Sunday, 17 March at 12:00

The going at Buckfastleigh remains SOFT

Saturday, 16 March at 21:44

Pony Racing 12 noon, 1st PtP Race 1.00pm.

Today’s very high winds, with occasional blustery showers, sure challenged our volunteers preparing for Sunday’s Buckfastleigh meeting. But it takes a lot to deter real “pointing” folk and although heavy rain was expected later in the day, with the prospect of a much improved forecast for Sunday they battled on with good humour, vowing to be up early Sunday to finish off the “cosmetics”, bins, banners and bogs, not forgetting the flags for the finish line!

As forecast, the wind and rain has already abated this evening (9pm), so rest assured we intend to be all ready to welcome you to our Course tomorrow, be it to race a pony or pointer, or just to enjoy the spectacle and a flutter, but tip for the day, do wear stout footwear – it is March after all!

I will post an up to date Buckfastleigh Going Report as soon as one is available to me tomorrow and I look forward to seeing you all there.

Thursday, 14 March at 21:54

Local BHA Course Inspector, Claire Wonnacott , walked the course with our Clerk of the Course, John Bond this afternoon and declared the Going at Buckfastleigh to be soft. Rain and strong winds are forecast for Saturday, quietening on Sunday to a moderate breeze.

Please note: On race day arrival, Horse boxes to be parked up in the lorry park but horses must remain boxed until the Horse’s Passport and Health Declaration documents have been presented to the Declarations Desk for inspection before authorisation to unload can be given.

Thursday, 14 March

At 6pm yesterday, The Clerk of the Course reported the Going at Buckfastleigh was Soft. Now we are into March the ground is drying much quicker than in February and the Course walked very well, with a good covering of grass and the fences all moved to fresh ground, as have been the bends. Today, heavy morning rain early on has been replaced by more showery weather and strong winds, with similar forecast for Friday. A further report on the Going and outlook for race day will follow tomorrow afternoon.

Tuesday, 12th March

Buckfastleigh – This afternoon the Clerk of the Course reported the Going to be Soft but it has been a sunny, windy day and preparations for racing are progressing well.

Friday 8th March

The Buckfastleigh Clerk of the Course reported this morning, Friday 8th March, that the Preliminary Going at Buckfastleigh is Good to Soft, Soft in Places. More posts to follow regularly from mid week on. DVSPH PtP Secretary.

Pony racing, which is sponsored by Salcombe Dairy Ice Cream precedes the main race card with two pony races commencing at 12 noon.

Preview: Torrington Farmers Point-To-Point, Chapelton Barton, Near Umberleigh, North Devon, Saturday 16th June 2018

Written by: Donna Harris

This Saturday will see the final Point-to-Point of the season take place at Umberleigh where the Torrington Farmers will host their meeting on 16th June. There is always a great party atmosphere, where crowds will gather to watch the final six races of the season, after which there will be three pony races to close the event. The area champions will then be crowned and trophies presented.  Over 90 entries have been received for the main card which starts at 2pm.

The Davisons-sponsored  Men’s Open race could see reigning champion jockey Will Biddick score here on his fathers There’s No Panic who won at this track last season. They could have some strong competition to deal with in five times winner this season Spencer Moon ,for jockey Byron Moorcroft if they can defy top weight, also Alex Edwards on Rockinrolldixie who used to be with the Dean Summersby team. Rockinrolldixie now with Cotswold trainer Diana Ralph, was on a roll when winning at both the Bredwardine and Maismore tracks this season, but then refused to race at Chaddesley Corbett on his next outing. He would need to be on his best form here, but he does go well for jockey Alex Edwards, who is leading the National Mens Championship.

The Ladies Open which is sponsored by Nancekivell & Co, could see jockey Gina Andrews take the ride on There’s No Panic if not going in the Mens race earlier. Gina Andrews is soon to be crowned National Ladies Champion, currently holding joint second place is Isabel Marshall who could have either of the two Alan Hill-trained entries as an option, in Man Of Steel a winner of six this season including a Hunter Chase at Cartmel, and recent runner up at Peper Harow and Edgcot According To Trev . The Francesca Nimmo-trained Darksen and Rendevous Peak  are also to be respected if turning up here for current joint leading  National Lady Novice jockey Alice Stevens to ride.

Tattersalls, Ireland sponsor the opening Members race  which could go the way of Culverwell, a recent one length runner up at Upcott, for the Teresa Clark team under jockey Will Biddick, who although looks to have lost his National Mens title will take the Devon & Cornwall Area title.  Le Clo De La Londe must be respected, a winner here last season for the in form trainer Stuart Sampson, here with the booking of Emma Watson to ride.

Kivells  sponsor the Restricted race in which several outside raiders could turn up including Gowell a Llwyn Ddu winner and runner-up at Brampton Maden and Upcott,  trained and ridden by Byron Moorcroft. Charm Park winner Euro Bond for trainer Joe Tickle, Garthorpe Maiden winner Desert Retreat for the Alan Hill team and Upcott maiden winner Sweet Lady Jane for trainer Kieran Price.

Claire Howarth of the Barum Stud sponsors the Intermediate race in which a suggestions are Peper Harow winner Stage One  (Alan Hill), and Bredwardine winner on good to firm Free Scorpion, another out of the Byron Moorcroft yard. Joey The Kangaroo out of Ledbury trainer Julie Mansell’s yard, could be another to make a journey down to the course and follow up on his nine-length win at the Edcote earlier this month, where he left Free Scorpion back 23 lengths in fourth and would deserve favouritism here.

The Open Maiden being sponsored by Smallridge Brother Ltd has recent Upcott Cross runner up Buckboru entered for trainer Laura Young. Buckboru battled on gamely at Upcott to finish a head second. Here Comes Molly has clocked up two seconds for trainer Tracey Barfoot-Saint. Rockabay is another which could run well for Joe Tickle, and any market support for debutant The Boola Bee for trainer owner/trainer/jockey Kieran Buckley would be worth following.

On course facilities include hot food and refreshments, beer tent, bookies and a large number of trade stands. Entrance to the course is £10 per person to a max of £40 per car. Under 16’s go free and dogs welcome but must be on a lead at all times. The course is located at Chapleton, Umberleigh. On A377, 5m SE of Barnstaple – EX37 9EB.
