Mid Devon P2P, Black Forest Lodge Pony Racing Preview and entries, 1 Feb 2015

Website_MDPonies_Banner

The pony racing season in the Devon and Cornwall area kicks off on February 1 at the Mid Devon point to point at Black Forest Lodge. Bumper entries have been received and both races look likely to be fascinating contests.

The 138 race is off at 11am and there are 10 entries. Local riders who spectators will already know include Chad Bament, Walter Fisher-Barnett and national Racetech 138 points champion Tamby Welch, the latter on a new pony, Churchill. Hamish Clarke from the Wessex area has Talponciau Perfect Print entered and there are plenty of visiting ponies and riders to ensure a fast and furious pace.

The 148s are off at 11.20am and riders there include William Cox on Shotgun Minnie, Conor Brace on Don’t Tell Dai, Thomasina Eyston on Springs. James Armstrong and Tamby Welch have their first 148 rides on Igo Zuminov and Vadlawalkover respectively. Nine go to post.

Lots of jockeys have now come through the pony racing ranks and it is a great opportunity to see some stars of the future hone their skills.

If you are interested in having a go, come along and watch and, be assured, you do not need a speedy racing pony to get started. A fit hunting pony is fine and all the riders started out on their pony club ponies. If you get together with your friends, you would be able to have a race within a race at your local hunt meeting. For more details of the first time rider scheme, contact area organiser Kelvin Heard on 07595 651700.

Preview: Devon & Cornwall pony racing finals

The Devon and Cornwall pony racing season comes to an end at the Torrington Farmers point to point with two races which will incorporate the area finals.

Both races will be hotly contested. There is a full house in the 138 race which will see the top ponies in the area take on The Jobs Not Straight and Tyler Heard from Cornwall who will be bidding for their first area championship – the pony having only started racing in England this season.

Tamby Welch will be eager to add maximum points to his tally on Angelic – he currently leads the 138 points series (The Jobs Not Straight has been running successfully in the Charles Owen racecourse series) – having run in more point to point pony races in the area and will face strong opposition from Fergus Gillard on Veno Star and Hamish Clarke on Talponciau Perfect Print. Ben Godfrey on Mocking Bird, Ben Cox on Diptford Moonwalker will be pushing for a win and look out for Chad Bament who only started pony racing this season. He has made great strides on Ginger Wizard and the pair will be suited by the sharp course. Luca Morgan on Milly and Lewis McDonald on Mini Tango complete the line up for what should prove to be a really competitive race.

The 148s will also be fast and furious. William Cox will be hoping for a good run from the Welch’s Total Eclipse and faces opposition from Welsh raider Conor Brace on Peateoh, Oliuvis Weatherlake on Aries, who beat Total Eclipse at Bratton, Theo Gillard on Hawksfield Flyer and current area points leader Thomasina Eyston on Springs.

Goldwells Gucci has been running well in the Charles Owen series for Harriet Godfrey, Ben Jones has had recent success on former Devon and Cornwall are pony Miss Mopsy and Michael Treneer will be hoping for a good run from Roy Boy Green.

This is the shortest of the series races so form on the longer courses of Upcott, Stafford Cross and Bratton Down may not hold up.

As the Devon and Cornwall area pony racing at the Torrington Farmers meeting is this year being run as an open race, the area finals will be contested within the race by those qualified, therefore the area champion will be the first qualified rider past the post, who will also receive the trophy in both the 138 and the 148 race.

Rosettes, prizes and T shirts will be awarded to the actual winners, placed ponies and all runners. Area finals rosettes will be awarded to qualified riders in order of finishing

Ponies who have qualified to run in the D and C final – by virtue of having run at least twice in the area prior to the final (D and C ponies automatically qualify) ; Wee Anthony, Veno Star, Talponciau Perfect Print; The Jobs Not Straight; Angelic; My Golden Dream; Bronze Lawrance; Shammi; Wide Valley March; Menedh Jumping Jack Flash; Ginger Wizard; Milly; Minky; Dinky By Design.

148: Total Eclipse; Springs; Plym Steps; Derwent Dream Dancer; Tarka, Aries; Roy Boy Green; Calypso; Goldwells Gucci; Frantic Fox; Hawksfield Flyer

Riders and ponies qualify as a combination.
