GRANVILLE’S BETTING GOSSIP – SPOONERS & WEST DARTMOOR – CHERRYBROOK 3RD APRIL 2016

Website_Money_Talks_SWD16

Another weekend – another soaking. It doesn’t matter whether it is Cornwall or Devon, the mud looks and tastes the same.

This time it was the edge of Dartmoor where Mr Spooner’s hunt operates. The course is slightly familiar – it is around the opposite fields to where the Lamerton took place two weeks ago. However Cherrybrook is a roller coaster of a ride with the local mud coating the course like a chocolate cake on this occasion.

The Opening offer of 1-4 about Dicky Bob in the Hunt Race was quickly snapped up by the big hitters, and the grey was sent off at 11-2 on. He enjoyed the cake walk never looked in danger after his seven weeks lay off under Jo Buck.

Jo’s other winner It’s All Or Nothing was easy to back in the Intermediate, drifting from 6-4 to 9-4. Shannan Star was the one for money in this race (9-4 to 7-4), whereas the favourite On Alberts Head went from 4-6 to 6-4.  It’s All or Nothing won easily. His Buckfastleigh form was obviously wrong and he is better judged on his Stratford hunter chase third last season. He will score again.

Winter Garden was a surprising favourite (3’s to 5-2) in the 12 runner Restricted. He ran as if in need of the race and will do better next time. Betty’s Boy (4’s to 3’s) was still in with a chance when crashing with his novice rider two out and can be forgiven after taking a wide course for most of the trip. Sucker Punch was cut from 12’s to 6’s but was always trailing and has not come up to expectations so far. The winner Spillers Dream (3’s to 7-2) is from an in form yard and was always going well for Darren Edwards. He trotted up despite an awkward jump at the last.

The Mixed Open turned into a two horse contest. Jepeck (1-2 to 2-5) travelled like a dream and won as he liked. The runner up King of Alcatraz (9-4 to 5-2) ran creditably on unsuitable ground for him and will be of interest when the ground dries up.

Mic’s Delight (4’s to 6’s) had run a stinker at the Lamerton, but this useful ex-chaser was on his best form here. His novice rider lost her iron at the last but she was able to push him out to hold the threat of Darren Edwards on the progressive Robin De Souza, whose jumping let him down (4-7 after touching 1-2 and 4-6). Flying Award was backed from 5-2 to 6-4 in a weak market but lost touch after half way.

I was annoyed that I did not back Vila Cova in the Maiden. My own loose-leaf form book comment of his unplaced Wadebridge run on 7th February said “looks capable of better.” Somebody can run faster than me and he was backed from a juicy 3’s into 5-2. He only got up in the last few strides to beat a gallant effort from Gold Relief who had no friends from 6’s out to 14’s.

Lose your dash – lose your cash as the saying goes.
