PREVIEW OF LAMERTON POINT-TO-POINT AT KILWORTHY SUNDAY 20TH MARCH 2016

Website_Preview_Banner_L16

WRITTEN BY GRANVILLE TAYLOR

The scenic course location at Kilworthy near Brentor, is where the Lamerton will be hosting their Point-to-Point horse racing fixture next Sunday March 20th. This is one of the oldest courses in England where the old turf there has seen racing since 1925. There are six races on offer with a total of 83 entries and a start time of 1pm opening with the Pannell Commercials Lamerton Members’ race.

The 11 entries for this race are headed by Robin De Souza, unbeaten in four races this season for the Lifton yard of Dean Summersby. The same trainer looks to hold the key to this race with Printing Blue and Mausefalle as useful back ups

The Yvonne Watson Memorial Open Maiden has attracted 23 entries. Micky Stark and The Conjurer each ran well at Ottery and Meldon Express and Vila Cova have shown promise.

The Condy Mathias sponsored Mixed Open looks really competitive. Hunter chase winner Parkam Jack and the ultra consistent Kirkleigh each have to carry penalties so it would be interesting if the highly progressive Master Baker took a step up in class to test these more experienced pointers receiving weight.

Robin De Souza is also engaged in the Confined sponsored by Hunts Dawn West DevonReliable Richie and Flying Award could form the main opposition.

In the Tinhay Building Supplies Ltd restricted, Darkgesture created a favourable impression when winning at Black Forest and other Maiden winners Creative Inerta and On Alberts Head are capable of winning in this class.

The concluding Exeter Racecourse Intermediate Series qualifier has 13 entries. Ottery St Mary trainer Ed Walker is in great form and recent winners Doyen Dynamo and The Flying Doc look ready to score in this class. They will be tested by Ces Mitford-Slade’s selected of Applesolutely and Winter Soldier who look sure to progress further.

This is a fabulous family day out for all to enjoy with exciting racing at this popular picnic track on Dartmoor.

On course facilities include hot food and refreshments, bar, bookies and trade stands. Entrance to the course is £10 per person up to a maximum of £30 per car. Children under 16 free. Pedestrians £10. Dogs on leads welcome.

Course is located at Kilworthy nr Brentor. Postcode PL19 0JX

GRANVILLE’S BETTING GOSSIP – EAST DEVON POINT-TO-POINT, BISHOPS COURT, 5TH MARCH 2016

Website_Money_Talks_2016

Four successful odds-on favourites kept the bookies dipping into their satchels at Ottery St Mary on a mercifully dry afternoon.

Kirkleigh (1-2 from 4-7) got favourite backers off to a good start in the Hunt race. This soft ground specialist was visiting the winner’s enclosure for the third time this season and sauntered home after his three rivals failed to finish. Last year’s Hunt race winner Delphi Mountain (2’s to 7-4) was pressing the winner when crashing out through the wing of the third last. Sucker Punch (6’s to 4’s) had run better than his finishing position suggests at the Western meeting last month, but was tired and had lost touch when unseating his rider two out on this occasion. He once changed hands for £105,000 but had been off the course for two years before his Wadebridge run. Bought for a modest sum by his current connections, this nicely bred seven-year-old is worth keeping an eye on

Blazing Whale (4-5 to 4-6) and Ohio Gold (4’s to 5’s) had a lengthy private battle in the closing stages of the Mixed Open after Batu Ferringhi (5’s to 9-2) had set a very strong pace in the testing conditions. The favourite was coming back from a rather disappointing run at Buckfastleigh, but carried his penalty with honour here, just holding off Ohio Gold.

Will Biddick was made to work hard on Blazing Whale, and also had to be at his strongest to persuade Earthpower (4-6 from 4-5) to see off the game Pauls Conn (solid at 5-2) to win the Restricted. Earthpower had won his Maiden on this track last season and evidently relishes soft ground. Printing Blue (8’s / 15-2) was running on at the finish. He is capable of winning in this grade.

I was slow off the mark and missed evens about Master Baker, who hardened to 4-6 and won the Intermediate as he liked. Follow The Paint (2-1) was the only other horse seriously backed in the seven strong field. This mare, unbeaten in her two previous races this season, lacked fluency at the jumps and was eased once her chance had gone.

Maller Tree (5-2) was a useful performer in his day under rules, winning seven times over hurdles plus a bumper at Bellewstown. He looks the ideal schoolmaster and duly provided Chris Wald with his first winner in the Novice Riders’ contest. Flying Award (5-2 to 2-1) was sent off favourite and came from a long way off the pace to finish second. Fiulin (3’s – 11-4) ran his usual game race to finish third.

Rob Stoneman rode his first winner thanks to Arcs Abound (SP 100-30) after being put in at a ridiculously short price in the younger horse Maiden. His dam Winter Scene was a prolific pointing winner for the Gardners’. Runner up Micky Stark (6’s to 13-2) is on the upgrade. His dam (from the family of Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Imperial Call), won a point-to-point at Cherrybrook. Eddies Pearl ((8’s to 9-2) was the only other finisher. She was too keen early on and can improve. Vila Cova (7-2 to 9-4) started favourite and was making headway when falling four out. Another short priced runner here was Meldon Express (7-2) who was unlucky when his rider was knocked out of the saddle by an early faller.

There was only a neck between the winner Upto Ollie (3’s out to 5’s, touched 11-2) and The Conjurer (6-4 out to 9-4 fav) in the concluding Maiden. The Conjurer couldn’t quite do the trick after heading the winner momentarily after the last.

At 6pm, the Clerk of the Course gave me the following Going update. “The Going at Buckfastleigh is Soft, Heavy in Places.  The course is in great shape and with a dry forecast for tomorrow we are looking forward to a good day’s racing.”

Eileen Ashby, PtP Secretary, DVSPH

Friday, 19 February 2016

“At 3.15pm today, the Clerk of the Course reported that the Local BHA Course Inspector, Clare Wonnacott, had walked the course this afternoon and called the Going Soft, Heavy in Places. Some rain is forecast for tomorrow , Saturday, but importantly, it is a dry forecast for race day on Sunday.”

We are all geared up to race – track fully prepared, barrier netting now up, catering marquee up, race cards collected, toilets on site and the Admin Barn only awaiting the”feminine touch” from the lady “Dec. team” and me!. A few cosmetics on Saturday, bins, banners and flags and we are ready for action on Sunday. Wrap up warm and come join us!

Eileen Ashby, DVSPH PtP Secretary

Thursday, 18 February 2016

This evening, the Clerk of the Course reported to me that as of late afternoon today the Going at Buckfastleigh is Soft, Heavy in Places. The course has shrugged off yesterdays heavy rain and most of it would ride soft or better. Further rain is forecast for Friday and Local Course Inspector, Clare Wonnacott, is due to visit to walk the course. A further update will follow tomorrow evening.

Eileen Ashby, DVSPH PtP Secretary

Notified at 8.15pm, Wednesday 17 February 2016

“After a day of persistently heavy rainfall, the Going at Buckfastleigh is Heavy, Soft in Places. A mostly dry day is forecast for tomorrow and a further report will be posted tomorrow evening”.

Eileen Ashby, DVSPH PtP Secretary.

Tuesday 16th February 2016

Today has been another fine day at Buckfastleigh and work parties have been busy at the Course adding finishing touches to the track and converting the inside of the big Barn into the Admin. centre for the meeting.

The Clerk of the Course reported to me this evening the Going is now “Good to Soft, Soft and Heavy in Places“.  Car parking areas have dried very well and are now fit for all vehicles, there is ample hard standing for horse-boxes in the lorry park and all vehicles exit the course downhill via a hard track to the bottom gate.

Approximately 12 ml of rain is forecast for tomorrow with a further dry day on Thursday; another update will be posted tomorrow evening.

Eileen Ashby, DVSPH PtP Secretary

Monday 15th February 2016

“This afternoon the Clerk of the Course reported that after a
sunny, drying day the Going at Buckfastleigh is Soft, Heavy in Places.”
