At 6pm, the Clerk of the Course gave me the following Going update. “The Going at Buckfastleigh is Soft, Heavy in Places.  The course is in great shape and with a dry forecast for tomorrow we are looking forward to a good day’s racing.”

“At 3.15pm today, the Clerk of the Course reported that the Local BHA Course Inspector, Clare Wonnacott, had walked the course this afternoon and called the Going Soft, Heavy in Places. Some rain is forecast for tomorrow , Saturday, but importantly, it is a dry forecast for race day on Sunday.”

We are all geared up to race – track fully prepared, barrier netting now up, catering marquee up, race cards collected, toilets on site and the Admin Barn only awaiting the”feminine touch” from the lady “Dec. team” and me!. A few cosmetics on Saturday, bins, banners and flags and we are ready for action on Sunday. Wrap up warm and come join us!

Thursday, 18 February 2016

This evening, the Clerk of the Course reported to me that as of late afternoon today the Going at Buckfastleigh is Soft, Heavy in Places. The course has shrugged off yesterdays heavy rain and most of it would ride soft or better. Further rain is forecast for Friday and Local Course Inspector, Clare Wonnacott, is due to visit to walk the course. A further update will follow tomorrow evening.

Eileen Ashby, DVSPH PtP Secretary

Notified at 8.15pm, Wednesday 17 February 2016

“After a day of persistently heavy rainfall, the Going at Buckfastleigh is Heavy, Soft in Places. A mostly dry day is forecast for tomorrow and a further report will be posted tomorrow evening”.

Eileen Ashby, DVSPH PtP Secretary.

Tuesday 16th February 2016

Today has been another fine day at Buckfastleigh and work parties have been busy at the Course adding finishing touches to the track and converting the inside of the big Barn into the Admin. centre for the meeting.

The Clerk of the Course reported to me this evening the Going is now “Good to Soft, Soft and Heavy in Places“.  Car parking areas have dried very well and are now fit for all vehicles, there is ample hard standing for horse-boxes in the lorry park and all vehicles exit the course downhill via a hard track to the bottom gate.

Approximately 12 ml of rain is forecast for tomorrow with a further dry day on Thursday; another update will be posted tomorrow evening.

Eileen Ashby, DVSPH PtP Secretary

GRANVILLE’S BETTING GOSSIP – DULVERTON WEST POINT-TO-POINT AT BRATTON DOWN 17TH MAY 2015

Website_BD_DW_Money_Talks_Banner

The 88 runners at Bratton Down vastly overshadowed the number of runners at the other seven British point-to-point fixtures at the weekend (Clifton-On Teme could only muster a turn out of 24)

So the scene was set for plenty of betting activity and punters soon got down to action. It was surprising to see The Persuader backed from 8’s into 3-1 fav for the opener, presumably on the strength of his Stevenstone maiden win. He was soon struggling in the rear and the grey seemed ill at ease before Bryony Frost pulled him up at the 15th fence.  Nothing could stop record seeking Will Biddick, who would not be denied on course winner Bernshaw (9-2 touched 5’s), locally trained by Claire Hitch. Golden Squirrel (10-1) has been knocking at the door in this class recently and ran on really well to finish second.

There was a very tight finish to the first section of the Bob Pittard Memorial Maiden. Bob would have relished the result as Highland Thistle in first time blinkers became the longest price winner of the season in the area. His previous form figures of ppppp did not exactly inspire confidence and resulted in a 66-1 SP return. Nevertheless the sturdy chestnut won on merit and battled on gamely up the hill to hold the promising Looking For Mick (20s to 16’s) and the well fancied Barber debutant Drift Wood (6-4 to 5-4).

Bugsie Malone (5-4 to evens) retrieved £170 of his 80,000 euros purchase price in the second Maiden division after a spirited battle with The Mystro (9-2 touched 5’s). Biddick needed all of his guile to get Bugsie Malone home in front, but the Mahler youngster was very green and we can expect significant improvement.

Bellflower Boy was solid at 13-2 / 7-1 in the four miles Mixed Open. Bryony Frost timed her challenge to perfection, coming from fourth to first in a sweeping run up the hill to gain a head verdict over Cecile De Volanges (5-2 from 3’s). Both had good recent winning form over four miles. Connections have left the headgear off the winner in his recent races and this tough old campaigner can never be dismissed. Third placed Right Enough (16-1) seems to be running into form and might pick up a race before the end of the season.

Otis Tarda was given a vintage Biddick ride to win the Intermediate. Despite drifting out to 10-1 the winner cruised to the front on a tight rein approaching the final fence. He eventually held on by a neck in a driving finish with Fourstar River (4-1), after carrying his rival to the right inside the last 150 yards.

I thought that Queens Bay (Will Biddick) would be my bet of the day in the last race. Despite being absent from the track for nearly a year this classy mare opened at only 5-4 before closing in to evens. I cannot run fast enough these days so missed the cream of the odds. She won of course so well done Will Biddick – what a day.

GRANVILLE’S BETTING GOSSIP – STEVENSTONE POINT-TO-POINT, VAUTERHILL 4TH MAY 2015

Website_SV_Money_Talks_Banner

Comments for the Bank Holiday Monday meeting have been kindly supplied by bookmaker David Phillips

The Members’ was won by Just Seven touched 4/6, well backed into 1/2.

An excellent Restricted won by Peterbrown, opened 2/1 drifted before being backed at 7/2
.
The Mixed Open betting was mainly between the eventual winner Parkam Jack 4/6 into 1/2 and Welstonedruid laid by myself heavily at 2/1 into 6/4, nothing for the other runners.

It’s All or Nothing won a good race for the Confined at around 4/6 with Swansbrook backed at 9/4.

The three runner intermediate attracted money for all three: King Kash was around 5/4 and good money for the winner Pasternak Jack at 2/1.There was a large amount of money on Hallo Dolly from 7/2 into 11/4. The mare ran a promising race in second on her first run for over 12 months.

In a very open Maiden race Astral Star was heavily backed at 8/1 into 5/2.The winner, The Persuader, was very well backed at 6/1 into 3/1.

The Mares Maiden was won by Triggywinkle at a mainly unpacked 14/1, a relief for the layers as other results had gone against them. This race saw the Tim Whitley owned and Les Jefford trained Queens Law drift from evens out to 3/1, which was not surprising as the horse ran a shocker and never gave her supporters a chance.

REPORT: STEVENSTONE POINT-TO-POINT AT VAUTERHILL, HIGH BICKINGTON, BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY 4TH MAY 2015

Website_SV_Report_Banner
WRITTEN BY DONNA HARRIS

A good crowd were treated to some exciting finishes at the Stevenstone Point-to-Point meeting at Vauterhill on Bank Holiday Monday where the heavy rain stayed away until after the last race.
The open ditch was omitted throughout the afternoon, resulting in some very quick times.

Leanda Tickle winning the Jockey Club Mares Maiden on Triggywinkle for trainer Rod Chelton
Leanda Tickle winning the Jockey Club Mares Maiden on Triggywinkle for trainer Rod Chelton

Some new training faces were seen in the area, with trainer Rod Chelton’s Triggywinkle scoring under Leanda Tickle, in the Jockey Club’s Mares Maiden Race. Now based at North Petherton in Somerset the delighted trainer stated “She is a mare we bred in France before we moved back to England, and now the only one I have in training, and I am helped by Ruth Tilsley-Baker.”

Just Seven provided favourite backers with a win in the opening members race. Under jockey Vicky Wade, Just Seven made virtually all to win by ten lengths. Owner/trainer Roy Smith bought the horse in Ireland four years ago. “He had a good run, he is a big horse and has just come into himself, it is a family affair and I ride him out daily.” stated the trainer.

The Restricted race was won with a fine tactical ride by promising jockey Jake Bament on Peterbrown, Templestatefloresco and Templeton threw down challenges at the second last but Bament switched Peterbrown to the inside and held on to win by a neck in a thrilling finish. Trained by Karyn Heard who was delighted with his run, she stated that “Peterbrown found the ground at Upcott Cross too soft for him, he is young and progressive.” Owner Sally White was delighted ” It is magic when you have a winner, his second this season.”

Parkam Jack gave trainer Kayley Woollacott her 21st winner of the season, when taking the Mixed Open. The winner travelled well, coming home ten lengths ahead of Welstonedruid. Jockey Jamie Thomas, having just ridden his 17th winner of the season quoted “I turned down the back straight and just gave him a squeeze and he took off. It is my best season ever.”

David Noonan on It's All Or Nothing and Leanda Tickle on Swansbrook race into the finishing straight.

Four lined up for the Confined race, in which odds on favourite It’s All Or Nothing demonstrated a good style of jumping to fend off his main challenger Swansbrook to the delight of his owner Rob White. Trained by Charlotte Rowe who stated, “He just gets better and better, and is so easy to do at home.” The champagne corks are bound to be popping at The Blacksmiths Arms, owned by Rob White, who stated “I am looking forward to It’s All Or Nothing’s Restricted entry at Stratford which he qualified for previously, we will see how he comes out of this race first.”

The Woollacott team saddled two of the three runners contesting the Intermediate race, with King Kash heading out the odds on favourite under Jamie Thomas. However it was young Heidi Lewis who set the pace in front on Pasternak Jack, coming home five lengths ahead of the late challenging Hallo Dolly, with King Kash three lengths back in third. Trainer Kayley Woollacott gave all credit to Heidi, “She works full time for us, and puts in over and above working 24/7 on her days off too, showing real dedication.”

David Noonan rode a patient ride in the nine runner Open Maiden race, steering home The Persuader to get up to win by five lengths from Thirtyfirst Dansar. Trainer Caroline Prouse was delighted with her first winner in her own colours. “David gave him a peach of a ride, and made up so much ground. We bought him from Doncaster two years ago, he is a big backward sort, but showed lots of promise last year at Bratton.”
