Course winner Bleuvito (Jeremy Mahot) just held Special Occasion and Carrickmines in a blanket finish to the Mixed Open. Owner/trainer Stanley Turner said, “I will try to get him qualified for the (Cheltenham) Foxhunters. The further he goes the better he is.”

The grey Fountains Cloud looks a progressive sort. He is a half brother to prolific pointing winner Chesnut Annie and revelled in the ground conditions to win the Restricted under Leanda Tickle. “I didn’t think he was fit enough, the last time I galloped him he blew up,” reported owner/trainer David Stephens.

Tired horses produce a slow motion finish to the Novice Riders’ event in which the former grade two winner under rules Nycteos gave his rider Susannah Andrew her second career success at the expense of Fiulin and Oakfield Legend. “He was trained by Paul Nicholls under rules and was given to me by Andy Stewart. He is a most game horse,” exclaimed the delighted rider who produces young horses for the polo field at Shepton Mallet.

Another young lady rider with something to celebrate was Eleri Apps who works in the David Pipe yard and landed her first winner on Turthen in the Hunt race. Now 12-years-old, Turthen was runner up in the Cheltenham Foxhunter four years ago and is trained by Eleri’s father Jonathan near to Chipley Park at Westleigh “We acquired him from Charlie Fox as a schoolmaster two years ago. He had a leg and has been fired, but we have hunted him well this year. He has worn out more shoes than Imelda Marcos,” quipped the trainer.
