REPORT: STEVENSTONE POINT-TO-POINT AT VAUTERHILL, HIGH BICKINGTON, BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY 4TH MAY 2015

Website_SV_Report_Banner
WRITTEN BY DONNA HARRIS

A good crowd were treated to some exciting finishes at the Stevenstone Point-to-Point meeting at Vauterhill on Bank Holiday Monday where the heavy rain stayed away until after the last race.
The open ditch was omitted throughout the afternoon, resulting in some very quick times.

Leanda Tickle winning the Jockey Club Mares Maiden on Triggywinkle for trainer Rod Chelton

Some new training faces were seen in the area, with trainer Rod Chelton’s Triggywinkle scoring under Leanda Tickle, in the Jockey Club’s Mares Maiden Race. Now based at North Petherton in Somerset the delighted trainer stated “She is a mare we bred in France before we moved back to England, and now the only one I have in training, and I am helped by Ruth Tilsley-Baker.”

Just Seven provided favourite backers with a win in the opening members race. Under jockey Vicky Wade, Just Seven made virtually all to win by ten lengths. Owner/trainer Roy Smith bought the horse in Ireland four years ago. “He had a good run, he is a big horse and has just come into himself, it is a family affair and I ride him out daily.” stated the trainer.

The Restricted race was won with a fine tactical ride by promising jockey Jake Bament on Peterbrown, Templestatefloresco and Templeton threw down challenges at the second last but Bament switched Peterbrown to the inside and held on to win by a neck in a thrilling finish. Trained by Karyn Heard who was delighted with his run, she stated that “Peterbrown found the ground at Upcott Cross too soft for him, he is young and progressive.” Owner Sally White was delighted ” It is magic when you have a winner, his second this season.”

Parkam Jack gave trainer Kayley Woollacott her 21st winner of the season, when taking the Mixed Open. The winner travelled well, coming home ten lengths ahead of Welstonedruid. Jockey Jamie Thomas, having just ridden his 17th winner of the season quoted “I turned down the back straight and just gave him a squeeze and he took off. It is my best season ever.”

David Noonan on It's All Or Nothing and Leanda Tickle on Swansbrook race into the finishing straight.

Four lined up for the Confined race, in which odds on favourite It’s All Or Nothing demonstrated a good style of jumping to fend off his main challenger Swansbrook to the delight of his owner Rob White. Trained by Charlotte Rowe who stated, “He just gets better and better, and is so easy to do at home.” The champagne corks are bound to be popping at The Blacksmiths Arms, owned by Rob White, who stated “I am looking forward to It’s All Or Nothing’s Restricted entry at Stratford which he qualified for previously, we will see how he comes out of this race first.”

Heidi Lewis rides Pasternak Jack to victory in the Intermediate race.

The Woollacott team saddled two of the three runners contesting the Intermediate race, with King Kash heading out the odds on favourite under Jamie Thomas. However it was young Heidi Lewis who set the pace in front on Pasternak Jack, coming home five lengths ahead of the late challenging Hallo Dolly, with King Kash three lengths back in third. Trainer Kayley Woollacott gave all credit to Heidi, “She works full time for us, and puts in over and above working 24/7 on her days off too, showing real dedication.”

David Noonan rode a patient ride in the nine runner Open Maiden race, steering home The Persuader to get up to win by five lengths from Thirtyfirst Dansar. Trainer Caroline Prouse was delighted with her first winner in her own colours. “David gave him a peach of a ride, and made up so much ground. We bought him from Doncaster two years ago, he is a big backward sort, but showed lots of promise last year at Bratton.”

PREVIEW: STEVENSTONE POINT-TO-POINT AT VAUTERHILL ON BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY, 4th MAY 2015

Website_SV_Preview_BannerWritten by: Donna Harris

The Stevenstone meeting at Vauterhill, High Bickington, offers a great way to enjoy the scenic countryside on Bank Holiday Monday May 4th. This fixture now has seven races on offer which start with the Lomas family-sponsored Members race at 2pm, which is in memory of Major Jack & Mrs Margaret Lomas. Entries include Just Seven from the Roy Smith yard, looking to follow up on their five lengths second at Littlewindsor. Ahh Bless, trained by Carol Lawrence is another to consider, having been in the frame on two of his outings this season when third at Buckfastleigh and Great Trethew.

Davisons Chartered Accountants-sponsored Restricted race looks very competitive, two of the recent Sarah Prouse-trained winners are entered, Beetle Jack and Cracking Habit both won their maiden races at Upcott Cross, with Cracking Habit clocking up a quick time under jockey Darren Edwards. Templeton from Kayley Woollacotts team ran a good one length second in a 16 runner Restricted at Kilworthy, and Gleannacreim for Charlotte Hawker conections is another to have run well in Restricted company.

In the Holiday Cottages-sponsored Mixed open, Steeltown, another from the Woollacott team, has already has his nose in front this season, winning his race by 22 lengths at Cotley. Welstonedruid is another who could run well after his break since winning at Great Trethew in March.

Jepeck is currently on four wins out of six starts, his latest win came at Upcott Cross, he should run well here in the Kivells-sponsored Confined race. Minella Web, also from the Woollacott team took his Intermediate race at Kilworthy in March in a notably quick time and could be the bookies favourite.

In the Wades-sponsored Intermediate race, Hallo Dolly is an interesting entry, having been off the track for two years, she was in the frame on all six of her starts up until then, including two wins at Trebudannon. Both King Kash after his second to Diamond Brook at Cherrybrook, and Pasternak Jack after his recent Flete Park win under jockey Heidi Lewis could head the field.

Suggestions in the Brewer Harding & Rowe-sponsored Open Maiden race are Whatastormnorm after his notable second and third at the Great Trethew meetings, also entry High Priority from the Keith Cumings team, having scored a four-length second behind Applesolutely at Flete Park.

The final race of the day, is the Jockey Club Mares Maiden race, which is being run in memory of Jane Wickett. Reuben Chapman’s horses have been running well this season, and this race could see Onwegoagain follow up on his recent second to Annwyl at Upcott Cross.

On course facilities are hot refreshments, bar, bookies and trade stands.

The course is located at High Bickington (signed from A377,A3124 & B3217) Post code EX37 9BT. Entrance is £10 car & driver, £20 car driver and passenger, £30 per car load, under sixteens go free.

Preview: Four Burrow Point-To-Point, Trebudannon, nr St. Columb Major, Easter Monday, 6th April 2015

Written by Donna Harris
The second of the Point-to-Point meetings over the Easter weekend takes place at Trebudannon, where it is the turn of the Fourburrow to host their event on Bank Holiday Monday April 6, start time 1pm. This course is popular with its natural amphitheatre style providing fantastic viewing. They have eight races on offer including the Bonhams Cornish National Men’s Open race, attracting entries such as Chapoturgeon from the Jack Barber team who was a National Hunt Festival winner. Posh Totty from the same yard is another entry bang in form, having been in the frame on all 12 of her last starts. The prolific winning mare Lucette Annie is also entered, as is Bradley Brook, both hold strong claims if not running at Cherrybrook on Saturday.

The Members race, sponsored by A.G.Prowse heads up the action. Previous course winner Reliable Richie is the pick of the three Reuben Chapman entries, who could improve on his third behind Silver Token and Mic’s Delight at Buckfastleigh.

The Open Maiden has already been divided, Miss Weld ran second here last season, she loves the soft and goes well for young jockey Pippa Glanville. Boyman is another entry with a previous second at this course under jockey Conor Smith.

In the second division of the Open Maiden, Ryalzaro trained by Jack Barber, ran close at Larkhill in January finishing second under Will Biddick. Mount Prospex for the Jill Dennis team would be the one to fear if connections choose this race over Cherrybrook entry, after his head second at Kilworthy.

Mic’s Delight could put claims on the Truro Tractors-sponsored Confined race, having been in the frame on all of his starts this season for owner/trainer/jockey Jennifer Davenport. He loves the soft, likes to keep his head in front as he showed when winning at Ottery. Knight Pass for the Nikki Frost yard and Devon General for Kayley Woollacott could be the ones to chase him home.

The Ladies Open race is sponsored by Carrs Landrover Truro, in which Minella Fifty could score again here after his recent win at Milborne St Andrew, when sent off odds on favourite, for the Claire Hitch team. Sweet My Lord connections will be looking for a hat-trick after his two wins at Wadebridge, and was running well at Kilworthy until falling.

The Restricted race is a qualifier for the Subaru Restricted Point-to-Point series final to be held at Stratford racecourse on Friday 29th May,  in which entries include On Your Max, who has been knocking at the door for a Restricted win. Templeton was only just denied a win under Jamie Thomas when caught in the final 150 yards by winner Sonoftheking. Im All Set, from the Claire Hitch yard, who won his Maiden at Ston Easton at the second time of asking under Will Biddick. This race is sponsored by Tremaine Plant Hire.

Lamanva Brood Mares sponsor the three mile Open Maiden race, Judge John Deed could make his debut Point run here for the Barber family, who have a good strike rate with maiden horses at this course. Arny and Up To Ollie both ran well at the Kilworthy meeting and should improve for the run.

The course at Trebudannon is located at St Columb Major, signed off A30 and A39. Postcode TR9 4LP. Entrance to the course is £10 per person to a max of £30 per car. Children under 16 free. On course facilities include bar, bookies, trade stands and hot refreshments.

GRANVILLE’S BETTING GOSSIP – LAMERTON POINT-TO-POINT AT KILWORTHY 22ND MARCH 2015

Website_Money_Talks_Banner_Lamerton

The form held up well at sunny Kilworthy with success for four clear favourites and two second favourites. Punters certainly had the edge during the afternoon and one regular backer found the first seven winners on the eight-race card. On the downside his wife now wants a holiday out of it.

Although RACEY LACEY (5-4 to 6-4) let her backers down in the opening Hunt race, it wasn’t long until the books took a pounding.

DOYEN DYNAMO (solid 6-4 fav) confirmed his Didmarton promise in the first Maiden under a patient ride from Danny Burton. STEEL BRUSH (3’s out to 5’s) was not wanted in the ring but this good looking ex-Irish pointer caught the eye on his British debut to chase the winner home and looks a winner in waiting.

The other division of the Open Maiden had to be divided on the day. WINTER SOLDIER (15-8 fav touched 2’s) just got the better of MOUNT PROSPEX (4 -1) in a driving finish to the first section in the fastest Maiden time of the day.

PETERBROWN (5-4 out to 7-4 fav) has experience under rules and his creditable second to Dicky Bob at Buckfastleigh gave him the form edge in the final maiden. The Karyn Heard trained seven-year-old jumped well and duly obliged under young Jake Bament.

So far so good, but if every favourite won the bookies would be out of business and sure enough the Mixed Open put a stop to the party. The popular South Devon gelding DOUBLE BANK (4-7 – 4-6) made a bold bid to dominate the race but was just caught by LOOSE PREFORMER (9’s to 10’s) on the gruelling final climb.

DICKY BOB is fast becoming a Devon & Cornwall star and the eight-year-old stepped up to Confined company under Jo Buck to record his fourth successive victory. The popular grey was sent off 4-5 fav.

SONOFTHEKING (3’S to 4’S) started second favourite for the 16-runner Restricted under in-form jockey Darren Edwards. He looked held approaching the last, but overhauled the 14-1 outsider TEMPLETON close home. Third placed IT’S ALL OR NOTHING was nibbled at from 14’s to 10’s and can win a Restricted.

The queues for ice cream had subsided when the flag was dropped for the final event at 6 o’clock, but there was plenty of activity in the ring. A few decent bets were seen for FOURSTAR RIVER whose odds rapidly contracted from 8-1 to 5-2. ACCORDING TO HARRY (7-4 fav) was also strongly supported having been laid to the early skirmishers at 7-2. In the end these well backed horses could only fill the places behind the Kayley Woollacott trained MINELLA WEB who was easy to back at around 6’s and 7’s.
